Alright, this is Rusty talkin’, and I’ve got my eyes on the charts for our local patch. It’s a bit of a slow burn to start, but we’ve got some serious juice lining up if you’re patient.

We’re looking at Dongara-Port Denison as the main show, and right off the bat, the water’s sittin’ at 68°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – so you’ll want that extra rubber.

The first few days are a bit of a tease. Friday the 10th has some swell, but it’s a cross-shore mess and the energy’s weak (690). It’s a pass. Saturday the 11th cleans up nicely with a light cross-offshore breeze and a small but rideable 3 ft to 4 ft SW swell, but it’s nothing to write home about. We’re just waiting.

Then, Sunday the 12th. That’s where the window cracks open. A solid 8 ft to 7 ft SW groundswell rolls in, with a super long period of 17 seconds. The energy jumps up big time (3233). Winds are light and cross-offshore, so it’s gonna be clean. This is good for experienced surfers – that size and that long period means the waves will have some serious punch and shape. It’s a reef break, so that long period will wrap in nicely. But heads up, it’s on the bigger side for a beginner.

Monday the 13th is the standout. We’re talking a 10 ft SW swell with a 17-second period, and offshore winds in the morning. The energy is cranking (4749) – that’s proper power. This is expert territory, but the conditions are pristine. If you’ve got the balls and the board, this is the session to target. The afternoon stays clean with a 8 ft swell.

Tuesday the 14th afternoon is a real gem. The swell drops back to a still-solid 7 ft with a 15-second period, but the wind goes glassy. Dead calm. That’s a rare treat, and the waves will be like mirrors. Still a bit big for the weekend warriors, but for the crew that knows the reef, it’s a dream.

We get a bit of a lull mid-week with some onshore junk and choppy water from Wednesday the 15th through Friday the 17th. The swell hangs around but the wind screws it up. That stretch is a write-off.

Then, hold onto your board. Saturday the 18th is a monster. A 15 ft SW swell with a 19-second period. The energy is insane (14263). But the wind is cross-onshore and howling, so it’s going to be a total washing machine. This is kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing.

The real second-week payoff comes Sunday the 19th. The swell is still a massive 12 ft to 10 ft, but the wind drops. Sunday morning is clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, and Sunday afternoon goes glassy. That’s exceptional, expert-level surf. The reef will handle that size perfectly.

The rest of the second week has some clean, smaller days for the more experienced crew, like Monday the 20th morning with glassy 7 ft surf, and a few mornings with clean offshore winds and 5 ft to 7 ft swells through the 21st, 23rd, and 24th. Nothing mind-blowing, but solid if you need a fix.

The very end of the outlook, Saturday the 25th, shows a 8 ft – 10 ft swell building again, but with cross-shore winds that are a bit stronger, so it’s less reliable.

So, bottom line: the absolute best on offer is Monday 13th July morning for the sheer power and perfection, and Sunday 19th July for the massive, clean groundswell on the reef. Mark your calendars.

Rusty.
