Alright, Rusty here again, same spot, different numbers.
Mangawhai Heads is staring at a tough couple of weeks. Water temp at the start is 61°F – right around normal for this time of year, no big deal.
Monday the 6th is a dud – 5ft of north swell with a short 6-second period, side-offshore wind at 16 mph, and weak energy (280). The whole first week is a mess of small, short-period junk. Wednesday the 8th morning shows a little 2ft easterly swell with an 11-second period, clean wind from the SSW at 12 mph (energy 290), but it’s just too small. Thursday the 9th morning is the same story: 3ft easterly, clean wind (138 energy), but very ordinary.
Saturday the 12th afternoon turns glassy with a 2ft east swell (68 energy) and a 3 mph east wind – you could get wet, but you won’t get a wave.
After that, there’s a massive dry spell until we finally get a real shot. The only day that matters is Tuesday the 21st of July. That morning brings a clean 4ft easterly groundswell, 10-second period, light cross-off SSW wind at 6 mph (398 energy). Then the afternoon is the one: 8ft of north swell, 7-second period, clean cross-off wind from the SSW at 6 mph, and the energy jumps to 675. That’s a powerful, solid swell. At that size, Mangawhai Heads is for experienced crew only – the short period means it won’t be perfect, but if you’ve got the skills, that’s your window.
Nothing else in the 16 days comes close. There’s a big gap from the 13th to the 20th with no real surf. Circle the 21st afternoon, get your big-wave gear, and hope the wind stays true.
Rusty.
