The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Castelejo.
Look, I’m gonna be honest with you, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a real rough patch to kick things off with a lot of onshore wind messing up the waves. The water temperature is sitting around 70°, which is pretty much bang on normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
The first proper opportunity we get is a bit of a wait. From Saturday the 18th of July right through to the end of the month, the wind is mostly coming from the NNW, which is cross-on or onshore here. That means lumpy, choppy, and generally poor surf conditions. The swell is small, around 2ft to 4ft, and the period is short, around 4 to 6 seconds, so not much push. The combined energy barely gets into triple digits, topping out at 96 (weak energy), so it’s a real struggle.
Then, around the 27th and 28th of July, we start to see the swell pick up. It gets bigger, hitting 6ft to 7ft, and the period stretches to 7 to 9 seconds. The combined energy gets strong, hitting 609 to 711 (moderate to strong wave energy). But here’s the rub – the wind is still howling from the NNW, often at 18 to 28 mph, making it cross-on and messy. On the 28th afternoon, it’s a solid 7ft with 9-second period, but with that onshore blow, it’s going to be a washing machine. Honestly, for a beach-and-reef setup like this, with those strong winds and significant swell, it might actually be more interesting for the kite surfers than the paddle crew.
Now, the standout. Keep your eyes on the morning of Thursday, July 30th. This is the one. The wind swings around to the ENE, and it’s barely a whisper at 3 mph. That’s a cross-offshore breeze, folks. That means clean, glassy waves. The swell is a solid 6ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a powerful 503 (strong wave energy). This is the best on offer by a long shot. The water temp is still about average, and the crowd can be a factor here sometimes, but with conditions this good, it’ll be worth the paddle battle. The 6ft is a bit chunky for beginners, but it’s a proper shortboard wave for the rest of us.
After that, the wind goes back onshore on the 31st of July and into the first of August, with the swell dropping away again into the 4ft range. It’s a short window, but that Thursday morning is the call.
Rusty.
