The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, dialling in from the coast. Let’s get stuck into the next 16 days for this stretch.
We’ve got a mixed bag coming our way, but there’s a real standout session that’s got me fired up. The early part of the week is a bit of a warm-up, with the real fireworks on the 27th of July. There’s a fair bit of energy in the water, but the wind is going to be the key player.
First up, Monday the 20th. The morning at Dongara-Port Denison is looking clean with a solid 6ft SW swell and a decent 13-second period. The combined energy is moderate (1037), and with a light SE breeze keeping it cross-off, the sets will be clean. That’s the pick of the first day. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-shore wind, so morning is the call.
Tuesday the 21st is a bit of a wait. The morning is small and clean, but the afternoon picks up with a 5ft SW swell and a 14-second period. The energy is still moderate (967), and the wind is light, so it’s worth a paddle.
Wednesday the 22nd starts with a fresh 25 km/h ESE offshore wind and 6ft of SW swell. That’s a clean, offshore morning, but the energy is only moderate (961). The afternoon sees a jump in the period to 16 seconds and a big spike in energy to 1619, but the swell drops to 4ft. The long period means better shaped waves, but it’s still a moderate size.
Thursday the 23rd is a proper morning session. We’ve got 6ft of SW swell with a 14-second period, and a 30 km/h E offshore wind. The energy is strong (1505), and the waves will be clean and lined up. It’s a powerful, punchy day for experienced surfers. The afternoon is even better with the wind easing to a gentle 15 km/h offshore, keeping the 6ft swell clean.
Friday the 24th is a fade-out. The swell drops to 4ft in the morning, with moderate energy (543). The wind is cross-off, so it’s clean but small. The afternoon is better with a gentle offshore wind and 4ft swell.
Now, the weekend gets a bit sloppy. Saturday the 25th is a write-off with a fresh NNE breeze and poor conditions. Sunday the 26th is bigger but messy. A 7ft SW swell on Sunday morning, but the wind is a cross-onshore NW breeze, making it choppy. The energy is strong (1578), but the quality is poor. The afternoon is even bigger at 8ft, but with a cross-shore wind and rain showers, it’s a choppy mess.
The Standout: Monday the 27th of July.
This is the one. Morning session: 10ft of SW swell with a 15-second period. That’s a very long period groundswell, packing a huge punch with energy at 3864. The wind is a gentle 15 km/h ESE cross-off, keeping it clean. This is serious, powerful surf for experienced surfers only. The afternoon is a very close second, with 8ft of the same SW swell, even lighter winds, and energy at 3178. If you’re an expert, this is your day.
The rest of the week holds up. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th both have solid 5ft to 6ft SW swells with clean offshore winds and excellent conditions. The energy is moderate to strong, and the period is long, making for really good, consistent waves.
We then hit a bit of a lull. Thursday the 30th is small, and Friday the 31st gets blown out by a strong NE wind. The first of August is a complete washout with strong cross-shore winds and poor conditions.
The run of poor conditions continues through the 2nd of August, with messy cross-shore winds and onshore slop.
But, we’ve got a light at the end of the tunnel. Monday the 3rd of August has a solid 6ft SW swell with a 14-second period and a light offshore breeze. The energy is strong (1462), and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. Tuesday the 4th of August is also worth a look, with a 5ft SW swell, a 14-second period, and a light breeze.
So, to sum it up: the 27th of July is the big one, a monster day for the experts. The 23rd of July is also a top-tier morning. The rest of the time, pick your windows carefully. The crowds at Dongara-Port Denison can be a factor sometimes, so get there early. Stay stoked.
