The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for Playa Bonita. There’s a bit of a slow start, but once it gets going, there’s some real magic to be had.

The first few days of the outlook are a bit of a wash. The 7th and 8th offer small, weak waves with a combined energy of only 207 to 203, and that’s with a bit of storm risk hanging around. The water is 84°, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least the bath is warm.

But hold on. Sunday morning the 9th is where it all kicks off. The wind drops to dead calm, glassy conditions, and the swell jumps to 7ft from the ENE with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 763, and it’s looking like very good surf. That’s your standout session for the first week. The sets will have some punch, but that 10-second period keeps it from being a wall of white water – it’s a proper, rideable groundswell prime for this reef.

The next few days are a mixed bag of cross-shore and onshore winds, but the swell stays consistent in the 5ft to 6ft range. The real highlight of the whole forecast is Saturday the 15th. The morning has a bigger 8ft swell (combined energy 1146), but the afternoon is the gem. The wind turns glassy from the SSE, the swell is still solid at 8ft from the ENE, and the combined energy hits 1001. That’s excellent surf, but it’s for experienced surfers only – that size on a reef can be a handful for the average punter.

Further out, the 21st of August looks promising with a glassy Friday morning, 7ft of ENE swell, and a combined energy of 831. That’s a great call for a more consistent, clean session, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.

Overall, Playa Bonita is a fairly consistent reef. The crowds can be around sometimes, but with the quality on offer, especially on the 9th and the 15th, it’s worth dealing with a few people. There’s a gap of a couple of days at the start with nothing to write home about, but it definitely doesn’t stay poor for long.

Stay stoked.
Rusty
