Table - best surf conditions forecast for Fishermans Reef over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one for Fishermans Reef. The whole 16-day window looks like a write-off for decent paddle surfing. The reef is a very sheltered setup, and the swell that does get in is tiny, weak, and from the wrong directions. The combined swell energy is low, mostly under 100 (134 at best), and the water temp is sitting at 59°F, which is about average for the time of year with a minor anomaly of -0.7°F.
We kick off Thursday, July 9th, with a muddy 3ft of weak, short-period swell from the east, but a stiff 15 mph southerly breeze is making a mess of it. It’s just poor. Friday the 10th drops to a tiny 0.3ft, and even though the morning has clean offshore wind, there’s absolutely no swell to ride. That flat spell carries right through until the first half of the second week.
Tuesday, July 14th, offers a glimmer with a 4ft pulse from the north, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s just a bump. The morning has a light cross-offshore, but the conditions are still poor. It’s barely enough to get your hopes up. The rest of that week is flat and clean, but empty.
The big story is in the third week, but it’s not good news for surfer. On Saturday, July 18th, the afternoon goes glassy with a 7ft swell from the east-northeast, but the period is still a short 6 seconds. The energy is ramping up (292). It’s a steep climb into Sunday, July 19th, when the swell jumps to 10ft and then 12ft, with the combined energy hitting 815 and 1251. The wind is cross-onshore, and the period is still short. This is a classic case of a ton of water moving but no shape. The break is too sheltered and the direction is wrong for this reef. Honestly, with that much swell, poor quality, and strong cross-onshore wind, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swell hits 13ft on Monday, July 20th, with a 10-second period and 3775 energy, but it’s howling cross-onshore at 19 mph. It’s lumpy, messy, and dangerous. By the time things settle down on July 22nd with glassy conditions and a 3ft swell, the energy is back down and the window is closing.
There are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The reef rarely breaks anyway, and this forecast shows exactly why. It’s a blank run for the area. Hang in there, check back again.
