Hawaiians Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag, and honestly, it starts off with a bit of a tease before turning pretty wild.

The first real window of surf we’ve got is this Wednesday morning, August 5th. Hawaiians (Hawaiians) is showing some chest to head-high stuff, around 6ft, from the east with a solid 17-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is moderate at 1682. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NE at 9 mph, which should keep it fairly clean. It’s a reef, so it’s got some shape to it, but it’s an advanced wave. The water is sitting at 87°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a little something extra. It’s not a perfect score, there’s a bit of a question mark over the tide, but it’s the best of the early week.

The afternoon sees the wind pick up to 16 mph, and the swell bumps slightly to 6ft, but that added wind makes it a bit more of a handful. The energy is climbing into the moderate range at 2149, but the call is still marginal.

Now, Thursday, August 6th, is where it starts to get serious. The swell jumps to 10ft in the morning, and the energy is getting strong at 5333, but the wind is up to 25 mph from the north. That’s a cross-offshore wind, but it’s strong. The afternoon pushes it to 12ft and 7089 energy, but the wind is now 28 mph. It’s big, but it’s getting blown apart. This is a lot of water for Hawaiians, and it’s getting too messy to be much fun.

Then, the wheels come off on Friday, August 7th. The swell is huge, 30ft in the morning with a storm-force cross-wind at 59 mph. The energy reading is a massive 33846, which is just insane. The afternoon is even worse, with 31ft swell and 81 mph hurricane-force winds. This is not a surfing day. This is a “stay home and watch the news” day. The forecast notes say it’s too big for the break, and they’re not wrong. It’s a dangerous, violent mess.

Saturday and Sunday, August 8th and 9th, see the swell drop out completely, but the chaos continues. The wind is still storm-force at times, and the conditions are just blown out. There’s nothing to ride.

The start of the next week, Monday August 10th, is still a write-off. The wind is severe gale to near gale force from the southwest, and the surf is either too small or completely unruly. The energy is all over the place, but there’s no quality to be found.

Things slowly try to settle down towards Tuesday and Wednesday, August 11th and 12th. The swell drops back down, but the wind is still onshore and the energy is weak. It’s a paddling session at best, not worth getting excited about.

After that, the long-range forecast for the second week is pretty grim. From Thursday, August 13th, all the way through to Tuesday, August 19th, it’s a desert. The swell is tiny, the energy is weak, all readings are in the low double digits or single digits, and the winds are mostly onshore or cross-shore. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. There’s a lot of nothing on offer.

The only glimmer of hope is on Thursday morning, August 20th. There’s a small 3ft pulse from the east, but the period is only 7 seconds, which is short and weak. The energy is still low at 88. The wind is light offshore from the ENE, so it’ll be clean, but it’s just not going to be any real size. It’s a knee-high dribble at best.

So, to be honest, this is a rough stretch. The only real window is Wednesday morning, and even that is just a taste. Then it’s either flat or terrifying. The one thing that can be said is that this kinda run doesn’t usually last forever. The ocean always sorts itself out, so keep an eye on it. But for now, don’t go selling your board.
