The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Faria.

To be straight with you, it’s a quiet stretch. The first few days are a write-off for a proper paddle. Swell is tiny, mostly around 1 ft to 2 ft, and the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, messing up what little bump there is. The water is running at 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 6° above average, so that’s a pleasant surprise if you’re just floating around.

Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are pretty lifeless. We’ve got a weak, long-period groundswell from the SSW, around 13 seconds, but it’s only pushing 1 ft to 1 ft and the combined energy is low (53 to 142). Not enough to get excited about. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are more of the same – tiny waves, light onshore breezes, and the wave comment is “poor surf conditions” across the board.

The first hint of something marginally better shows up on Wednesday the 26th. The morning sees a slight bump to 2 ft from the S, with a period of 14 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 273. The wind is light and onshore, but it’s still just “marginal” at best. The afternoon is similar, with energy up to 347, but it’s still only a 1 out of 10 call. Not worth a trip.

We hit a bit of a flat patch again from Thursday the 27th through to the end of the month. Swell sizes bounce between 1 ft and 2 ft, but the wind is mostly cross-onshore, and the energy is middling (122 to 352). The wave comment keeps saying “poor” or “marginal.” There’s one weird window on Thursday the 27th afternoon where a 4 ft swell shows up from the WNW, but it’s got a pitiful period of just 6 seconds – that’s pure wind slop, no shape to it.

The first week of September doesn’t look much better, but there’s one thing that catches my eye. On Thursday the 3rd of September, the afternoon session shows a 2 ft swell from the SSW with a very long period of 21 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 393. That’s a proper groundswell pulse. The wind is light and onshore, which is a shame, but the period is long enough that it could wrap in and offer some shape, especially if you’re willing to sit deep. It’s still a “poor surf conditions” call, but that energy is notable.

Then on Friday the 4th of September, we get the best energy of the whole outlook. The morning has 3 ft from the SSW at 19 seconds, with combined energy hitting 501. That’s a solid, moderate to strong wave energy. The wind is light cross-onshore, but for that size and period, it’s the best option on the table. Faria is a beach and reef setup, fairly exposed to the SW, and the optimum swell direction is SW – so this SSW pulse is a good match. The crowds are “sometimes” here, so you might have a few others in the water, but nothing too crazy. The next day, Saturday the 5th, is similar but the wind picks up a touch to 9 mph from the S, making it a bit choppier.

In the end, the only real standout in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. It’s not tall, but the long period and strong energy (501) for a small wave make it worth a look. The morning of Thursday the 3rd is a close second. For the rest, it’s a lot of waiting and small, blown-out surf. If you’re desperate, you could paddle out on the 26th of August, but don’t expect much.

Rusty.
