The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the forecast for Castelejo, a beach and reef setup that’s exposed to the NW swell. Honestly, it’s a rough start with no real surf to get excited about for the first ten days. The wind is a constant problem, blowing from the NNW at 15 to 25 mph, cross-on or onshore, making a mess of things. The swell is small, mostly under 3 ft, weak period of 5 seconds, and the combined energy is weak, in the 50s and 60s. It’s all poor surf conditions, chop and lump. Not worth paddling out.
The first real flicker of hope comes on Wednesday, July 30th. The morning will still be tricky with a strong offshore from the ESE at 25 mph, which cleans things up but makes it hard to paddle into the 3 ft NW swell. The afternoon is where it’s at – a moderate offshore breeze from the SE at 15 mph, clean conditions, and the swell is 3 ft from the NNW with a 10-second period. The combined energy is moderate (260). This is a window for a few clean lines, but the size is small.
Then Friday, August 1st looks like the standout. The morning is glassy – literally a slight air from the ENE at 3 mph. The water temp is about 69°F, which is normal for the time of year. The swell is 2 ft from the NW, period of 10 seconds, and the energy is moderate (108). The wind will be offshore and glassy, meaning the waves will be clean and peeling. The break is very consistent, so you won’t be waiting forever. The swell direction (NW) matches the optimum (NW) perfectly. Crowds are possible here, so don’t expect it to be empty. This is your best bet for a decent session.
After that, it drops off again. The weekend brings tiny 1.0 ft to 2 ft swells with periods between 8 and 12 seconds, but the wind turns onshore or cross-on, so it’s back to poor conditions. The long period groundswell (12 seconds) on August 2nd is interesting, but it’s only 1.0 ft, so it’s really a non-event for a beach and reef setup. The energy is weak (82-100). The whole second week is a write-off.
So, to sum it up: the first ten days are a washout. Your best shot is the afternoon of July 30th for a clean, small wave, but the real winner is the morning of August 1st with that glassy offshore wind and a clean little groundswell. Get out there if you can, but don’t expect much else.
Rusty.
