The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, lookin’ at the next couple of weeks for our patch. We’ve got a slow start, but hold tight – there’s some proper gems comin’ through.
The first real surf shows up on Saturday the 18th of July, but it’s a bit of a mess. A solid 8ft SW swell rollin’ in, period around 13 seconds, but we’ve got a cross-on SW wind at 12 mph kickin’ up chop. The combined energy is strong (3036), so there’s grunt, but it’s not clean. Saturday afternoon cleans up a touch with a 12ft SW groundswell – 17-second period, that’s proper long period energy – and the wind drops to a gentle cross-shore. The energy readings jump to 6177, massive, but the report says marginal due to tide. I’d call it a big, raw ocean.
Now, Sunday the 19th – that’s the one to circle. Morning session at Dongara-Port Denison (reef) with a 8ft SW swell, 15-second period, and a lovely ESE offshore breeze at 9 mph. The guidance says this spot is exposed to the W swell, and this clean offshore wind will make it glassy and organised. The energy is 2994, so it’s got punch. It’s a reef break, so that long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely with shape. For experienced surfers, this is where you wanna be. Crowds are only sometimes an issue, so you’ll get waves.
Monday the 20th keeps the good vibes goin’. Morning has a 6ft SW swell, 13-second period, with a light cross-off breeze from the SSE. The energy drops to 1037, so it’s moderate, but the conditions are clean. Again, it’s a reef break, so it’ll hold. The afternoon picks up a bit of cross-shore chop, but the morning is the pick.
After that, the week settles into a rhythm. Tuesday through to Friday the 24th sees swell dropping to 5ft – 6ft, mostly SW, with periods around 13-14 seconds. Morning winds are often offshore or cross-off, keeping it clean. The energy sits between 744 and 1484, so moderate. These are good, workable days, but nothing that screams standout. Perfect for a longboard or a funboard.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th – there’s a bit of a lull. Swell dips to 4ft – 5ft, with cross-on winds, but Sunday the 26th morning fires up again. A 5ft SW swell with a 20-second period – that’s ridiculously long period groundswell – and a light offshore ESE breeze. The energy is a solid 2042. Reef break, long period, clean – it’ll be a special moment.
Monday the 27th is another strong one. Morning has a 7ft SW swell, 16-second period, crisp ENE cross-off wind at 6 mph, and the energy is 2087. That’s a proper session. Tuesday the 28th afternoon goes glassy – 5ft SW swell, 13-second period, with a 3 mph WNW wind, making it glassy. The energy is 746, so smaller, but sometimes a glassy day beats a big, messy one.
Into the second week, we’ve got a few more solid windows. Wednesday the 29th morning: 5ft SW swell, 14-second period, with a light offshore ENE wind. Energy 1721. Clean and fun. Thursday the 30th has a 8ft SW swell, 16-second period, with a cross-off SE wind at 12 mph. Energy 3142. That’s strong, but it’s marginal for quality – might be a bit lumpy. Friday the 31st morning: a fresh 19 mph offshore wind from the E, with a 6ft SW swell, 15-second period, and energy 2102. That’s a clean, powerful morning.
The real standout for the second week? Saturday the 1st of August. The afternoon goes glassy – 6ft SW swell, 17-second period, with a 3 mph ENE wind. Energy 2072. That’s a picture-perfect afternoon. Sunday the 2nd of August morning: 6ft SW swell, 16-second period, with a light cross-off NNE wind at 6 mph. Energy 1394. Clean, solid, no crowds.
As for the water temp – it’s sitting around average for July, so no surprises. Grab a steamer and you’re golden.
The gap at the start from today until Saturday the 18th is quiet – no decent surf to speak of. After that, the run of waves is pretty consistent, with only a few smaller days.
Best on offer? I’d say Sunday the 19th morning and Monday the 27th morning. The energy, the swell size, and the offshore winds line up beautifully. The glassy sessions on Saturday the 1st of August afternoon are also a real treat.
Rusty out.
