The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight – this stretch of the coast has been dead quiet for a while. Fishermans Reef is one of those spots that almost never shows its face, and for the next two weeks that’s exactly what we’re looking at. The first surf that’s even worth a mention doesn’t turn up until Monday the 27th of July. That’s a solid 13‑day gap where the ocean serves up nothing but flat, choppy, or blown‑out junk. If you’re hanging for waves, that’s a long wait.
When it finally does wake up, Fishermans Reef (a sheltered reef that only breaks occasionally) will offer a brief window on Monday the 27th. The morning sees a 7ft swell from the east, with a period of 12 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell with good energy (combined energy 1155). Wind is light cross‑off from the west at 9 mph, which should keep the surface clean. The afternoon drops a touch to 6ft easterly, 11‑second period (energy 849), with a moderate offshore from the west‑south‑west at 16 mph. That’s clean, lined‑up reef waves. Water temp is 58°, about average for this time of year.
Now, the bad news: the swell direction is east, while this break loves north‑east – it’s not ideal, but it’s still a rare event for a spot that rarely breaks. The size (over 5ft) means it’s pushing into intermediate territory, and beginners might find it a handful. Crowds are only sometimes a problem, but when a reef like this lights up, expect a few locals to show. The long period also means the waves will be powerful and a bit shifty on this reef – not a beach break, so the shape should hold up.
After Monday the 27th, the swell fades quickly and the rest of the forecast window goes quiet again. If you’re keen for a chance at a rarely‑seen wave, that Monday is your only shot. Mark it, but don’t hold your breath – these events are few and far between.
Rusty.
