The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the scoop on what's coming our way for the next couple of weeks. It’s a wild ride, so let’s get into it.
The pattern kicks off with a huge pulse of groundswell hitting us on Tuesday, August 18th. The water’s sitting at 66°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don’t be shy with the rubber. The standout window is clearly Tuesday morning at Dongara-Port Denison (Dongara-Port-Denison). We’re looking at a solid 13ft swell from the WSW, with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s some serious energy, with combined swell energy hitting 7632, which is strong power for sure. The wind is glassy from the NNE at just 3 mph, making for some incredible conditions. This is strictly for expert surfers though – at this size and with that period, a reef break like this will be barreling and powerful. It’s not for the faint of heart.
The swell eases a touch through Wednesday and Thursday, but still offers up good early sessions. Wednesday morning, August 19th, is completely glassy, with an 8ft SW swell and a 15-second period. That’s clean and clean again. Thursday morning, August 20th, also looks tidy with a 10ft SW swell and a cross-off breeze from the ESE at 9 mph. The energy is still potent, around 4762, so there’s plenty of grunt. Friday morning, August 21st, keeps the trend going with an 8ft SW swell and an offshore breeze from the East. The wind will be clean, the sets will have shape, and it’s a solid option for experienced surfers.
Into the weekend and early next week, things go a bit average. The wind turns onshore or cross-shore and the swell drops. The 23rd and 24th have messy conditions and weaker energy down to around 1285 to 1558. Not worth getting excited about. That run of poor to marginal conditions lasts a few days right through to the 25th.
Then things pick up again. Wednesday, August 26th, is a very promising call. Early morning sees a 8ft SW swell with a 15-second period, combined energy of 3280, and a light offshore ESE breeze at 6 mph. Conditions are clean, and the wave quality will be excellent for those with a bit of experience. This is a solid second highlight in the outlook.
The following weekend, August 29th, offers another chance. Saturday morning and afternoon both have offshore winds from the ENE and ESE respectively, with a 7ft to 8ft SW swell, period around 16 to 17 seconds. The energy is still strong (2728 and 2727), and the offshore breeze will keep the faces clean. This is another day for the experienced crew.
Heading into early September, the swell bumps up again. Tuesday, September 1st, morning is a standout. We get an 12ft WSW swell with a 16-second period and glassy conditions from the SSE at just 3 mph. The combined energy is a huge 6185, and the phrase “exceptional” doesn’t come around often. For the experts, this is the one to circle on the calendar. The window of good surf then continues into Wednesday, September 2nd, with a 10ft SW swell, clean conditions, and moderate energy of 3720.
So, to sum it up: the two big standouts are the morning of August 18th and the morning of September 1st. The first is a massive, powerful groundswell with perfect glass, and the second is another huge pulse with absolute perfection. In between, there are a few decent mornings, particularly the 26th and 29th for experienced surfers. There’s a gap of a few days of poor to marginal conditions in the middle of the second week (around the 23rd to 25th), but the forecast looks promising overall. This spot is a reef, so it can handle the longer period swells well, but at these sizes, know your limits.
Stay safe, pick your sessions wisely, and I’ll see you out there.
