The Lowdown
Alright, this is a tough one to call straight up. I’m looking at the next 16 days for Fishermans Reef, and honestly, there’s nothing here that gets the heart pumping. Not a single standout session in the whole run.
The whole stretch from Saturday the 22nd of August right through to Sunday the 6th of September is basically flat to tiny. We’re looking at a combined swell energy that barely gets out of the single digits for most of it, peaking at a feeble 127 [units] for a brief moment on Sunday the 30th of August, but that’s still only about 4ft of lumpy, short-period junk. The swell is tiny, the directions are all over the place, and for a spot that’s very sheltered and rarely breaks, you need things to line up perfectly. They just don’t.
Right now, for a beginner-friendly reef, you need something from the NE to match its optimum direction, but most of what we’re seeing is N or NE with periods that are either too short or too long for a spot like this to shape up. The wind is messy too—lots of cross and cross-off winds, not the clean offshore that makes a tiny wave worth the paddle.
The one brief glimmer is on Friday the 28th of August morning. For a few hours, it’s glassy, with the swell height hitting about 3ft from the NE. That’s the biggest we get. But the period is only 5 seconds, so it’s basically a bumpy little closeout, and then the wind swings onshore by afternoon. Not worth getting wet for unless you’re desperate to be out.
After that, it’s back to nothing. A few days of clean, tiny 0.3ft to 2ft waves, but that’s just a lake. There’s a period of offshore wind from the WSW around the 31st of August to the 1st of September, but the swell is gone. You could paddle around, but you won’t catch a thing.
This is a blank run, plain and simple. For a break that already rarely breaks, a stretch like this is more normal than you’d hope. The forecasts can always change, but right now, I’d save the petrol.
Rusty.
