Alright, let’s break down what we’re dealing with at Castelejo.
It’s a beach and reef spot, wide open to the north-west, and the first week is a grind – a long, empty stretch with nothing worth getting wet for. From Friday the 3rd right through the end of that first week, the surf is poor. Tiny, weak swell and the wind keeps it messy – cross-off or straight onshore. You’d be better off staying home.
The only real bright spot, and I mean the only one that’s worth talking about, is Friday morning, July 17th. It’s clean with light offshore wind from the west-northwest. The swell is small, about 3ft, coming from the WNW with a solid 11-second period, so it’s got some shape and push. The energy is moderate (319). For a place that’s been flat and blown out, this is a rare pocket of calm. It’s good for everyone, from beginners to the old salts. Just remember, it’s more than a week out, so take it with a grain of optimism.
After that, the wind goes bad again. By Saturday the 18th, the swell jumps to a messy 7-8ft with a short period (632 energy) and cross-onshore wind. That’s big, ugly, and choppy – more of a kite day than a surf day. For the experts, there will be power, but it won’t be pretty.
So, a long dry spell, then one sweet morning. That Friday the 17th is your only real window.
Rusty.
