The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break down Red Beach – and I’ll tell ya, it’s a pretty sorry picture for the next couple of weeks.
We start on Saturday the 18th of July with a tiny 1ft easterly dribble, 14-second period, cross-offshore wind, and barely any energy (69). The water’s 58°, which is a bit cooler than normal for this time of year, but nothin’ wild. It’s just flat and frustrating.
That quiet spell hangs around for a solid week. We get a glassy morning on Monday the 20th with dead calm wind, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft. Tuesday the 21st sees a bump to 4ft, but the period tanks to 6 seconds – that’s junky windswell, all chop and no push. The energy hits 123, but it’s messy and onshore. Not worth paddling out.
The pattern stays weak and mostly cross-off or glassy with tiny swell right through to the 26th of July. Sunday the 26th afternoon finally shows a glimmer – 2ft from the east, 7-second period, clean cross-off wind, and the energy just cracks 100. It’s rideable, but honestly, it’s ordinary.
Now, here’s the one real highlight in the whole 16 days. Monday the 27th of July morning. That’s your best bet. The swell jumps to 7ft from the east-southeast, period 9 seconds – solid groundswell energy hitting 626. Wind is light from the south-southwest, cross-off, making for clean conditions. This is proper surf, but at 7ft, Red Beach is firmly for intermediate-to-expert surfers only. Beginners, stay on the sand. The break is inconsistent and fairly exposed, so you’ll get lulls, but the sets will have some real power. Crowds are possible, so don’t expect a solo session.
The rest of the week after that? Tuesday the 28th morning still has some decent 4ft swell with light wind, but the energy drops to 319. By afternoon, the wind swings cross-onshore and it gets choppy. Wednesday through Friday the 31st is a slow slide back to weak, onshore junk.
The very end of the run, into August, we see a weird little pulse of long-period swell – 16 seconds on the 1st of August – but it’s only 1.0ft. All period, no height. It’s clean, but barely surfable.
So, if you’re lookin’ for waves, your only real window is Monday the 27th of July morning. Otherwise, this stretch is a total bust. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a long, flat wait.
Rusty.
