The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Dongara-Port Denison. This is a reef set-up that loves a solid W swell, and we’ve got a decent run of energy on the cards, though we have to wade through some average conditions first.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off. Friday the 17th and Saturday morning the 18th are messy with onshore winds and poor surf. It’s not until Saturday afternoon, the 18th, that things start to get interesting. That’s our first real standout. The swell jumps to 12ft from the SW with a long 17-second period, and the combined energy is pumping hard at 6250 (moderate to strong). The wind swings light cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy but very powerful. At 12ft, this is strictly for experienced surfers only – it’s too big for beginners. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
We’ve got a gap of a few days of smaller, cleaner but less exciting surf from Sunday the 19th into Monday the 20th. The standout session for the cleaner, more manageable surf comes on Tuesday morning, 21st July. The swell drops to 5ft from the SW, with a 14-second period (groundswell) and the combined energy is 874 (weak). The wind is glassy, dead calm, and the report says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the pick for the first week for anyone wanting a clean, fun wave without the heavy crowd pressure – though crowds are possible here.
Another highlight arrives on Wednesday morning, 22nd July. We’ve got 6ft from the SW at 13 seconds, with a gentle offshore wind from the E. The energy is 1408 (moderate), and the conditions are described as “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” It’s clean, offshore, and has enough push.
Looking further out, the second week has some promising but less certain options. The 27th of July (Monday) afternoon sees 6ft from the SW with a 15-second period, gentle offshore wind, and a combined energy of 1538 (moderate). It’s another “excellent” call for experienced surfers. Then, the 30th of July (Thursday) afternoon is a true standout for the long-range period. The swell is 5ft from the SW, period is a very long 20 seconds (groundswell), and the energy is 3225 (moderate). The wind is light from the SE, and the report says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” with a score of 5. This is a big, long-period swell that will be best on this reef – it might break a bit too straight on a beach, but here it should line up nicely. Crowds are possible.
The last day in the outlook, 1st August (Saturday) morning, still has 6ft from the SW at 17 seconds, with a clean cross-off breeze and moderate energy (2190). It’s another good option for the experienced.
So, to sum it up: the best wave on offer is the big, powerful 12ft session on Saturday the 18th for the experts, and the clean, glassy 5ft on Tuesday morning the 21st for everyone else. The long-range standout is the 30th of July with that very long period groundswell and light winds.
Rusty.
