The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and let's have a look at what's coming up for our local patch over the next couple of weeks. It's a classic winter run, with plenty of size and power, but the wind is going to be the main player in whether we get waves or just a washing machine. The standout is without a doubt the very first window, so listen up.
Right off the bat, Monday morning the 24th of August, and it's game on. Dongara-Port Denison is looking absolutely pumping. You've got a solid 8ft SW groundswell, and that's packing a serious punch with wave energy up at 2119. The real kicker? It's dead glassy, zero wind. That's the kind of session you dream about. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so you won't need the thickest rubber. This is a proper reef break, and with that kind of power, it's only for experienced surfers. The swell is coming from the west, which is right in the sweet spot for this spot.
The rest of that Monday afternoon sees the wind swing to a 9 mph cross-on, chopping it up. Tuesday the 25th is a bit of a write-off, with cross-onshore winds all day and the swell dropping to 5ft. Wednesday the 26th gets ugly, with a huge 13ft SW swell and strong cross-onshore winds. That's a full on stormy mess, not for paddling.
Thursday the 27th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning has a clean 10ft SW swell with cross-offshore winds, which is a chance for a more experienced surfer to get a few. The afternoon gets a bit messy with cross-shore winds.
Friday the 28th is another good call. The morning has a clean 7ft SW swell with a solid 16 mph offshore wind from the ESE. That's going to be absolutely clean and lined up, but that offshore wind is fresh, so it'll be a battle to get out the back. The wave energy is moderate at 1364. It's a solid session for the experienced crew.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th of August offers a mixed bag. Saturday morning is a smaller 4ft SW swell, but it's clean. The real highlight is Saturday afternoon – a 5ft SW swell with a 16-second period and gentle offshore wind. It's a beautiful, clean window with wave energy of 1705. Sunday the 30th has a bigger 8ft SW swell in the morning, clean, but then the afternoon is the pick with a 8ft SW swell and light cross-offshore winds, and wave energy sitting at 2676. Both days are worth a look.
The following week from Monday the 31st through to Thursday the 3rd of September is a bit of a holding pattern. The swell stays around 6ft to 7ft, and the winds are generally cross or cross-off, keeping it cleanish but nothing special. Wave energy is moderate, and the crowds are a possibility, so it'll be a bit of a scrum.
Then we get a long-range standout that's worth circling on the calendar. Saturday the 5th of September the morning session is looking like a monster. An 12ft SW groundswell, very long period at 16 seconds, and light cross-shore winds. The wave energy is huge at 5649. This is a massive, powerful groundswell that will be lining up at the reef. It's a serious, expert-only day. The waves will be powerful and clean, but that long period means it'll be walling up, so it's a pick-and-choose affair.
The final few days, the 6th to the 8th of September, keep the size up. Sunday the 6th is a write-off due to a fresh breeze, but Monday the 7th and Tuesday the 8th are gold. Monday the 7th has a 10ft SW swell with fresh offshore winds, and Tuesday the 8th has an 8ft SW swell with light offshore winds. Both are excellent for experienced surfers, and the wave energy is still strong.
Rusty.
