The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Faria over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a real dry spell here. For the first ten days, from Tuesday the 18th of August right through to the end of the month, the surf is just not cooperating. The waves are tiny, mostly between 1 ft and 2 ft, and the wind is consistently cross-on or onshore. It’s choppy, it’s weak, and frankly, it’s not worth paddling out for. The combined energy is all over the shop, but mostly in the low to moderate range (67 to 273), and it’s just not enough to push anything decent. The water is a warm 70°, which is *much* warmer than normal for this time of year – over 5° above average – so it’s a nice swim, but not a surf.
The first real flicker of hope doesn’t show up until Saturday the 29th of August in the morning. We finally see a bit of a pulse, with 2 ft from the SSW and a period of 17 seconds. That’s a proper long-period groundswell, and the energy jumps up to 309 (moderate). The wind is light and onshore, so it’ll be a little bumpy, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The problem is, the swell is still small, and the break itself is a beach and reef setup that’s *fairly consistent* but can be a bit stop-start. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and with the small size, it’s not going to be dangerous. The crowds are *sometimes* an issue, so you might have some company.
The real standout, the one that’s got my attention, is later in the run. On Monday the 31st of August, the swell starts to build again, but the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September is where it gets interesting. We’re looking at 4 ft from the WNW, but with a short period of 6 seconds – that’s just windswell, not groundswell, so it’ll be a bit racy and crumbly. The energy is back up to 202 (moderate), and the wind is light and onshore. It’s not clean, but it’s the most size we’ve seen. Still, with the short period, it’s not going to be quality. For this spot, the ideal swell direction is SW, so this WNW pulse is a little off-angle, but it’ll still wrap in.
Honestly, there’s no real “go-time” in this window. The whole 16-day period is a struggle. I’d say keep an eye on the Tuesday the 1st of September morning for the biggest waves, but don’t expect perfection. The water is warm, the air is clear, but the surf is a real wait-and-see.
Rusty.
