The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s not beat around the bush – it’s a tough run ahead for this stretch. The only break on the cards is Fishermans Reef, and it’s a rare one that only breaks occasionally, so don’t pin your hopes on a solid session. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Through the entire 16-day window, the swell is basically non-existent. We’re talking a tiny 0.3ft to 0.7ft at best from the NE, with a weak combined energy that barely cracks double digits (8 to 13). The period is long, around 10 to 11 seconds, which would normally be a treat for a point reef like this, but there’s just no height to work with. The strongest pulse comes through on Friday the 28th, with a 3ft swell from the N, but it’s a 4-second wind chop and the wind is howling onshore at 19 mph – that’s just messy, lumpy junk. The energy jumps to 57, but it’s poor surf conditions across the board.
The best you can hope for is a glimmer of hope on Thursday the 27th morning – glassy conditions with a 0.3ft NE swell, but it’s still tiny. Or maybe Saturday the 29th morning with a light offshore breeze and a 1.0ft swell, but again, you’re barely getting wet. The wind is often offshore or cross-offshore, which is a positive for the reef, but without any real swell, it’s a flat spell. Looks like this area is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing through the first week, with those onshore northerlies later.
In the second week, from the 1st of September onward, it’s more of the same – 1ft max, mostly clean but still flat. The 3rd of September morning has a gentle offshore breeze, but with a 1ft at 9 seconds, it’s barely a ripple. Overall, there’s no standout session here. A blank run like this is pretty normal for a spot that rarely breaks. It’s a long wait, but forecasts can change.
