The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ around Dongara-Port Denison.
We’re lookin’ at a bit of a slow burner, but there’s some real promise if you’re patient. The water temp here is sittin’ about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The first proper window isn’t until Monday the 26th of August, so the weekend ahead is pretty quiet—just small, cross-shore slop in the 5ft range with a big ol’ cross-chop, not worth paddlin’ for.
Now, Monday the 26th morning is where things start to get interesting. We’ve got a solid 10ft SW groundswell with a long 19-second period. That’s a heap of energy (7332), and the northwest wind is light and cross-on, makin’ it a bit bumpy but still rideable for the crew that knows what they’re doin’. This spot is a reef, so that long-period groundswell will set up nicely. Come afternoon, though, the wind picks up to 25 km/h and the swell jumps to 13ft—that’s too big for most, and the conditions go ordinary.
Wednesday the 28th Friday morning is a good call—7ft of SW swell, clean with a cross-off SE breeze at 30 km/h. That’s a clean, fast wave. The energy’s moderate (1607), and with a 13-second period, it’ll have some punch. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, so keep your eyes peeled for a quiet bank.
The standout, no question, is Sunday the 30th of August morning. We’ve got 8ft of SW groundswell, long 18-second period, and glassy offshore winds from the ENE at just 10 km/h. That’s the kind of mornin’ you dream about. The combined energy is strong at 4030, and the water will be clean as a whistle. This one’s for the experienced—8ft on a reef is no joke for learners, but for the rest of us, it’s a gem. Crowds are possible, but with conditions that good, you’ll be pullin’ into some beauties.
Lookin’ further out, the 3rd of September Thursday morning has 8ft of SW swell with a cross-off SE breeze, clean and solid (1977 energy). It’s another one for experienced surfers, and it’s worth a look if you can wait. Then on the 6th of September Sunday, we get a massive 18ft SW swell (17171 energy) that’s predicted to be too big for this break—maybe one for the tow crew or just to watch.
The second week has a few options: the 2nd of September Wednesday morning is clean with 6ft, and the 5th of September Saturday morning is a nice 5ft with clean conditions. But overall, that Sunday the 30th is your best bet—grab it while you can.
