Table - best surf conditions forecast for Donuts over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim start. We’re looking at a real dry spell here. There’s no surf worth paddling out for at all for the first two weeks. The data shows a solid block of poor surf conditions from Saturday the 11th of July through to Friday the 24th of July. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the wave quality is just not there. It’s a real bummer, but it’s a long stretch of flatness.
The only real glimmer on the horizon is a potential change-up on the 26th of July. The swell actually starts to wind up on the 25th, with a big jump in combined energy (889), but it’s still getting blown-out by onshore winds. That’s not the day.
But then, look at Sunday the 26th of July. For *Donuts*, we’ve got a long-period groundswell rolling in from the SW at 3 ft. The period is a solid 18 seconds, which means it’s got some serious energy behind it, and the combined energy is strong (663). The real kicker here is the wind. It’s going glassy in the morning. That’s a major positive. This is a sheltered reef break, and a glassy, clean SW groundswell is exactly what it wants. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 70°F.
Now, a word of caution on this one. This break is "inconsistent", so you’ll be waiting for sets, but when they come, they could be really good. The swell direction is from the optimum direction (W) for this spot. The difficulty is for intermediates, so it’s not a beginner wave. And because it’s a spot that’s "inconsistent", don’t expect a crowd, but it says crowds are "sometimes" there, so you might not be alone.
So, the verdict: The next two weeks are a write-off for Donuts. Don’t even bother checking the forecast until the 26th. That Sunday morning is the only window that’s offering anything half-decent, and it’s a long way off, so keep your fingers crossed that the glassy wind holds. If you have to get wet before then, the setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Rusty.
