Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Faria over the next couple of weeks.
First up, I gotta be straight with you: there’s not much to get excited about for a good long stretch. Faria is a beach and reef setup that’s fairly exposed to the SW, and we’re looking at a run of tiny, weak swells with mostly onshore or cross-onshore wind. The water is running a touch warmer than normal at 64°, but that’s about the only bright spot.
For the first week and a half, we’re stuck with poor surf conditions. From now right through to the 12th of July, the swell is hovering around 1 ft to 2 ft, with periods ranging from 14 to 18 seconds. That long period sounds nice, but with such tiny height there’s just no push. The combined energy is mostly moderate, ranging from 119 up to 421, but it’s all on small, messy little waves. The wind is mostly from the WSW or SW at 5 to 15 km/h, and it’s cross-on or onshore, keeping things choppy and uninviting. Thursday the 9th of July has a flicker of a “marginal” call in the morning, but even that is 2 ft with light onshore wind – it’s barely worth paddling out for.
Then from the 13th to the 15th of July, the swell drops even further. We’re down to 1 ft to 2 ft, and the energy dips into the weak range, with values like 65, 72, and 93. That’s flat spells, plain and simple. Winds stay light and mostly onshore or cross-on, so there’s nothing to recommend.
Around the 17th and 18th of July, we see a bit of a bump. There’s a pulse on Friday the 17th with a 3 ft swell from the W, but the period is short at 9 seconds – that’s weak, mushy, and disorganised. Then Saturday the 18th shows another pulse of 3 ft from the W again, period 9 seconds, with more cross-onshore wind. The energy climbs back into the moderate range, up to 320, but it’s still not good surf. Short period, onshore wind, small height – that’s a recipe for chop and closeouts.
Honestly, folks, there’s no standout session in this 16-day window. There’s a gap of good surf that lasts pretty much the whole time. The setup here isn’t really working for us – the winds don’t line up, the swell is too small, and the few pulses that come through are poorly shaped for the beach and reef. If you’re set on going out, you might find a knee-high wave on a lucky tide, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. For paddle surfing, it’s a bust. If the wind picks up more from a cross-shore direction, this spot might look better for the kite crowd than us.
Stay patient, check back later – forecasts change.
Rusty.
