The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this is a dry spell. We’re looking at a 16-day window with nothing but flat, tiny leftovers. There’s no standout session, no pulse of proper swell to get excited about. The whole forecast is a run of poor surf conditions across the board, so don’t be expecting to get wet anytime soon if you’re after a proper wave.
The only spot in the game is Fishermans Reef, but it’s a tough one. This place is a very sheltered reef break that rarely breaks, and you can see why. The water temp is sitting around 57°, which is about 2° cooler than normal for this time of year – nothing too wild, just a bit nippy.
Starting off Friday the 17th, we’ve got a tiny 2-ft swell from the east, but it’s a long-period groundswell at 16 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 138, and even with a clean offshore wind, the wave comment says it all: poor surf. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are just as sad, with 1-ft and 1.0-ft swells – clean but useless. The energy drops right off into the single digits by Monday the 20th, with glassy conditions but only 0.7 ft of wave. You’d be better off floating with a beer.
There’s a little bump on Tuesday the 21st with a 4-ft east swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s going to be weak and messy. Energy is still low at 98. That’s followed by a few days of flatness – 1.0 ft, 0.3 ft – all the way through to the end of July. By Thursday the 30th, we see a pulse of 3 ft with a 7-second period, but the winds are cross-onshore and lumpy, making it a total write-off. The combined energy finally hits 101, but it’s choppy and ugly.
The last few days into the start of August don’t offer any hope either. A 1.0-ft east swell on the 1st with a 15-second period sounds promising on paper, but the energy is only 77 and the wind is strong. It’s just not enough.
Bottom line: there’s nothing to chase here. Fishermans Reef is a rare-breaker, and this forecast proves it. When it’s this flat for this long, it’s a normal thing for a spot this sheltered. Don’t hold your breath – forecasts can change, but right now, the surf is a no-go.
Rusty.
