The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this outlook for Red Beach is a rough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak swell with poor conditions for the next week and a half. The water temp is sitting at 57°, which is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
The first real chance to even talk about a wave doesn’t come until Monday, the 31st of August. For a full ten days before that, from Thursday the 20th right through to Sunday the 30th, the surf is pretty much flat. We’re talking heights of 0.3ft to 2ft, mostly from the east or northeast, with combined wave energy rarely getting above 35 (weak). The wind is often offshore or cross-offshore, which would be a dream if there was any swell, but there just isn’t. It’s a near-complete blank run.
Finally, on Monday the 31st, we see a tiny pulse. Morning sees a clean 3ft from the northeast, with a 10-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze from the northwest. The combined energy is a modest 127 (moderate). The afternoon drops slightly to 2ft with light cross-offshore winds. It’s surfable, but only just. The conditions are clean, but the size is so small it’s really only for the biggest of boards or the most desperate of surfers.
Things get a little more interesting on Wednesday, the 2nd of September. The morning brings a messy 5ft from the north-northeast, but with a terrible 5-second period and a cross-offshore wind. The energy jumps to 209 (moderate). The real standout, if you can call it that, is the afternoon. We get a moderate offshore wind from the west-northwest and the swell bumps up to 7ft from the north-northeast, with a 6-second period. The combined energy hits 320 (moderate). This is the biggest swell of the period, but it’s a short-period, wind-driven mess. It’s clean due to the offshore wind, but at 7ft, this is only for the experts out there. The short period means it’ll be a bit soft and mushy, not the powerful groundswell we’d hope for.
Thursday the 3rd sees a quick drop-off. Strong offshore winds from the southwest (25 mph) blow the top off a 4ft swell, but it’s a poor, choppy situation. The energy is still moderate at 221. After that, it’s back to tiny, ordinary waves for the rest of the forecast.
So, the only real standout here is the afternoon of Wednesday, the 2nd of September. A 7ft, clean, offshore swell with moderate energy. It’s the biggest and best of a very average bunch, but the short period keeps it from being a classic. The rest of the month is a write-off. For a beginner, this whole period is a skip. The setup is more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers on those days with solid wind.
Rusty.
