The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one to write. The next 16 days for Red Beach are looking pretty bleak, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it.

Right from the get-go, we’ve got a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. The entire first week, from Wednesday the 19th right through to the morning of Friday the 28th, is essentially a write-off. We’re talking about 9 days of tiny, weak surf with combined swell energy barely getting into double digits, often below 30. The water temp is sitting at 57°F, which is about 1°F cooler than normal for this time of year – nothing out of the ordinary, just a bit of a chill.

Things finally get a pulse on Friday the 28th, but it’s a messy one. A north swell pushes in at 7ft with a short, crumbly period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 434 – so there’s power there. But the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the north at 19 mph, making it lumpy and choppy. This is one of those days where the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swell is too big for beginners and the conditions are rough for everyone else.

The end of the month offers a glimmer. Saturday the 29th morning sees a drop to 3ft from the NNE, with a light cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is a moderate 126, and the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not going to be a classic, but it’s surfable.

Then, Sunday the 30th morning is the best we’ve got in the whole window. The wind goes dead calm, glassy, with a 2ft NE swell at 9 seconds. The energy is a low 81, so it’s small, but glassy conditions are a major positive. For a beginner-level break that’s inconsistent, this is your window. The swell direction is straight from the optimum NE, so it should line up. Just don’t expect much power.

After that, the outlook fades again. September starts with onshore winds and rain, and the swell drops back to nothing. The forecast is clear: there’s no standout session in this 16-day run. But for a spot that’s inconsistent, this kind of blank run is pretty normal. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.

Rusty.
