The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here.
First up, it’s a pretty grim outlook for the next 16 days at Faria. The swell is just too small and the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, messing up what little wave there is. The water temp is sitting at 68°F, which is a whopping 5°F warmer than average for this time of year – feels like a warm bath out there.
The first real window of something to even mention kicks off on Saturday the 18th of July. But honestly, it’s a non-starter. We’re looking at a tiny 1ft swell from the SW with a long 18-second period. The combined energy is weak (159), and with a cross-onshore wind at 9 mph, it’s just choppy, messy, and utterly unappealing. The whole first week is a bust. The swell stays tiny, never breaking 3ft, and the wind is always on it. Sunday the 19th through to Friday the 24th is all the same story: 1ft to 2ft, onshore or cross-onshore wind, and the notes say "poor surf conditions" every time.
We get a slight bump in energy around the 26th and 27th of July, with combined energy pushing into the 300s and 400s, but the swell height is still only 2ft to 2ft. The wind is still a light cross-onshore, which is better than a strong one, but it’s still not clean. The period is long (18-19 seconds), which is a classic groundswell, but for a beach and reef setup like Faria, that long period can make the waves break too straight and close out. For a beginner, the size is fine, but the conditions are just not good.
The best of a bad bunch is Monday the 27th of July. The morning shows a 2ft SW groundswell with a 18-second period, combined energy of 420 (solid moderate), and a light cross-onshore wind. The report calls it “marginal” but it’s the closest we get to something rideable for a surfer with some patience. The wind is light, so it won't be too choppy, but it’s still not clean. The afternoon of the 27th has a slightly better period (19 seconds) and the wind goes fully onshore, making it a bit of a funky paddle.
After that, from the 30th of July through to the 2nd of August, we see a bit more swell height, finally hitting 3ft on the 1st of August. But the wind is still crossing up and the period drops to 12-14 seconds, which is less powerful and more wind-swell in nature. The combined energy is still there (over 400 on the 30th), but the quality is just not there. The morning of the 1st of August has a 3ft S swell, 13-second period, and a light cross-onshore. It's the biggest swell of the entire 16-day forecast, but it's a short-period wind swell and the wind is still not good. It’s a kite-surf setup, not a paddle-surf setup.
So, there is truly no standout session here. The entire 16-day window is a washout. Faria is a beginner-friendly break because the swell never gets above 3ft, but the wind is always wrong. A few mornings in the last week (like the 27th of July) offer a tiny bit of hope with light winds, but the waves are still too small and weak. Keep your board waxed, wait for the forecast to change.
Rusty.
