The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' at Castelejo over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a bit of a rough start. The first week or so is looking pretty average, with a fresh onshore wind blowing consistently from the NNW. The swell is tiny, around 1 ft to 5 ft, and the period is short (4 to 7 seconds), so the waves will be pretty weak and messy. The combined swell energy is in the low to moderate range (33 to 156), but with that wind, it's not going to be much fun. We're talking poor surf conditions right through until the 27th of July. Don't bother paddling out for that unless you fancy a fight with the chop.
But then, hold on to your board. The outlook changes completely around the 28th of July. The wind swings around to a light offshore breeze from the ESE, and the swell starts to muscle up. We're looking at a solid groundswell from the NNW, with wave heights around 6 ft to 8 ft, and the period stretching out to a clean 8 to 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps right up – we're talking values in the 500 to 1000 range, which is serious wave energy.
The standout window is the morning of the 29th of July. The swell is a clean 7 ft from the NNW, with a period of 9 seconds and a light offshore breeze from the south. The combined energy is a massive 1021, and the conditions are described as "excellent for experienced surfers." That's a proper session for the crew who know what they're doing. The morning of the 30th of July is also a beauty, with a glassy 7 ft swell from the same direction. That's a top-tier call, but remember, 7 ft is for the experienced riders.
The end of the run into the first of August still has some size, around 6 ft to 8 ft, but the wind is back onshore, making it a bit of a gamble. For the beginner surfers, stay away from the bigger days, especially when it's over 5 ft, and the 8 ft plus days are for experts only.
Keep in mind, Castelejo is a beach and reef setup, and it's very consistent. The crowds can be a thing here sometimes, but with the conditions on offer, it's worth the company.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The real action kicks off on the 28th of July, and the 29th and 30th of July are the clear standouts. Get your skis on for those.
Rusty.
