The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming up over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: it’s a grim start. There’s really nothing worth paddling out for until we get into the back half of July. We’re looking at a solid week or more of tiny, weak slop with hardly any energy behind it. The combined energy values are all sitting in the two-digit range, mostly well under 100 (13 to 153), which tells you how limp it is. You’d be better off waxing a lawn chair.
The first real glimmer of hope, and honestly the only thing that’s got my pulse up, is Friday the 25th of July. That morning at Red Beach, we’ll see a pulse of swell from the north. It’s nothing massive—3 feet—but with a period of just 7 seconds, it’s a short period wind swell, so it’s not going to be the cleanest or most powerful. What makes it interesting is the wind: it’s blowing offshore from the west at 15 mph. That’ll keep the surface clean and make those little waves peel a bit better than the flat dribble we’ve been staring at. The combined energy is just 87, so it’s weak, but for a break that’s been nearly dead for a week, this is the standout. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but the consistency is “inconsistent,” so don’t expect a set every five minutes. The water is about average for this time of year, nothing crazy.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. The following days show a mix of tiny leftover pulses and some strong winds, but nothing that’ll make you rush to get your wetsuit on. We’ve got a few mornings with glassy conditions or gentle offshore breezes, but the swell is just too small—1 foot to 1 feet—and the energy is pitiful. The 29th and 30th of July have some strong breezes, but the swell is barely a ripple.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate, mark your calendar for Friday the 25th of July at Red Beach. It’s the only time in the next 16 days where the stars align just enough for a session. Other than that, it’s a long, flat wait.
Rusty.
