Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Hey, it’s Rusty. Gotta be straight with you – this outlook for Donuts is a slow one. The whole 16-day forecast is mostly a flat patch. The first real mention of surf comes on Friday the 3rd of July, and even that’s a letdown.
Friday the 3rd of July morning at Donuts: it’s a reef break that’s inconsistent and can get crowded sometimes. Swell is about 3ft out of the SW with a long 16-second period – that’s groundswell, good shape but longer waits between sets. The combined energy is moderate at 394. The wind is light onshore from the WNW, so it’s clean enough. But the surf quality is poor, so don’t get your hopes up.
Saturday the 4th sees 2ft to 2ft swell, same direction, with onshore and cross-onshore wind making it choppy. Energy around 421 – still poor.
Sunday the 5th is the best early on. Clear skies, gentle onshore breeze from the W at 9 mph. Swell is 2ft out of the SW, but the period is a very long 18 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, and for a reef it should line up nicely. Combined energy is 408. Water temp is about normal for this time of year. The catch is it’s inconsistent and sometimes crowded, so get there early if you can.
Monday the 6th hits with 3ft and 619 energy, but the wind is cross-onshore and it’s labeled poor. Tuesday the 7th shows 4ft and 760 energy, but again poor quality with onshore wind. Wednesday the 8th has 3ft and 846 energy, light onshore wind – still poor.
Thursday the 9th afternoon finally nudges up to “marginal” – that’s the first step up from poor. Swell is 3ft out of the SW with 16 seconds, wind goes cross-shore at 9 mph, so the surface should be tidy. Energy is 540. Still, it’s not a standout.
The second week is dead. From the 10th to the 18th, swell drops to 1ft to 3ft mostly, periods as low as 12 seconds. Energy falls under 260 most days. Winds are cross-onshore or light onshore. Friday the 17th gives a tiny spike to 2ft with a 19-second period and 377 energy, but the wind is onshore again. Saturday the 18th has 3ft and 538 energy with light wind – still poor.
The only day I’d call a standout is Sunday the 5th of July morning at Donuts. That 2ft of very long period groundswell with a gentle onshore breeze and clear sky is your best bet. It’s small, but clean and fun for an intermediate surfer. Watch out for the crowd.
No other breaks to mention. It’s a long dry spell. The setup might be better for kite surfers on those cross-onshore afternoons if you’re into that. For surfing, it’s a waiting game.
Stay patient, I’ll keep an eye on it. Rusty out.
