The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk surf. It’s been flat and messy here at Kahana Bay for a while, and honestly, that’s not changing anytime soon. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak waves ahead before anything with a bit of push shows up.

Right now, on Monday afternoon, it’s ugly. There’s a storm risk, wind is blowing 22 mph cross-shore, and it’s making a mess of that 8ft of short-period, 7-second wind swell. The energy is moderate (800), but it’s lumpy and chopped up. Forget surfing, this looks more like a kiting day. Water temp is 80°, which is about normal for this time of year.

The surf stays poor through the rest of the week. Tuesday morning cleans up with a fresh offshore wind and 6ft of longer-period, 11-second swell from the ENE. The energy is still moderate (884), and it’s looking marginal, but it’s the best we’ll see for days. Tuesday afternoon eases to 6ft with a moderate offshore wind and clean conditions. It’s not great, but if you’re keen for a paddle, that’s your window. Wednesday through Friday is a write-off—the swell drops, the wind goes onshore, and it’s back to being small and lumpy.

The weekend is weak too. Saturday and Sunday have waves in the 2ft to 3ft range with light cross and cross-onshore winds. It’s messy and weak. Nothing to get excited about.

There is a pulse of north-northwest groundswell coming around the 17th and 18th. The period stretches out to 12-13 seconds, which is proper swell, but the size is still only 3ft to 4ft. The energy jumps to a moderate 485 on the 17th afternoon, but it’s still not enough to get the heart racing, and the wind is cross-shore, making it marginal at best.

So, the truth is, there’s nothing that stands out as a proper session in the entire 16-day window. We’re looking at a long gap of small, weak surf. The breaks are inconsistent, so this blank run is pretty much the norm for this area. It won’t stay this bad forever, but right now, you’re better off waiting. Keep an eye on that NNW groundswell near the end of the second week—it has potential, but it’s a long way out, and the wind has to play nice. For now, be patient.

Rusty.
