The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a good look at what’s cookin’ for Rimmers Road over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag, so hang tight.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 58°F which is pretty normal for this time of year – nothin’ to write home about.
Right now, and for the next few days, it’s a bit of a slow start. Tuesday morning the 14th is a write-off with a messy 5 foot cross-shore swell and weak energy (585). Not worth paddlin’ out. We’ve got a real dry spell here ’til things start lookin’ up.
Wednesday the 15th afternoon is where it gets interesting, but for the wrong reasons for most of us. We’ve got a solid 10 foot swell from the WSW with a long 16-second period – that’s a proper groundswell, energy is way up there (5026). Problem is, that’s too big for beginners, and even for most regulars at a beach break like this. That big, long-period stuff can make paddlin’ out easier between sets, but it also tends to close out on a beach. Thursday and Friday stay big too, with that 10 foot hanging around. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, so it’s not looking pretty for a paddle – honestly, that combo of size and chop might be more of a kite surfer’s playground.
Now, here’s the standout if you’re experienced: Sunday the 19th afternoon. We finally get some clean air with a gentle offshore breeze (9 mph from the East), and that 10 foot SW swell is still pumpin’ with enormous energy (4631). It’s big – expert only – but clean, offshore lines on a long-period groundswell. That’s the best session on offer in the first week.
The following week, things ease down into more manageable territory. Monday the 20th morning is a real gem. The swell drops to a more friendly 7 feet from the SW, still with good 15-second period, and the wind is light offshore from the East. Clean, lined-up, and powerful without being overwhelming. Moderate energy (2061), but for experienced surfers, this is the pick of the whole run. Crowds are “sometimes” an issue here, so you might have a few mates out but nothin’ crazy.
Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd keep that clean offshore wind going with smaller, fun-size swell (5 feet dropping to 4 feet). It gets weaker and smaller as we go, but still clean.
Later on, Sunday the 26th morning throws up another interesting one – a 8 foot WSW swell with a long 16-second period again, and a light cross-offshore breeze. Energy is strong (3529). It’s rated marginal in the data, so tide’s gonna be key, but the setup is there for a good session if you know the bank.
Wrap your head around this – the run finishes with a monster spike on Wednesday the 29th morning: a 16 foot swell with 13-second period and huge energy (8025). That’s a full-on, expert-only, big wave day, and the wind is light onshore so it’ll be challenging. Not your average Sunday sesh.
So, for the best on offer: Monday 20th morning for a clean, solid, offshore day. If you’re an expert who likes it big and clean, don’t miss Sunday 19th afternoon.
Rusty.
