The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and we’ve got a solid run of swell coming through for Dongara-Port Denison. This reef break is exposed to the west, so it’s picking up a decent amount of south-west groundswell over the next couple of weeks. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year. Let’s get into it.
The first proper option swings in on Thursday the 16th. Morning’s got a 5.2ft SW swell rolling in with a 15-second period – that’s long-period groundswell, which means energy and shape. But the wind is a stiff 15.5 mph northerly cross, so it’s choppy and only marginal. Afternoon turns cross-on with the same size, and it’s actually poor. Not a standout.
Friday the 17th is a write-off. Morning has a 18.6 mph north-west cross-on with 5.2ft SW swell and a risk of thunderstorms – lumpy mess. Afternoon brings heavy rain and onshore wind. No good.
Saturday the 18th is where it gets interesting. The morning is a no-go with 9.8ft of SW swell but cross-on wind and poor conditions. But Saturday afternoon? That’s the first real standout. The swell jumps to 11.5ft from the SW with a 17-second period – that’s very long-period groundswell pumping in. The wind drops to a light 6.2 mph southerly cross, with a combined energy of 6631. That’s strong wave energy, glassy cross-shore ripples, and this reef will handle that long period beautifully. It’s a big swell, over 8ft, so this is strictly for experienced surfers. Crowds are sometimes around here, so you might have a few out, but the quality will be worth it.
Sunday the 19th is still rideable but nothing special. Morning has 8.2ft SW swell with a 15-second period and a 12.4 mph south-east cross-off, which keeps it clean. That’s a solid swell but still big for beginners. Afternoon drops to 7.5ft with a 14-second period and a gentle cross-shore breeze, but it’s only marginal.
Monday the 20th morning is a nice clean option. The swell settles to 6.2ft from the SW with a 13-second period, light 6.2 mph east-south-east cross-off wind, and a clean surface. This is excellent for experienced surfers, with a combined energy of 1210 – moderate wave energy. The water’s still average temp. Afternoon is similar but smaller at 5.9ft and a gentle cross-shore.
Tuesday the 21st is a sleeper. Morning is marginal with 4.9ft SW swell and a 14-second period, clean cross-off breeze. But Tuesday afternoon is the pick of this mid-week run – 4.9ft SW, 14-second period, light 6.2 mph south-south-east cross-off, and the forecast says expect very good surf. Clean, gentle, and user-friendly for intermediates. Combined energy is 886.
Wednesday the 22nd morning has a beauty: 5.9ft SW swell with a 13-second period, easterly 9.3 mph offshore wind, and clean conditions. This is excellent for experienced surfers. Afternoon goes cross-shore and smaller.
Thursday the 23rd morning is another standout morning. 6.2ft SW swell, 15-second period, 9.3 mph east-south-east offshore, clean as a whistle. Combined energy is 1526, and it’s excellent for experienced surfers. Afternoon is still 6.2ft but cross-shore, so less clean.
Friday the 24th morning has 4.9ft SW swell, 14-second period, and a 12.4 mph east-north-east offshore – that’s moderate offshore and clean, expect very good surf. Afternoon is 4.6ft with a cross-off, still clean.
Saturday the 25th drops off hard. Morning has 3.6ft SW swell but a 18.6 mph north-east cross-off – poor conditions. Afternoon is 3.6ft with a light breeze, expect good surf but tiny.
From here, the size stays small through the 26th and 27th. Sunday the 26th has 3.6ft SW swell with a 12-second period and messy wind. Monday the 27th has 3.3ft SW swell with a 17-second period – that’s very long period but small, and only marginal.
Tuesday the 28th morning brings a nice little pulse: 3.9ft SW swell, 14-second period, 15.5 mph easterly offshore, and expect very good surf. Clean and fun for a small day.
Wednesday the 29th afternoon is a big late highlight. 6.2ft WSW swell with an 18-second period – that’s very long period groundswell – and a gentle 9.3 mph south-east cross-off. Combined energy is
