Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for our little stretch here. It’s gonna be a real quiet run for a while. The swell’s there, but the quality just isn’t cooperating. Most of the time the wind’s messing it up, making it choppy and ugly. The first surf worth paddling out for isn’t until Thursday, the 9th of July, and even then it’s only just scraping a look-in.
Thursday morning the 9th of July is the first glimmer at Donuts. We’ve got a clean 3 ft SW groundswell pushing in with a period of 16 seconds. That long period means proper energy and long waits between sets – good for picking your moment. The wind will be light from the SSW, but it’s cross-on, so there’ll be a bit of surface texture. The combined energy is moderate at 626, but the conditions are only marginal. It’s an inconsistent reef break, so you might spend more time watching than riding. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year.
From there, things drop right off again. The next week is pretty much a write-off with onshore and cross-onshore winds ruining any chance of clean waves. The swell energy actually builds into the moderate-to-strong range by Tuesday the 7th (787), but the wind is just not right for this spot. It’s a tough stretch.
Looking way out to Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, we see the swell dropping back to 2 ft to 2 ft, with a long period of 16-19 seconds. The wind looks cleaner, offshore from the W or WNW, but the size is tiny. For an inconsistent reef break that’s already a gamble, those are just not enough to get excited about. The best you can say is it’s a promise of clean, small waves if the swell direction holds.
So, to be straight with you: the only real standout, and it’s a very small one, is that Thursday morning the 9th. If you’re desperate, you could paddle out, but don’t expect much. The long gap of poor conditions after that is the main story here. It’s a flat spell for this area, and it’s not unusual for it to go quiet like this.
Rusty.
