The Lowdown
Right, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening out there.
Honestly, the first week or so is a bit of a bummer. Tiny, weak waves and the wind is mostly on it, making things messy. The ocean feels weirdly warm right now – water temp is about 69°, which is a good 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. Kinda like bathwater, but not in a good way for surf.
The first time you might want to paddle out is Wednesday 26 August. Faria is a beach and reef spot that’s usually fairly consistent, and we get a small bump of about 3ft from the S with a period of 14-15 seconds. That’s some decent groundswell energy, with the combined energy reading at 459 (moderate) on Wednesday afternoon. The wind goes completely glassy, a light 3 mph offshore from the SW, so it’ll be clean looking. It’s small and marginal, but it’s the best thing on offer so far. The break is fairly exposed to the SW swell direction, which is what we’re getting.
After that, it’s back to poor, gutless surf for a few days – small, onshore-affected chop. We see some longer period swells (15-19 seconds) on the 28th and 29th, but they’re only about 1ft to 2ft, so not enough push to make it worthwhile, even if the energy readings get up to 394 (moderate).
The one to wait for is Friday 4 September morning. We’ve got about a 3ft groundswell from the S, period of 16 seconds, and the combined energy reading climbs to 548 (moderate). The wind is offshore and light, just 3 mph from the SW, meaning it’ll be glassy and clean. The swell direction is bang on for the SW optimum Faria likes. It’s not big, but after all this flatness, that’s the morning to be in the water. Saturday the 5th morning is also decent – similar 3ft swell, clean offshore winds, and a 522 (moderate) energy reading.
So, a slow start, but a couple of clean, small-groundswell mornings to look forward to in early September. You just gotta be patient.
Rusty.
