Table - best surf conditions forecast for Donuts over the next 16 days.
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Donuts.
First thing you need to know: the water at Donuts is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Nice little bonus.
Now, the honest truth? The next week and a half is a write-off. From Wednesday, July 8th right through to the morning of Saturday, July 18th, it’s just poor surf conditions. We’re looking at wave heights barely scraping 3 ft, mostly from the SW, with a long period around 15-16 seconds. That’s a groundswell, and while it has some energy, the combined energy readings are all in the moderate range (between 245 and 909). The problem is the wind. It’s almost always cross or cross-on, and often with a moderate breeze, leaving a chop on the surface. The quality just isn’t there for a paddle. Honestly, for a beach-and-reef setup like this, with that size and cross-shore wind, it’s looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for a lot of that stretch.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Saturday morning, July 18th. We get a 3 ft SW swell, period jumping to 18 seconds, and the wind is light and straight on. The combined energy is moderate (550). It’s still only a marginal shout, but the light onshore wind could make it rideable.
The standout, the one worth circling on your calendar, is Sunday, July 19th. The swell jumps up to a solid 6 ft from the SSW, with a period of 16 seconds. That’s a moderate wave energy reading of 1615 in the morning. The wind is light and onshore. At 6 ft, it’s getting a bit sizey for beginners, but for an intermediate surfer, this is the best on offer. The clean, light wind conditions will be the key. Just keep in mind that long period swell at 16 seconds can make the waves break a bit straight at a beach break, but with the right tide, it should have some push.
After that, the surf drops back down to 3 ft - 4 ft through the following week, with the wind turning cross-on again, so that Sunday is your clear target. It’s a long-range call, so less certain, but it’s the only real pulse in the whole forecast.
Rusty.
