The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' at Castelejo over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a solid block of time where the conditions just aren’t coming together. There’s a bit of swell at times, but the wind is gonna be a bastard for most of it, and the quality is just shot. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a proper 4° colder than normal, so it’s gonna feel nippy. You'll want a good thick wetsuit.
The first real chance to paddle out is on Wednesday the 19th, in the morning. We’ve got a tiny little 3ft swell out of the NNW with a period of 8 seconds (combined energy 73). That’s pretty weak, but the saving grace is a clean offshore wind from the SE. It’s gonna be small and gutless, but it’ll be clean. After that, it goes downhill fast. The afternoon shows the swell dropping to 2ft and the wind turns, so that’s your one and only small window.
From Thursday the 20th right through to the end of the month, the wind is just relentless. It swings onshore and cross-onshore from the NW and NNW, blowing 15 to 22 mph. We do see the swell picking up – a solid 8ft on Sunday the 23rd with moderate energy (814), and that’s actually a fair bit of size – definitely too big for beginners. But with that strong onshore wind, it’s gonna be a messy, choppy, blown-out mess. Not worth paddling for. That kind of setup with a strong cross-shore and a beach-and-reef break might be more interesting for a kite surfer than a surfer.
We get a tiny drop in wind on Wednesday the 27th, but the swell is 6ft with strong NW winds again, still lumpy. There’s another pulse of energy on Saturday the 29th (combined 489) with a 5ft NW swell and a longer 10-second period, but once again, that fresh cross-onshore wind kills it. A long period groundswell like that would be better at a point or reef, but Castelejo just isn't catching a break with the wind.
So, the bottom line is: there’s one clean, tiny window on Wednesday the 19th morning for some longboard fun in clean conditions. Everything else is a write-off due to wind. It’s a long, bleak run on the horizon, but that’s the coast for ya. It won't stay poor forever.
Rusty.
