Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've scanned the charts and gotta be straight with you—this stretch is a dud for the next 16 days. There’s not a single recommendation in the window worth paddling out for. The whole forecast is marked as "poor surf conditions" right through. It’s a blank run, and for a spot like Fishermans Reef that’s already "rarely breaks," this kind of quiet spell isn't unusual. The setup is just too sheltered and inconsistent to fire without a perfect alignment of swell and wind, and we ain’t getting it.
Let’s walk through it. The earliest we see any energy is Sunday the 5th of July, with a small 3ft swell from the ENE at 10 seconds. The combined energy is 229 (moderate), but the wind is a cross-off from the NW at 6 mph, keeping things clean. Still, it’s a poor surf quality call, so don’t expect much. Monday the 6th is a write-off with messy cross-shore winds and dropping energy. Tuesday the 7th sees a spike to 8ft from the NNE, but the period is a short 8 seconds and the wind is howling onshore at 25 mph—that’s messy, lumpy, and only for the die-hards.
Wednesday the 8th shapes up as the closest thing to a highlight, but it’s still not good. You get a 4ft swell from the East, period 10 seconds, and the wind turns offshore from the SW at 16 mph. Clean conditions, moderate energy (292), but the surf quality is still rated poor. If you’re desperate for a slide, that afternoon might offer a few rippable little lines, but it’s a long way from a standout.
After that, the energy flatlines. Thursday the 9th morning goes glassy with a 3ft East swell and only a slight air off the SSW, but again, poor conditions. The combined energy drops to 131 (weak) and keeps falling through the rest of the week. By Sunday the 12th, we’re looking at 1ft dribble with energy in the 20s. The water temp is 59°, which is about average for this time of year.
The second week kicks off with a tease—Wednesday the 15th morning looks glassy again, with a 2ft East swell that has a long period of 12 seconds. The energy is still weak (77), and the cloud cover is clear, but it’s a poor call. It’s not breaking. Then Thursday the 16th you see a jump in size to 7ft from the North, but it’s a short 9-second period, the wind is onshore at 19 mph, and the energy is 727 (moderate-strong). It’ll be a washing machine, way too big for beginners and only messy for experts.
The rest of the week stays poor. Friday the 17th drops to 4ft with onshore gales at 28 mph, and Saturday the 18th brings heavy rain and a 6ft northerly pulse. The weekend and Monday the 20th finish with tiny 1ft leftover bumps and offshore wind, but the energy is practically dead at 34.
Honestly, for this stretch, your best bet is to save the wax. The swell direction (mostly East and North) doesn’t match Fishermans Reef’s optimum which is NE, and the wind just never stays right for long. If you’re a kite surfer, the strong onshore days like the 7th, 16th, and 18th might look interesting, but for paddle surfing? Forget it. The forecasts can always change, but right now, it’s a total blank.
Rusty.
