Alright, grab a coffee, let's have a look at what we've got on the go here. Honestly, for the next week and a half, it’s pretty quiet at Fishermans Reef.
Right now, and through the rest of July 12th, it's tiny. We’re looking at a weak 2ft easterly swell with a short period, and the wind is light cross-shore. The water’s sitting at 58°, which is about normal for the time of year. The combined wave energy is a measly 61, and the report calls it poor. It’s not even worth paddling out for.
That flat spell hangs around. Through the 13th, 14th, and 15th, we’ve got nothing but tiny, weak waves and onshore or cross-shore breezes. The swell heights barely crack 0.7ft to 1ft. It’s just not happening.
We get a little tease on the 16th. Thursday morning and afternoon go glassy, with a tiny 0.7ft easterly swell, period of 11 to 14 seconds. It’s clean as a whistle, but there’s no push. The energy reading is just 14 to 26, so not a wave to bother with.
The end of the week, on the 17th and 18th, we finally see some proper offshore wind from the SSW and SW at 12 mph. The swell stays small though, only 1ft to 2ft, but the period bumps up to 15-16 seconds. That cleaner energy (up to 133 combined energy) means it might be rideable on a log, but it’s still a marginal call.
Then we hit a wall again on the 19th, 20th, and 21st. The wind goes howling onshore, hitting 31 mph on the 20th and 21st. The swell jumps to 10ft on the 21st, but with that wind and an 8-second period, it’s gonna be a total washing machine. That’s kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing.
Now, here’s the highlight, and it’s a long way out. On Wednesday, July 22nd, we get a proper event. The morning sees a clean 16ft east-northeasterly swell with an 11-second period, and the wind is a moderate cross-offshore from the south at 16 mph. The combined energy is a massive 6763. The afternoon is even better, with the wind swinging to a moderate offshore from the SW, cleaning up that 16ft, 12-second swell. That’s a very large groundswell, and it’s going to be solid. The energy reading is a whopping 7475. The report says it’s excellent for experienced surfers.
So, the only real standout in this 16-day window is July 22nd. That’s your day if you’re an expert. Expect massive, powerful waves from the ENE. That long period (12 seconds) means it’s going to be a proper groundswell with plenty of push, and it will break a bit straight on the bank, but with clean offshore wind, it’ll be top shelf for the brave. The 23rd still has some size at 10ft with clean offshore wind, so that could be a good follow-up day.
After that, the swell slowly drops off through the 24th and 25th, staying clean and offshore but getting smaller each day.
So to sum it up: the next week is a total washout. Don’t bother. Get ready for the 22nd if you’ve got the skills. It’s the one day that looks truly epic.
