Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at the surf coming up for the next two weeks in feet and miles per hour.
There’s a long run of waves, but the first few days are a right mess. The real good stuff doesn’t show up until the second week, with the standout days being around the 14th and 15th.
Kicking off, Saturday the 4th has a 6ft ENE swell running with a cross-shore wind and a risk of thunderstorms. The energy is moderate (508 in the AM, 486 in the PM), but the conditions are rough. Not a day to rush for. Sunday morning the 5th drops to 5ft, but the wind goes glassy – that’s a big positive, and the water temp is about average for this time of year. It’ll be clean, but the swell is fading and the period is only 9 seconds, so it won’t have much punch. Sunday afternoon sees an offshore wind from the NE, but the waves drop further to 4ft. Monday the 6th is a total loss with a short 8-second period swell at only 4ft and a cross-onshore breeze.
From Tuesday the 7th through the end of the first week, the swell builds back up, sitting between 6ft and 8ft from the ENE. Energy climbs from moderate (596 on Wednesday) up to strong (865 on Saturday the 11th). The problem is the wind – it’s mostly cross-onshore or onshore, making it choppy and unappealing. The period moves up to 10 seconds, but that wind ruins it. This stretch honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddling.
Then we hit the jackpot. Tuesday the 14th of July brings a 8ft ENE swell (energy 1084 – strong), a 10-second period, and a clean cross-offshore wind from the WSW in the morning. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The break is Isla Uvita, a consistent point break that handles this ENE swell beautifully. The optimum swell direction is NE, and that’s what we’ve got. This is the standout – for experts only at this size, but the quality is there. Crowds are possible.
Wednesday the 15th is nearly as good. The swell eases slightly to 7ft, but the wind goes glassy from the ESE. Energy is still moderate to strong (794), and the period is 10 seconds. Dead calm, clean waves. Wednesday afternoon keeps that glassy feel with a 6ft swell – another great session.
From Thursday the 16th onward, the wind turns cross-shore and cross-onshore again, and the swell stays between 7ft and 7ft. The conditions get marginal, with thunderstorms back in the mix. Not worth it compared to that 14th and 15th window.
So, the plan: hold out for Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th. That’s your best bet. Glassy or clean offshore winds, solid ENE swell, and a good 10-second period. The rest is a wash.
Rusty.
