The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s ahead for Dominical over the next couple of weeks.
The water’s sitting at 87°, which is a touch warmer than what’s normal for this time of year, so that’s nice.
Right off the bat, Monday afternoon is a write-off – risk of thunderstorms and only 2ft of swell with marginal conditions. Nothing to get excited about.
Tuesday morning, July 14, is where it starts to get interesting. We’ve got 3ft of SW groundswell, and the wind is dead calm – glassy conditions. That's a solid start. The combined energy is at 313 (moderate), and the period is 14 seconds, so you’re getting proper long-period groundswell. That’s the kind of energy that holds up well here. This is the standout session for the early part of the week.
Wednesday and Thursday mornings are going to be a bit messier with light cross-onshore winds and smaller swell, still around 3ft to 3ft, but that chop will take the shine off. The afternoons are all risk of storms.
Friday morning, July 17, is another one to pencil in. The wind goes glassy again, and we’ve got 2ft of SW swell with a 12-second period. Combined energy is 291 (moderate). It’s not huge, but it’ll be clean and rideable.
Saturday morning, July 18, looks good too – glassy wind, 3ft of SSW swell, 13-second period, and energy at 317 (moderate). A consistent, user-friendly morning.
Sunday and Monday mornings, July 19 and 20, both have glassy starts with 3ft and 3ft respectively. The Monday morning session on the 20th has a combined energy of 354 (moderate), which is one of the better energy readings, and the period is 13 seconds. That’s a really clean, solid option.
Towards the end of the first week and into the second week, the swell stays small but the conditions remain glassy most mornings. July 24th Friday afternoon stands out – only 1ft of swell, but with a 24-second period! That’s a very long-period groundswell, combined energy 219 (moderate), and the wind is glassy. For a point break like Dominical, that long period can produce some beautifully lined-up waves, but don’t expect much size.
July 25th Saturday morning brings a shift: the wind turns offshore from the NE at 6 mph, with 2ft of SW swell and a 21-second period, combined energy 348 (moderate). That offshore wind and long period makes this a genuinely promising session, even if the height is small.
The following Sunday and Monday, July 26 and 27, both have glassy mornings with 2ft swell and periods around 17-19 seconds, and energy levels between 266 and 393 (moderate to strong). These are clean, long-period sessions that should offer some fun, well-shaped waves.
There’s a dry patch in the middle of the second week – from around Wednesday July 23 morning through Friday July 24 morning, conditions are glassy but the swell is very small (2ft to 3ft) and the period drops to 7-8 seconds, so the energy is weak (120-150). That’s more of a flat spell, not worth rushing out for.
Overall, the standout is Tuesday morning July 14 with 3ft SW groundswell and glassy wind, and Monday morning July 26 with 2ft SW swell, 19-second period, and strong energy at 393 – but that one’s a week and a half out, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
