The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and let’s talk Castelejo. It’s a beach and reef set-up, wide open to the north-west, and it breaks pretty much all the time. The water’s about 68°F, which is a tad cooler than usual for this time of year – nothing dramatic, just a bit of a nip.
The first few days are a bit of a bust for a good surf. Saturday the 22nd, there’s a 3ft swell from the NNW, but that 9 mph cross-on wind from the west is making a mess of it. The energy is weak (274), and it’s just poor. Sunday the 23rd is the real highlight. The swell jumps to 7ft from the WNW with a 12-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The wind is cross-off from the south, so it’ll be clean, but there’s a “marginal” note for tide. Still, that’s the best of the first week. The combined energy is strong (1152), so there’s plenty of push. Sunday morning is your window.
Monday the 24th drops to 7ft from the west, but the cross-shore wind and short period (8-9 seconds) make it lumpy. The rest of the week is a bit of a letdown. Tuesday the 25th starts with a lovely 5ft swell from the WNW and glassy conditions – a 3 mph wind, dead flat water. The energy is moderate (220). That Tuesday morning session is the other standout. From Wednesday on, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions. The swell hangs around 3ft to 6ft, but the wind is always cross-on or onshore, mostly from the north or NNW, and it’s blowing 12 to 19 mph. The energy varies from weak (54) to strong (1195), but the wind kills it. Friday the 28th afternoon has a 6ft swell from the NW with a 10-second period and a strong 19 mph onshore wind – that’s more for the kite guys than the paddle crew.
The first week of September is a real drag. There’s a gap of several days with no real good options. The swell stays small, between 2ft and 5ft, and the wind is relentless – cross-on or onshore, often a fresh breeze. The only thing that catches the eye is the last entry, Sunday the 6th of September. It’s a tiny 2ft swell from the NW, but with a 12-second period (groundswell) and a moderate onshore wind. The combined energy is moderate (216). It’s a long shot, but that long period might make the reef work. For the best of the fortnight, it’s Sunday the 23rd of August morning for the size and the groundswell, and Tuesday the 25th of August morning for the glassy conditions. The rest is a no-go.
