The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here.
Look, I’m gonna level with you. The next couple of weeks are looking grim. We’ve got a rare-break setup at Fishermans Reef that just isn’t doing anything. You’re looking at a solid stretch of tiny, weak, and pretty much unsurfable waves. We’re talking about a run of days with nothing on the cards, just flat and messy conditions.
The first real bit of swell we see is around the 23rd of August, with a bump of 3ft from the northwest, but it’s short-period, weak energy (48), and the wind is a fresh cross-offshore. It’s not going to be pretty, and it’s not going to be worth the paddle. From there, it’s back to almost nothing again – those 0.3ft days just aren't surf. There’s a slight pickup around the 27th and 28th, with some 3ft – 3ft swell from the north, but again, it’s short-period stuff (5-6 seconds), and the winds are a mix of cross-off and cross-on, so it’s not going to be clean.
The most interesting window, and I use that term loosely, is the morning of the 1st of September. There’s a 3ft northeast swell with a 6-second period, and the wind is glassy. That’s the standout of the whole period, and it’s still small and weak (80). The 2nd of September has a bit more size at 4ft, but it’s accompanied by a strong cross-onshore wind, so it’s going to be a messy, choppy mess. Not worth it for a paddle, honestly.
With the swell being this small and the wind being mostly offshore or cross-off, the surface will be clean, but there just isn't any power. For a reef break that’s as sheltered as this, it’s a classic case of a blank run. It happens. The water temp is 57°, which is right around average for this time of year. When it’s this flat and this weak, you’re honestly better off staying home or finding something else to do. There will be a few days where the wind is howling, and the lack of swell just makes it a washing machine. Not a good sign for us.
Stay patient, keep an eye on that first week of September, because that’s the only glimmer we’ve got, and even that’s a distant maybe.
Rusty.
