The Lowdown
Alright, mate. Rusty here. Let’s run through what’s cooking at O’Neills Bay.
For the next week and a bit, we’ve got some decent size on the way, but the wind is gonna be the main character for a lot of it. The real standout window is a run of clean, glassy conditions from Monday the 20th through to Wednesday the 29th, but you’ve got to be smart about which session you pick.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off. Friday the 17th has a 6ft WSW swell rolling in, but it’s cross-on at 9 mph, so it’s gonna be choppy and messy. Water temp is 58°, which is normal for the season. Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th see the swell building to 7ft-8ft on Sunday, but the wind is onshore and gusty. Not much to get excited about.
Then we get our first real highlight. Monday the 20th is the pick of the first week. The swell drops back to 6ft from the SW (14-second period), but the wind swings to a light offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. That’s clean, lined-up surf with moderate energy (1321). The morning and afternoon both look excellent. This is the one to aim for if you want some proper clean waves.
Tuesday the 21st is still good, with the swell easing to 4ft-4ft from the SW. The morning is clean with a cross-off, but the afternoon gets glassy with a 3 mph southerly. It’ll be smaller, but perfect for a longboard or a fun craft. After that, Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd drop off in size and the wind gets messy again, so it’s a bit of a lull.
The next standout is a cracker, but it’s a long way off. Wednesday the 29th of July is looking like the best of the whole forecast. We’ve got a solid 6ft WSW swell, but the wind is glassy or light cross-off, and the energy is moderate (1423). The afternoon session is forecast for “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” – 6ft, clean, and glassy. This is a potential late-month gem. Thursday the 30th morning also looks clean with a 6ft WSW swell and light offshore winds. Keep an eye on these days.
The end of the period into early August sees a few more marginal days, but nothing that stands out like the 29th. There’s a big 12ft SW swell on the 25th but with a 25 mph westerly, it’s a write-off for surfing – more of a kite session.
So, bottom line: if you’re keen, get out on Monday the 20th for the cleanest early window, and mark your calendar for Wednesday the 29th of July – that could be the real late-winter treat.
Rusty.
