The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here giving you the lowdown on Red Beach. Let’s be real: it’s a long, quiet stretch before we see anything that’s worth paddling out for.

The first surf we can talk about doesn’t show up until the morning of Thursday, July 31st, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. We’ve got a small bump of swell, 3.9ft from the NNW, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (138), but it’s not going to get your heart racing. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the WSW, so the surface will be clean, but the waves themselves are just rideable, nothing special. The morning of August 1st is a similar story, with 2.3ft from the north and a light cross-off breeze, but again, just ordinary.

Now, the real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, arrives on Monday, August 3rd. The morning session is the pick of the entire 16-day window. We’re looking at a solid 8.2ft of swell from the east, with a period of 8 seconds. That’s a lot of water moving around, and the combined energy is a strong 809. This is big, powerful stuff. The wind is offshore from the west, blowing at 9 mph, which should keep the faces clean and lined up. This is a setup that demands respect – it’s big enough that it’s really only for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds similar size at 8.2ft, but the wind swings to a cross-offshore, which might make it a bit bumpy, and there’s a risk of thunderstorms, so keep an eye on the sky.

The water temperature is sitting at 57.6°F, which is running about 1.4°F cooler than normal for this time of year. It’s a bit chilly, but not a huge shock.

The long gap before that August 3rd swell is the main story here. We’ve got almost two weeks of tiny, weak, or flat conditions. Don’t bother checking the tide charts until we get closer to that Monday. It’s a quiet period, but when that east swell finally shows up, it’ll make up for the wait.

Short Range Forecast

Heavy rain (total 31mm), heaviest during Mon night. Very mild (max 14°C on Sun afternoon, min 10°C on Mon night). Mainly fresh winds.

Moderate rain (total 12mm), heaviest on Fri afternoon. Very mild (max 15°C on Thu afternoon, min 10°C on Thu night). Winds increasing (calm on Thu morning, strong winds from the WSW by Fri night).
