Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next 16 days at Faria are a tough watch. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly average to poor conditions. The water’s sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, clocking in around 65°, with a positive anomaly of about 3°.
Things kick off on Saturday, 4th July, but there’s nothing to get excited about. We’ve got a mere 1ft of SSW swell pushing through, with a long period of 14 seconds. The combined wave energy is only 122 – dead weak. Winds are light and onshore in the morning turning cross-onshore in the afternoon, so it’s choppy and messy. “Poor surf conditions” is the call. Sunday and Monday are more of the same – tiny 1ft to 2ft swells, mostly SSW, with period hanging in the 14–18 second range. The energy does pick up a bit on Monday afternoon (247) and Tuesday morning (339), but the swell size is still pitiful, and the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore. That Tuesday morning 2ft from the SSW with that 18-second period might sound okay, but at those heights it’s barely knee-high.
Wednesday the 8th sees the biggest combined energy of the bunch, 414 on Wednesday morning, with 2ft SSW swell at 16 seconds, but it’s all blown out by light onshore winds. Thursday the 9th is the only morning that scrapes a “marginal” rating with 2ft SSW swell and light onshore wind – still not worth paddling out for in my book. From there, it’s a grim grind through to the middle of the month: heights stay below 2ft, periods drop into the 9–14 second range, and energy falls back to the 80s and 100s. Winds remain mostly cross-onshore.
The one omen that could turn things around comes right at the tail end. On Saturday the 18th of July, we see a glassy afternoon with winds going dead calm from the east at 0 miles per hour. That 1ft SSW swell (17-second period) and 205 energy won’t thrill you, but it’ll be the cleanest the place gets. It’s a “surfable but very ordinary” afternoon. Then Sunday the 19th is back to small and cross-onshore.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. Faria is a beach and reef break, fairly consistent in exposure to SW swell, but the numbers don’t lie – every session through this window is below par. The swell never cracks 3ft, and the winds are seldom your friend. Beginners will find nothing to learn on, and for anyone else, it’s a complete miss. This kind of blank run can happen – it’s a slump. Keep an eye on the longer range, though; forecasts can shift.
Stick with it, Rusty.
