The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s break down what’s coming for Dongara-Port Denison over the next couple weeks.
We’re looking at a solid run of swell but with plenty of wind interference early on, then a few clean windows that really stand out. The main event is Monday the 24th – glassy, good size, clean. Later in the first week there’s a big pulse that’s only for the brave with the right wind. Week two settles into cleaner but smaller mornings, with a couple of excellent sessions if you’re experienced.
Water temp is normal for this time of year – no big anomaly.
Starting Saturday the 22nd: we’ve got a 7ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period in the morning, but the wind is cross-shore from the NNW at 6 mph, and it’s called marginal – not worth rushing for. Afternoon sees the wind swing SSW and pick up to 16 mph cross-on, swell builds to 8ft but conditions turn poor.
Sunday the 23rd is flat and uninspiring – 5ft SW swell, moderate cross-shore breeze, weak energy. Leave it be.
Monday the 24th morning is where it’s at. Glassy calm, zero wind, with a 8ft SW groundswell (14 seconds) packing moderate-strong energy. The report says excellent for experienced surfers. That’s your top session – too big for beginners but on this reef the long-period groundswell will produce nice, lined-up waves. Crowds are only sometimes an issue, so you might have company but nothing crazy.
Tuesday the 25th morning stays glassy with a smaller 5ft SW swell (12 seconds, weak-moderate energy) – nice for a quieter, easier paddle.
Wednesday the 26th goes wild: 10ft SW swell building under onshore 19 mph W wind, energy spikes to moderate-strong. By afternoon it’s 13ft with an 18-second period and 19 mph cross-on wind – that’s full kite-surf conditions.
Thursday the 27th cleans up with a cross-off SSE breeze at 12 mph, 10ft to 8ft SW groundswell (15-16 seconds), moderate-strong energy. Clean and powerful – best for experts.
Friday the 28th morning: offshore E wind at 19 mph cleans up a 6ft SW swell (13 seconds, weak-moderate energy). It’s marginal but clean and dropping.
Saturday the 29th afternoon shapes up nicely: offshore E wind at 9 mph, 4ft SW swell but with a very long 17-second period, weak energy but clean and fun – the report says very good surf.
Sunday the 30th afternoon is excellent for experienced surfers: 7ft SW groundswell (16 seconds, moderate energy), clean with a light SE breeze at 3 mph across-offshore.
Monday the 31st morning: 7ft SW swell, 18-second period (very long), moderate energy, light NNE cross-off at 6 mph and clean – another standout for big-wave crew.
Into the second week, sizes drop but mornings stay clean. Tuesday the 1st of September has 7ft WSW swell (16 seconds) but cross winds. Wednesday the 2nd bumps to 8ft SW (14 seconds) with cross-shore – only for the keen. Thursday the 3rd morning is the best of week two: 7ft SW swell, 14 seconds, light SSE cross-off at 6 mph, clean and rated excellent for experienced surfers. From Friday onward it’s 6ft to 6ft SW swells, light winds, mostly marginal – still fun on the right board.
The two real standouts: Monday the 24th morning for that glassy 8ft groundswell, and Monday the 31st morning for the 7ft with the 18-second period – both for experienced surfers only, both clean and powerful on this reef.
Stay salty,
Rusty
