The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking for Castelejo over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this is a grim stretch. The forecast is showing a long, bleak run of poor surf conditions, with almost nothing worth paddling out for. The first real session that might be worth a look isn't until Sunday, August 23rd, and even then it's marginal.
The opening days are a write-off. Saturday, August 22nd is a total dud with weak, cross-onshore winds and tiny, messy waves. The water is sitting at 68°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent suit.
Then we get a slight glimmer. Sunday, August 23rd is the only window that stands out across the whole outlook. The morning brings a clean, cross-offshore wind from the south at 16 mph, wrapping around a 7 ft swell from the WNW with a long 12-second period. The combined energy is pumping at (1152), which is strong. This is a proper groundswell, and with that long period, it’ll be better shaped and have more push, but at a beach-and-reef setup like Castelejo, it can break a bit straight. The afternoon continues with a similar 7 ft swell from the west, still clean. If you’re going to pick one day, this is it. The surf is a bit much for beginners though, bordering on too big for the inexperienced.
Monday, August 24th takes a turn for the worse. The wind swings to a strong cross-shore, and the swell drops in quality, turning into lumpy, choppy mess. The rest of the week is a sad story: persistent cross-onshore winds, periods dropping into the 7 to 8 second range, and wave energy hovering in the low to moderate hundreds. It’s basically blown-out, short-period slop. For a few days in late August and early September, the wind picks up to strong breeze, making it outright messy. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The gap in decent surf is huge. After Sunday, August 23rd, there’s literally nothing else worth recommending for the entire 16-day window. The conditions just stay poor, with lumpy, cross-onshore winds and weak, short-period swell. It’s a tough run for a spot that’s usually very consistent, but sometimes the ocean just shuts down.
Keep your eyes on the charts, but for now, don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
