Alright, Rusty here, and I've had a good look at what's shaping up for us. Let's be straight with each other: the next couple of weeks are a tough watch for this corner of the world.
For a spot that's as sheltered as Fishermans Reef is, and with its optimum swell coming from the northeast, we're really at the mercy of the weather gods. The first week and a half is mostly a write-off. There's a long quiet stretch from Friday the 10th right through to the end of the following week, with hardly anything worth paddling out for. Swell energy is pitifully low—we're talking values like four and 13—and most of what's arriving is from the wrong direction with short-period dribble. We’ll see a little pulse of 3 ft from the east on Saturday the 11th, and the wind goes glassy late that afternoon, but it’s barely a ripple and not worth getting excited about. It’s the kind of flat spell where you’re better off cleaning the wax off your board or checking the tide pools.
That said, things finally start to wake up in the second week, and we get one proper stand-out window. The real highlight, and I mean the *only* one worth circling on your calendar, is Saturday the 19th. We’ve got a proper pulse of northerly groundswell rolling in, hitting 12 ft on the Sunday morning with a period of 11 seconds and a solid combined energy reading of 2950. That’s a big, powerful swell for a reef break like this. The wind is a clean cross-off from the south, so it should be groomed and lined up. Now, here’s the thing: at that size, it’s not a beginner wave. This is expert territory only. If you’re not comfortable on a bigger, heavier reef slab, give this one a wide berth. The sets will be clean but substantial, and it’s a day for the experienced local crew only.
Sunday the 20th will still have solid 8 ft waves with that same northerly energy, and the wind stays offshore. That’s also good, but the peak of the swell is definitely on the Saturday. After that, it slowly drops through the following week, from 6 ft on Monday the 21st down to 3 ft by Wednesday the 23rd. The winds stay clean through those days, but the size and power bleed out quickly.
So, to put it bluntly: we’ve got a long, flat drought, then one proper, expert-level session on Saturday the 19th. If you’re a beginner or intermediate, this isn’t your run-up. If you’re an expert and you’ve got Fishermans Reef dialled in, that Saturday morning is your slot. The rest of the time, leave the board in the car.
Take it easy.
Rusty.
