The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s going on for the next couple of weeks. Faria is the only break in the picture, and it’s a tough stretch. There’s a big gap with nothing worth chasing.
From Sunday, August 23rd, right through to Saturday, August 30th, the surf is basically a no-go. Waves are tiny, mostly 0.3m to 0.7m, with onshore or cross-onshore winds making everything choppy and poor quality. You’ll see some long-period groundswell sneaking in, even up to 19 seconds, but with combined wave energy ratings between 56 (weak) and 451 (moderate), it’s just not producing any clean, ridable waves at this beach-and-reef setup. The water temperature is about normal for the season.
Then on Sunday, August 30th, the afternoon shows a "marginal" call. Swell is still just 0.5m from the SSW with a 15-second period, and combined energy is 299 (moderate). It’s the best thing going, but that’s not saying much. The wind is light and onshore, at least.
From Monday, August 31st, into early September, the swell picks up a bit to 0.8m, but the period drops to 9-10 seconds, giving you weak, short-period, lumpy waves. Combined energy sits in the moderate range (176 to 225), but it’s still "poor" quality. Offshore winds blow, but the waves just don’t have any push or shape. This is more of a kite-surfing wind than a paddle-surfing set.
By Wednesday, September 3rd, you’ll see a spike in period again – 20 seconds – with combined energy at 225 (moderate) in the morning. But with only 0.4m of height and onshore wind, it’s another false alarm. The long-period swell might have energy, but at a beach and reef break, it’s likely to close out too straight.
Your best shot comes Thursday, September 4th, through Saturday, September 6th. Swell holds around 0.7m to 0.8m from the SSW, with a consistent 16-17 second period, and combined energy climbs to 480 (moderate) by Friday afternoon. Winds are light and cross-onshore, but the mornings are glassy enough that a few clean waves could show. Consistency is "fairly consistent," so if you’re itching, this is the window. It’s still small for experts, but beginners could have some fun.
If I had to pick one, Friday afternoon, September 4th, or Saturday morning the 5th, is your best bet – highest energy and lightest wind. But don’t go in thinking you’ll score epic waves.
Rusty.
