Alright, Rusty again. Let’s break down O’Neills Bay in feet and miles per hour for the next couple of weeks. It’s a real mixed bag, but there are a few sessions you’ll want to mark on the calendar.
Right off the bat, Monday morning sees a solid 7ft WSW groundswell rolling in. Water temp’s 15°, dead average for the season. The problem is the 30 km/h NNE cross-off wind – it’s strong enough to chop things up, even if the wave face looks clean. The combined swell energy is a hefty 2361. Monday afternoon jumps to 12ft from the WNW, massive, but with thunderstorms and a 25 km/h north wind, it’s more of a beast than a beauty. Tuesday stays big at 8ft from the WSW, with a 16-second period – proper long-period groundswell – but heavy rain and 20 km/h ESE cross-off wind don’t help. This is for the experts only, and the crowds are often here, so expect company.
Wednesday and Thursday are poor – cross-on winds, lumpy, choppy. Not worth paddling out. Friday the 10th shows a bit of life: 7ft SSW in the morning with a gentle cross-shore wind, clean enough. The combined energy is 2407. But the real standout of the first week is Saturday the 11th morning. We’ve got 5ft SW groundswell with a 15-second period, light SE cross-off breeze, glassy conditions. Combined energy 1068. The forecast says “expect very good surf.” This is the pick – clean and workable for the advanced crew. The long-period swell will set up nicely at this fairly exposed spot, but those often-busy crowds mean you won’t have it to yourself.
Sunday the 12th morning is also solid: 5ft SW at 16 seconds, light east wind, cross-off, clean. Combined energy 1342. Excellent for experienced surfers. Then we hit a lull from Monday the 13th through Thursday the 16th – waves drop under 4ft, winds shift, mostly poor. Not much to report except small glassy walls on Monday.
Now for the second week. Friday the 17th sees a 7ft SW swell with gentle cross-on wind – marginal, but it’s building. Saturday the 18th is the true standout. Morning hits with a 10ft WSW groundswell, 15-second period, light ENE offshore breeze, and the conditions are “excellent for experienced surfers.” Combined energy is a massive 3440. That’s heavy, expert-only territory. Saturday afternoon stays at 8ft WSW with the same offshore wind – clean, powerful, mean. Sunday the 19th is still good at 7ft SW with a moderate offshore, but the wind picks up.
Into the 21st, there are smaller, cleaner options – 5ft WSW at 17 seconds on Tuesday morning with a gentle offshore, combined energy 1103. A nice, clean, long-period swell for the experienced crew.
So, bottom line: the best surfin’ is Saturday morning, July 18th – 10ft WSW, light offshore, glassy, experts only. Runner-up is Saturday morning, July 11th – smaller but clean and well-shaped.
Take it easy out there.
