The Lowdown
Alright, let me break it down for ya. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for your local patch. Honestly, it’s a pretty frustrating stretch ahead. The forecast is a long 16-day slog with very little to get excited about. We’ve got a big gap of nothing worthwhile right up until the end of the first week. The first real chance that’s even worth a mention doesn’t show up until Sunday, July 19th, and even then it’s marginal.
Overall Pattern: The first few days are basically a write-off. We’re looking at small, weak, and messy swell with cross-shore winds leaving the surface lumpy. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 70°, which is nice, but the waves aren’t cooperating.
The Only Real Window: The best of a bad bunch is going to be around Sunday, July 19th. The surf finally gets a pulse, with a 5 ft swell from the SSW and a decent 13-second period. That’s some moderate energy kicking in (1116). The problem is, the wind is light and cross-onshore in the morning, which leaves it a bit bumpy, and it goes straight onshore in the afternoon. The tide is going to be a factor too. It’s not a day for beginners, that’s for sure. The size is pushing into the zone where it’s more for the experienced crew.
Donuts (Reef) is the only spot on the cards. It’s a sheltered reef, so it needs that swell from the west to really work, and this swell is coming out of the SSW, which is a bit off its optimum. The water is a touch warmer than usual at 70°, so that’s a small comfort. The crowds can be around sometimes, so you might have a few others in the same desperate boat.
The Long Game: After that little pulse, the surf drops again and stays small, weak, and blown out for most of the second week. There’s another pulse around Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th of July, with 5 ft swell from the SSW, but the wind is onshore and the quality is poor. The 26th of July has a 3 ft swell from the SW with a very long 19-second period (1139 energy), but it’s onshore again. The long period means it’ll be fat and might not break well at the beach, but the reef could handle it better. Still, the wind ruins it.
The very end of the run, around Monday the 27th of July, shows a 4–4 ft SW swell with a long period (18 seconds) and light onshore wind. The energy is strong (1265) but the quality is still marginal. Winds stay cross or onshore for the rest of the forecast, so don’t hold your breath.
Bottom Line: If you’re desperate, Sunday the 19th is your best shot, but don’t expect perfection. It’s a long, quiet period with only brief, compromised windows. The surf is inconsistent here, so this kind of blank run is more normal for the area. Keep an eye on it, but for now, the wax is staying in the wrapper.
Rusty.
