The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a 16-day look at Fishermans Reef, and I’ll be honest with you – it’s a tough stretch. This spot is a very sheltered, rarely-breaking reef setup, and the forecast backs that up. There’s basically nothing on offer for surfers in this entire window.
The first recommendation doesn’t come until Wednesday, July 15th, and it’s a dud. We’re looking at a tiny 0.7ft swell from the east, with a 12-second period. The water is sitting at 58°F, which is about normal for this time of year, no big anomaly. The combined swell energy is a weak 19, barely a whisper. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’s clean, but there’s just no wave to ride. This poor surf theme just keeps rolling.
Thursday the 16th is the same story – 0.7ft, clean, but nothing doing. Friday the 17th sees a slight bump to 2ft from the east, with a 17-second period. That’s a very long period swell, which would normally be a good sign, but at this size and with the combined energy only hitting 153, it’s still not enough to get this break working. The wind does go offshore on Friday afternoon, which is a positive, but the swell is too weak.
The weekend through the following week is just a grind. The swell stays below 2ft until Monday the 20th, when we get a 3ft pulse from the ENE, but the period crashes to 5 seconds. That’s short-period, weak windswell, and the combined energy is only 58. It’s poor surf. The wind is cross-shore, so it’s messy too. Tuesday the 21st has a moment of glassy conditions with 2ft, but the period is still 5 seconds and the energy is a pathetic 33. There’s just nothing to get excited about.
From Wednesday the 22nd all the way through to the end of the period on Thursday the 30th of July, we are stuck with tiny, weak swells. The heights rarely crack 1ft, and the combined energy values are mostly in the single digits or low teens. There are some nice offshore wind windows, especially on the 23rd and 25th, but it’s like having a perfect, clean dance floor with no music. The biggest swell of the whole period pops up on Sunday the 26th at 3ft from the NNW, but with a period of only 4 seconds, it’s just a bump of windswell, and the energy is only 25. Not surfable.
So, look, there is no standout. There is nothing to recommend. The best on offer is probably the glassy Tuesday the 21st, but even then, you’d be staring at a flat ocean. For a beginner reef that rarely breaks, this is a totally normal blank run. If you’re a kiter, that Tuesday afternoon glass might be worth a look, but for us paddle surfers, it’s a hard pass. The forecasts can change, but right now, this is a long 16 days of nothing. Stay patient, mate.
Rusty.
