The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the Castelejo region.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We're looking at a real dry spell from now through to the end of July. The wind is howling out of the north and north-northwest, mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and it's just tearing up the surface. The swell is there, but it's small, weak, and the energy is totally scattered. You'll see numbers like 52 to 125 for the combined energy, which is just weak sauce. For a beach and reef setup like Castelejo, it's a no-go. The water temp is about average for this time of year, but you won't be in the water anyway.
We're looking at a gap of about 8 days with nothing worth paddling out for. The first real glimmer of hope doesn't show up until Tuesday, the 28th of July.
Now, Tuesday the 28th is where it starts to get interesting. The wind swings around to an east-northeast cross-offshore in the morning, and the swell jumps to 7ft from the NNW. The combined energy hits 387 – that's moderate but significant. The afternoon gets even better, with a 8ft NW swell and a light south-southwest breeze keeping it clean. That's a solid session.
But the real standout, the one you circle on your calendar, is Wednesday, the 29th of July. This is the best on offer. Early morning we've got a 8ft swell from the NW with a period of 10 seconds, and a light east-southeast cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is a massive 1363, which is strong. The afternoon is just as good – 8ft from the NNW, same 10-second period, wind from the south. This is proper groundswell energy, and with that light offshore wind, the waves at Castelejo are going to be clean and powerful. This is not for beginners – 8ft is expert territory, and with that much energy, you need to know what you're doing. For the experienced crew, this is the day.
Thursday the 30th is still got some life, but it's a step down. The morning has a 7ft swell from the NNW, but a fresh 30 km/h east-southeast wind makes it a bit tricky. The afternoon cleans up nicely with a 6ft swell and a gentle breeze, giving you a combined energy of 530. It's a good option, but not the peak.
After that, the wind shifts back onshore from the 31st onward, and the swell drops off again. The surf gets messy and small, and we're back to the waiting game.
So, to sum it up: you've got a long wait, but Wednesday the 29th is the absolute standout. Get it while it's good.
Rusty.
