The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the next couple of weeks for Dongara-Port Denison. The water is sitting at 68°, which is about 2° cooler than what’s normal for this time of year, so it’s a touch on the chilly side, but nothing crazy.

The week starts off with a bit of a bang, but you’ll have to be on your game. The standout window is *Sunday morning, July 19th* at Dongara-Port Denison (reef). We’ve got a solid 8 ft swell from the southwest, pushing a huge amount of energy (2994) with a long 15-second period between sets. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the ESE, which will keep the faces clean. This is a powerful, groundswell-driven wave that will be lining up nicely on the reef, but at this size, it’s one for experienced surfers only. The water is a bit cooler than average, but that’s a minor detail when the surf is this good.

Monday morning, July 20th, is still a solid option. The swell drops to 6 ft from the SW, but the period stays at a punchy 13 seconds. The energy is still moderate (1037), and with a light ESE cross-offshore breeze in the clear morning air, you’ll find clean, rippable walls. This is a good call for the intermediate crew looking for a manageable session.

Tuesday, July 21st, is a sleeper hit. The morning has clean 5 ft SW swell, and the afternoon bumps up slightly to 5 ft, both with a nice 14-second period. The wind stays cross-offshore from the SSE. The energy is moderate (874 and 1048), and the conditions are described as very good to excellent. It’s a consistent, fun day.

Wednesday, July 22nd, brings a proper offshore blow from the east at 12 mph in the morning. The swell is 6 ft from the SW, 13-second period, and the energy is moderate (1053). The wind is offshore, grooming the waves to perfection. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but the morning is the pick.

Thursday, July 23rd, the wind cranks up from the ENE at 19 mph early, creating a fresh offshore and clean conditions for the 6 ft SW swell. The afternoon settles down with a lighter offshore breeze for a 6 ft swell. The energy is moderate (1382 and 1139). This is a wind-swell day, but the offshore component will make it surfable.

After Thursday, the swell drops off significantly. From Friday, July 24th, through the weekend, we’re looking at a real lull, with waves falling to 3 ft and below. The wind turns onshore and cross-onshore, making it ugly. The conditions are rated poor, and honestly, it’s not worth paddling out. There’s a gap of about 3 days with no real recommendations.

The surf starts to rebuild Monday, July 27th, but it’s messy. The swell is 7 ft to 8 ft, but the wind is strong and cross-onshore, creating choppy, blown-out conditions. This is a kite-surfing setup more than a paddle-surfing one.

The real buzz is for the tail end of the period. Tuesday morning, July 28th, is a redemption window with a light offshore wind from the ENE, 6 ft SW swell, and a 14-second period. The energy is moderate (1356), and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers.

Then, the big one. Thursday, July 31st morning and Friday, August 1st are the absolute standouts of the entire forecast. The swell jumps to a meaty 12 ft from the SW and WSW, with a period of 16 to 17 seconds. The combined energy is massive (6224 and 6394). The wind is offshore and cross-offshore, keeping the waves clean. This is a serious, powerful groundswell hitting the reef. It’s massive, and it’s only for experts. The size and energy are off the charts, and the consistency will be there. The whole run from July 31st through August 2nd is pumping with 10 ft to 12 ft swell and clean winds. The Sunday afternoon, August 2nd, has a light ESE cross-offshore breeze and 10 ft swell, making for a slightly less intense but still epic session.

So, to wrap it up: the first week has a few solid days, especially Sunday the 19th and Tuesday the 21st. The middle of the week is a write-off. The real gold is waiting at the end of the month, starting July 31st and running into the first days of August. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but it looks promising.

Stay safe out there.

Rusty.
