G’day, this is Rusty. Right, let’s have a proper look at what’s coming up for Muriwai Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Straight off the bat, the first couple of days are a write-off for paddle surfing. Monday the 6th starts with a big 8ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is a messy cross-off from the NNE at 16 mph, and the water temp is sitting at 59°F which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year. The afternoon sees it jump to a massive 13ft from the west – that’s way too big for anyone except the absolute nuts, and even then the wind goes cross-shore. Tuesday the 7th offers up a clean 12ft from the WSW with a long 16-second period and offshore winds from the east at 12 mph in the morning, but again, it’s just too big. This is a very exposed beach, and anything over 8ft here is only for experts. The combined energy is thumping, with a reading of 5727 (moderate to strong).
The first real standout comes on Saturday the 11th, early morning. The swell drops to a much more manageable 6ft from the SW, with a long 16-second period, light cross-off wind from the SE at 6 mph, and the combined energy is a solid 1958 (moderate). The conditions are clean, and this is the first time it’s honestly surfable for experienced surfers. The offshore wind direction is east, which lines up well with the optimum SW swell direction for this break. It’s a very consistent spot, so you can expect waves. Crowds are possible, as it’s a popular beach.
But the absolute best on offer is Sunday the 12th, afternoon. The swell sits at 6ft from the WSW, still a long 16-second period, but the wind goes glassy – dead calm at 3 mph from the east. That’s a major positive. The combined energy is 1686 (moderate). The conditions are glassy, the break is very consistent, and it’s a clean, lined-up swell. For experienced surfers, this is the pick of the whole forecast. The morning of the 12th is also excellent, with a 7ft SW swell and offshore east wind at 6 mph.
After that, the swell drops off. Monday the 13th has a clean 5ft from the WSW (947 energy) with light cross-off wind, but it’s not as punchy. Tuesday the 14th is a complete write-off with onshore winds and tiny swell. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th are messy, with onshore winds and short-period windswell, not worth paddling out for.
Looking into the second week, there’s a promising pulse on Saturday the 18th. The morning sees a 10ft swell from the WSW, 16-second period, and offshore wind from the east at 6 mph. Combined energy is 4910 (strong). But again, 10ft at this beach is only for experts. The wind is offshore, so it’ll be clean, but it’s a big one. Sunday the 19th is even bigger – 12ft to 13ft – with strong offshore winds from the east at 25-28 mph. That’s clean but hard to paddle into, and the energy is massive (4665-4980). Monday the 20th morning hits 13ft with a strong breeze. The afternoon of the 20th finally drops to 8ft from the WSW, with a light cross-off wind and clean conditions – that’s the best of the late forecast for experienced surfers.
Overall, a big, powerful stretch of surf. The standout is definitely Sunday the 12th afternoon for the glassy conditions, or the morning of the 12th and Saturday the 11th for clean, manageable groundswell. The late run on the 20th afternoon is also worth a look if you’re an expert. For the rest, it’s either too big, too small, or too windy. If you’re a beginner, stay out of the water until the 13th, and even then, it’s pushing it.
Rusty.
