The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get straight into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next 16 days for Donuts. The first thing I gotta tell you is, this isn’t exactly a classic run. The whole period is pretty marginal, but let’s pick through the bones.
The best of the bunch is going to be Thursday the 31st of July into Saturday the 1st of August. Through the middle of the week leading up to that, we’ve got a few days of “marginal” conditions, which is better than the “poor” stuff we’re seeing at the start. From Sunday the 20th right through to Wednesday the 29th, it’s mostly a write-off—small, weak swell, and a lot of it is messy with cross-onshore winds. Donuts is a sheltered reef, and it’s inconsistent, so it needs a lot to line up.
The standout window kicks off Thursday the 31st of July. The morning sees a solid 5ft swell from the south, with a period of 16 seconds, which is proper groundswell. The combined energy is strong, hitting 1378. The wind is blowing onshore from the west at 6 mph, and it’s a light breeze, so the surface won’t be too chopped. By the afternoon, the swell bumps up to 7ft from the south, still with that 16-second period, and the energy jumps to 2120. That’s solid and powerful. This is over 5ft, so it’s getting too spicy for beginners, and at 7ft, it’s for the experienced crew. The wind is still onshore from the west-northwest at 9 mph, but it’s clean enough. The optimum direction for Donuts is west, and this swell is coming from the south, so it’s not the perfect angle for this spot, but the size and period will push through.
Saturday the 1st of August still has some size, with a 6ft swell from the south-southwest in the morning, period dropping to 12 seconds. The energy is still strong at 1068. The wind is onshore from the west-northwest at 9 mph. This is still a bit of a beast, and the period is shorter, but it’s the last decent push before everything fades out.
That’s really it. The rest of the run is mostly poor surf conditions, with tiny waves and bad wind lines. There’s a long gap of over a week before that little spike on the 31st, so don’t get your hopes up for anything before that. For a spot that rarely breaks, this is a bit of a tease.
Water temperature on the 19th of July was 71°F, which is about 4°F warmer than the long-term average. That’s notably warm for this time of year, so you’ll be in a spring suit or maybe just a rashie.
This is Rusty, signing off.
