The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Alright, I've had a look at the charts for Fishermans Reef, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a pretty grim run for the next couple of weeks. This spot is a very sheltered little reef that rarely breaks, so it takes a very specific set of circumstances to get it going. We just don't have 'em right now.
The entire 16-day stretch is a write-off for any kind of decent surf. From the 17th of July right through to the 1st of August, every single session is rated as poor surf conditions. You're looking at tiny, weak swell with low energy readings. The early days around the 17th and 18th have a bit of waist-high activity from the east, but it's a wobbly, inconsistent affair. The combined energy is only 153 or 138, which is weak, and the swell period is around 16-17 seconds. That's a long-period groundswell, usually a good sign, but at a sheltered spot like this, it's just not getting enough juice to wrap in properly.
There's a total gap of nothing worthwhile. The couple of days around the 20th and 21st are completely flat. Then you get a sniff of something on the 25th with a 3ft north swell, but it's a messy 7-second period with strong onshore winds. This is more of a kite-surfing kind of setup than a paddle-surfing one. The wind is 19 mph, but it's cross-offshore, so it'll be clean, but the wave quality for a wave count of 0/10 is just not there.
The best of a terrible bunch might be the 31st of July. The morning shows a 4ft swell from the NNW with a 5-second period. The energy reads 123 (moderate), and it's forecast to have a moderate offshore wind from the WSW. But even then, the score is a zero. It's a tiny, short-period windswell that's just not going to make a proper wave at a reef that only fires with the right direction.
Look, I know it's a drag, but Fishermans Reef is a fickle spot. A blank run like this is more normal for the area than a surprise. Forecasts can change, but for now, save your energy and wait for better days.
Rusty.
