The Lowdown
Alright, grab yourself a coffee, let’s have a look at what’s on offer around here at Red Beach. It’s a bit quiet, I'm not gonna lie. We’ve got a long opening stretch that’s more for the tan than the waves.
Look, the next week or so is pretty much flat. The swell is tiny, barely a wobble, and the energy numbers are in the single digits or low teens for most of it – that’s weak energy (8) for you. The wind is often offshore or cross-offshore, which is beautiful, but there’s just no water moving to do anything with it. We’ve got some glassy moments on the 27th morning, but with a 0.3ft northeasterly swell at 9 seconds, it’s more of a gentle paddle than a surf session. This first real gap in the action starts now and runs right through until the 29th, so a good eight or nine days of flatness.
Now, on the 29th of August, things finally get a bit spicy. Saturday afternoon, we get a pulse of northerly swell jumping to 5ft, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined swell energy hits (207), which is moderate. The cross-offshore wind from the northwest will keep it reasonably clean. For the dedicated crew, this is a window to get wet. However, this is the best it gets.
Come the 1st of September, we see some 2ft swell from the NE with a better 11-second period, and steady offshore wind. The energy is still weak (72), but the wave shape might be better. Red Beach is a beginner’s spot by nature, and the forecast optimum swell is from the NE, which matches nicely. Be mindful that the water temp sits around 57°, and the anomaly is -1°, so it’s about average for this time of year – wear a decent wetsuit.
For the standout session, and the only real standout of the whole 16 days, I’d have to point you at the Saturday 29 August afternoon. The 5ft swell is the biggest we’ll see, and it’s the only day where you’ll get a real push of water under your board. It’s not huge, but it’s the best on offer by a long shot. For all other days, the surf is either non-existent, or just 1-2ft fun-sized stuff that’s surfable but nothing to write home about. Overall, if you’re desperate, you’ll find a wave on the 29th, but the waiting game continues after that.
