Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the coming stretch.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough run of forecasts for Castelejo. The charts are showing something, but the quality just isn't there for a proper paddle session for most of the next two weeks. There's a real gap here. From now until around the 11th of July, it's pretty grim. The waves are either tiny or blown out. You’ll see some small lines on the 4th of July – Saturday afternoon actually goes glassy with a 0.7m swell from the NNW, but the energy is weak (137). It's surfable, but it's not going to get the heart racing. That's about as good as the first week gets, and that's saying something. The wind is just never our friend, mostly blowing onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is short-period, mushy stuff. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so at least you won't freeze waiting for a set.
The pattern stays poor for days. On the 11th and 12th, the wind really starts to howl – we're looking at strong breezes up to 25 mph from the NNW. The swell does pick up a bit, but it's messy, short-period windswell. Look at the 12th of July, Sunday afternoon: we've got a 1.5m swell from the NW with a combined energy of 374 (moderate), but it's pinned by a 25 mph onshore wind. That's not surfing, that's survival. It's a beach and reef setup, so honestly, at that point it looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddler.
Then from the 14th of July onwards, the swell drops again, the period stretches out to 11 seconds, which can be nice, but the wind is still a problem – mostly onshore. There's a real lack of that magic moment where the wind lines up with any decent swell. The whole outlook is a long, flat, or blown-out run. There are no standout days, no hidden gems here. It's just one of those spells where the ocean is telling us to clean the wax off our boards and wait.
So, my honest call for Castelejo for this entire 16-day window is to find something else to do. It's a blank run, and for this area, that can happen. It tends not to stay poor forever, but this stretch is a write-off.
Rusty.
