The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Rimmers Road.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a long, frustrating wait ahead. There’s no solid surf on the table until Thursday the 16th of July, and even then, it’s a pretty average day. The swell is there at 8ft from the WSW, with a very long 16-second period – proper groundswell energy – and the combined energy is strong at 3253. But the wind is onshore from the WSW at 9 mph, and the wave comment says it’s marginal. Not the kind of stuff that gets you out of bed early.
Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th see the swell holding around 7ft to 10ft from the SW, with periods around 15 seconds, and wind stays cross-onshore or onshore. The energy builds into the strong range (3715 on Saturday morning), but the forecast keeps talking about dodgy tide conditions or the swell being too big for this break. For a spot that’s very consistent and exposed to SW swell, when it’s over 8ft, it’s really only for the experts. The water temperature is about 58°F, which is pretty average for this time of year – nothing unusual there.
Sunday the 19th is the same story: big SW swell at 12ft with a 17-second period, massive energy at 6169, but again, it’s too big and cross-onshore. There’s a real lack of clean, manageable conditions through this whole first week.
From Monday the 20th onward, the swell drops back a bit – 8ft to 6ft – but the wind never really cleans up. It’s cross-onshore or onshore most of the time, and the wave comments stay marginal or poor. Wednesday the 22nd is a real low point: 4ft with onshore wind and poor surf conditions, score zero.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th have small swell, around 5ft to 6ft, and the wind is light cross-onshore or cross, but the combined energy drops to 623 and 808 – weak. The wave comments are still marginal.
Now, here’s the real standout. Sunday the 26th of July. The swell pumps up to 15ft from the WSW with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is massive at 6488. But the wind is offshore from the ENE at 6 mph – glassy clean. The wave comment says “wind and tide favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break.” At 15ft, that’s expert territory only. If you’ve got the skill and the nerve, this is the morning of the whole 16-day window. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-offshore from the SE, and the swell sits at 13ft. It’s a true heavy-water day.
Monday the 27th sees the swell dropping to 8ft, but the wind is cross and the comment is marginal. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are back to big, messy conditions – 12ft from the WSW, onshore or cross-onshore winds at 12-19 mph, and the energy is high but the surf quality is poor.
Honestly, for most surfers, this is a frustrating outlook. There’s heaps of swell, but the wind rarely plays ball, and when it does, the waves are way too big. The one true standout is Sunday the 26th of July for expert-level surfers only, with clean offshore wind and a massive, powerful groundswell. For the average punter, you’re better off waiting for another window.
Rusty.
