The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you – the next 16 days for El Canal are a real bummer.
We’re looking at a stretch of nothing but cross-shore wind and lumpy, crummy conditions. The water temp is sitting at 83°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so you can’t even blame the cold for the lack of quality.
The whole run kicks off Saturday the 18th of July with a weak, short-period 5ft easterly swell pushing in, but it’s got a 7-second period and a moderate cross-breeze at 16 mph. The ocean’s got a nasty cross-chop on it, and the combined energy is weak at 205. It’s a mess. That same story holds through Sunday and Monday – 5ft of crumbly, wind-affected slop with the same easterly cross-wind. The energy stays in the moderate range, highest being 222 on Monday morning, but it’s all for nothing with that wind.
Things don’t get any better as we roll into the second week. By Wednesday the 29th of July, the swell is still 5ft, but the period drops to a pathetic 6 seconds, and the energy is moderate at 178. The wind is still a fresh cross-shore breeze. It’s just not surfable.
The only real standout is a slight improvement on Sunday the 26th of July, where the period finally bumps up to 8 seconds and the energy hits 314 - a moderate to strong pulse. But don’t get excited. The swell is 5ft with a fresh 22 mph cross-shore wind, leaving it lumpy and choppy. It’s a classic case of more energy, more mess. For a reef break like El Canal, that long-period groundswell would usually be a dream, but not with this wind direction.
Honestly, there isn’t a single day in this entire 16-day window where the conditions line up. It’s all cross-shore, all chopped up, and the "poor surf conditions" label is on every single record. El Canal is a fairly consistent spot, so this blank run is a rough one. We’ll have to hope the forecasts change.
Rusty.
