The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's shaking for Castelejo over the next couple of weeks.
First thing you need to know – the water temperature at Castelejo is sitting at 67°F, which is a solid 4°F colder than usual for this time of year. That’s pretty noticeable, so don’t be a hero; bring the thick rubber or even a hood if you’ve got one.
Honestly, for the majority of this 16-day window, we are looking at a tough stretch. The surf is on offer but the conditions are getting in the way most days. The first few days are tiny and mostly blown out, so don't get your hopes up for Wednesday the 19th or Thursday the 20th. There's a bit of weak swell around, but the wind is just messy.
We do have a couple of moments where it might be worth a paddle. Let's look at Sunday the 23rd. We’ve got a glassy morning with no wind at all, and a little 3ft swell from the NNW with an 8-second period. The combined energy is weak at 141, so it won't be pumping, but with the wind completely calm, the surface will be like a mirror. It’s a "surfable" option, but very ordinary. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off breeze. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but if you just need to get wet, that’s your window.
Now, if you are an experienced surfer and willing to battle the wind, the end of the month and start of September sees a jump in size. On Monday the 31st of August, we see the swell building to 5ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon from the NW, with a period around 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps significantly to 387 in the morning and a strong 805 in the afternoon. The problem is, it’s accompanied by an onshore wind. Tuesday the 1st of September morning has 5ft swell from the NW (10-second period) and 522 combined energy, but again hammered by a strong cross-onshore wind.
Because the predominant breaks here are a beach-and-reef setup, and we are getting consistent onshore and cross-onshore winds with decent size, the setup honestly looks more interesting for the kite surfers than for a paddle surfer on most of these bigger days. There’s energy there, but the wind is just ruining the face for a traditional surfer.
The best call? If you are desperate, the glassy window on Sunday the 23rd of August is the only time it looks clean, even if the waves are small and weak. That’s your one true standout, but it’s a tame one. For the bigger stuff, you’d be battling the wind every time.
Rusty, signing off.
