The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. We’ve got a solid run of southerly groundswell heading into the Dongara-Port Denison stretch over the next couple weeks, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. This is a reef setup that loves a west swell direction, and we’re seeing a consistent pulse of southwest groundswell, but the size and power will push it firmly into experienced surfer territory most days. There’s a few clean windows where it’ll be worth paddling out, but you’ll need to pick your moments.
The best session of the whole outlook lands on the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. It’s pulling a solid 9.8ft of SW groundswell with a long 16 second period, and the energy is thumping at 5408 (strong). The wind is light from the SE, offshore and clean, and the water will feel about average for this time of year. That is serious, powerful, heavy reef surf – only for experts, but absolutely world-class. Don’t even think about it if you’re not confident.
Before that, we’ve got a few good early mornings. Thursday the 20th of August starts with a 9.8ft SW swell, 16 second period, offshore ESE breeze, and energy at 4762 (strong). It’s big and clean, but again, serious size for experienced surfers only. Friday the 21st of August morning also shapes up well – 8.2ft SW, 15 seconds, clean offshore east wind at 12 mph, energy at 2971 (moderate to strong). Another excellent session for those with the skills.
Monday the 24th of August morning is a quieter standout – 6.9ft SW, 14 second period, glassy east wind, energy at 1863 (moderate). That’s a nice, clean, manageable size for the experienced crew, and crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get in early.
The final week has some promise but is less certain. Thursday the 27th of August morning has 7.9ft SW, 15 seconds, offshore east wind, energy at 2457 (moderate to strong). Monday the 31st of August morning offers a clean 4.9ft WSW swell with offshore east wind at 16 mph, energy 1838 (moderate). And Tuesday the 1st of September looks clean all day with 5.2ft SW, 14 seconds, and offshore then cross-off winds – energy around 1100 (moderate). Those are solid, clean, but not the standouts of the first week.
A few afternoons get chopped up by strong southerly winds, and by the end of the run, size drops right away. From the 28th onward, you’re mostly looking at small, lumpy leftovers. The gap between the last really good morning and the end of the forecast is a few days of marginal or poor surf.
Overall, the highlight is the Wednesday the 26th of August morning – that’s the one to circle on the calendar. Get out there.
