The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Red Beach.
Alright, the outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We've got a solid stretch of small, weak surf and ordinary conditions to start, but the second week looks like it could be a proper standout. The key is patience. Things are pretty flat and messy for the first week or so, with a real gap. From Tuesday 14th July right through to about Thursday 24th July, there's barely a wave worth paddling for. The swell is tiny, often under 2 ft, with short periods and weak combined energy – mostly in the teens and twenties (39 to 71). The wind is all over the shop, but mostly offshore or cross-off, which keeps the water clean, but there's just nothing to ride. It's a blank run, and for a spot like this, it's not unusual to see a rough patch like this.
Then, from Friday 25th July, things start to get interesting. The real standout is the Saturday 25th July afternoon. The wind goes glassy, and the swell pushes up to 6 ft from the NE with a long 12-second period. The combined energy is strong (868). That's got real potential. The water temp is about 58°, which is a touch cooler than usual for this time of year, but nothing wild.
For the best of the best, you need to be at Red Beach on Saturday 25th July. The morning glass-off is also a beauty, with 5 ft NE swell and a long 11-second period (combined energy 659). The winds are light and glassy, so it'll be absolutely clean. This is a classic groundswell setup, and with that long period, it'll have plenty of power and shape, though it might be a little too straight for a beach break, so keep an eye on the banks. The crowd factor is "sometimes" here, so you might have a few other keen locals out, but it'll be worth it.
Sunday 26th July morning is still solid with 6 ft NE swell (combined energy 900), but it's a cross-shore wind, so it won't be quite as clean as the Saturday. By Monday 27th July afternoon, the wind goes glassy again with a 5 ft ENE swell (combined energy 644), which is another good session. The swell is still a bit long in the tooth at 12 seconds, so the same caveat about it being a bit straight at the beach applies.
So, the call is clear. The first week is a write-off for surfing. Get your gear ready, because the second week, specifically the Saturday 25th, is the one to circle on the calendar. It's a long-range call, so it's a promising, but not a dead cert.
Rusty.
