The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Faria over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the surf is pretty much flat for the first week. There’s a whole lot of nothing happening from Thursday morning, August 20th, right through until the end of that week. The swell is tiny – we’re talking 1.0ft to 1ft on the SSW side, with a period that’s all over the place. The combined energy is weak, mostly under 100 (109) to start, and it barely climbs. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s not doing us any favours. It’s just poor surf conditions, day after day. If you’re a beginner, it’s not even worth paddling out for this.
The water temp is sitting at 69°F at the start, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s super unusual – feels like a warm bath out there.
Now, things start to get a little more interesting towards the end of the first week. On Monday, August 24th, we see the combined energy nudge up a bit (172) with a 1ft SSW swell, but still, the wave comment is poor. Not enough to get excited about.
The real standout of the whole forecast is the window from Wednesday, August 26th, through to the end of the month. The swell picks up to 2ft-3ft from the S and SSW, and the period gets into that sweet spot (14-15 seconds). The combined energy jumps into the mid-to-high 200s and even low 300s (344 on the 26th morning, 335 on the 26th afternoon, 294 on the 29th). That’s moderate wave energy for sure.
The best of the best looks like Wednesday, August 26th morning. We’ve got a 2ft S swell with a 15-second period, and the wind is light and onshore (WSW 6 mph). That 15-second period is a groundswell, which means more energy and better shaped waves, but it might break a bit straight at a beach break. Faria is a beach and reef setup, so it could handle it. The drawback is that it’s a "fairly consistent" break, and crowds are "sometimes" a problem. But for that morning, with light wind and a solid S swell, it’s your best chance for a clean wave.
Thursday, August 27th, also looks good. The morning has a 3ft SSW swell, 13-second period, and light onshore wind, with combined energy of 259 – still a solid option.
The second week, from September 1st, the swell drops off again. The period gets short (7 seconds or less) and the energy falls back under 200. It’s a pretty poor end to the outlook. The last hopeful day is Thursday, September 4th morning, with a 1ft SSW swell and a very long 18-second period, and light wind. But that’s a week and a half away – promising, but less certain.
If the swell gets bigger here, especially with these cross-onshore winds, it might be more interesting for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing. But for now, your best bet is the last week of August.
Stay stoked, Rusty.
