The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in feet and old-school numbers.
The 16-day window starts with a real flat spell. From Tuesday, August 18th, we’re looking at a 0.5m easterly swell, which is about 2 feet. The wind is a cross-off at 25 km/h, so the surface is clean, but the energy is weak (42) and the period is short at 9 seconds. It’s poor surf. From Wednesday the 19th through to Tuesday the 26th of August, the swell barely gets to 0.4m (1 feet), and most days we’re looking at 0.1m to 0.2m (0.3 to 0.7 feet). The energy is in the single digits. There are a couple of glassy days on the 24th and 26th, but with no swell, it’s flat. That’s a solid 8-day gap with nothing worth paddling for.
The only pulse of size comes on Thursday, August 27th, with a 1.5m (5 feet) north swell, energy jumping to 136 and then 232 in the afternoon. But the period is a weak 6 to 7 seconds, and the wind is a messy cross-onshore at 15 to 20 km/h. The water temp is about 57°F here, which is normal for the season. The surf is choppy and poor. For a beginner reef that rarely breaks, this is a no-go. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle wave.
The messy cross-onshore wind sticks around through Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th, with 1.0m to 1.3m (3 to 4 feet) of north-northeast swell, but the period stays short (6 to 8 seconds) and the quality is poor. Saturday morning has heavy rain and choppy conditions.
From Sunday, August 30th, to Wednesday, September 2nd, we drop back to tiny 0.3m to 0.4m (1 to 1 feet) from the northeast. The wind finally turns offshore or calm on the 31st and 1st, giving clean conditions, but the wave energy is weak (26 to 45). The swell direction is right for the break, but the size is too small.
There’s no true stand-out in this 16-day window. The best chance is on the 1st and 2nd of September, with clean offshore winds and 0.4m (1 feet) of northeast swell – but that’s a knee-high dribble, not a wave. The flat spell is long, and the one pulse of size on the 27th is ruined by wind.
Rusty, signing off.
