The Lowdown
Alright, grab your wettie, let's talk about what's coming up for Dongara-Port Denison.
Alright, let’s be honest, this outlook is a test of patience for most of us. The first real clean window we get is Friday morning, the 21st of August. We’ve got a solid 8ft SW groundswell rolling in with a long 15-second period, and the wind is howling offshore from the east at 12 mph. That's going to make for some absolutely clean, groomed lines. The wave energy is pumping hard at 2971 (moderate to strong), so this is proper, powerful swell. But fair warning, at this size and strength, this is one for the experienced crew only. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a 4/3 will be your best mate.
After that morning session, it gets a bit messy. The wind swings around, and through Saturday and Sunday we’ve got a mix of cross-shore and cross-onshore breezes that’ll put a chop on things. Sunday morning the 23rd is a bit smaller at 5ft and clean with a cross-offshore wind, but the energy has dropped to 1186 (weak), so it's a bit weak and fat.
Then we get another good early call. Monday morning the 24th of August is looking mint. The wind is going light and cross-offshore from the SE at just 3 mph, and the swell is back up to a chunky 8ft from the SW, 15-second period, with strong energy at 2424 (moderate). That’s prime, powerful reef-break territory.
We get a little rest bite on Tuesday morning the 25th with a smaller, glassy 5ft swell that’s perfect for a cruiser session on a longer board. Then it gets raw again. Wednesday and Thursday the 26th and 27th see the swell jack up into the 10-13ft range, but the winds are all wrong—mostly cross-on or onshore—and the energy is massive, hitting 9908 (very strong) on Wednesday afternoon. That’s a washing machine unless you’re on a tow-in sled. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than paddle surfing.
Friday the 28th is a bit cleaner for the experienced guys with 7ft swell and light cross-breeze, then a big gap of poor conditions hits over the weekend.
But the real standout, the one you want to circle on your calendar, is Monday morning, the 31st of August. That is an absolute gem forecast. We’ve got a solid 10ft SW groundswell with a very long 18-second period, and the wind is glassy, dead calm from the west. The water will be like a lake. The combined energy is 5691 (strong). That is the best morning of the whole forecast. Glassy, groundswell perfection at a reef break. It’s big, so it’s for the experts only, but conditions will be as good as it gets.
After that, the first few days of September have plenty of size, but the winds get choppy again mid-week, though Thursday morning the 3rd of September throws up another huge 13ft SW swell with a clean cross-offshore breeze. That one is massive, only for the brave. The 5th of September clears up again with a solid 8ft.
So, in summary: Friday the 21st morning is your first good one, but the absolute standout is Monday the 31st of August morning. Clean, glassy, and powerful. Get in the water.
Stay stoked.
