The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the ocean has in store for us over this 16-day stretch. It’s a bit of a strange one, so bear with me.
The first week or so is looking pretty bleak, if I'm being honest. We've got a lot of onshore and cross-onshore winds, which is going to chop things up and make for some pretty ugly conditions. The swell is there, but it's not doing us any favors with the wind. You’ll see a lot of days where the surf report just says "poor" and that's because it is. It's not worth paddling out for that mess.
The one bright spot in this whole window is a morning that stands out from the crowd. On Sunday, the 23rd of August, things are looking like they might actually line up. We’ve got a bump in swell to 7ft, coming from the WNW, which is right in the zone for Castelejo. Better yet, the wind is swinging around to a cross-offshore from the south, cleaning up the face. The energy is going to be strong, with a combined energy reading of 1213, and the period is a solid 12 seconds. This is a proper groundswell. It's a bit of a standout, and the only real chance we get for a decent wave. The water temp is 68°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so maybe grab a slightly thicker suit or a bootie.
Now, a word of caution on that Sunday morning. It's a long way out, so don't book your flights just yet. Long-range calls are always a bit less certain. But it's the one day that has all the ingredients: size, direction, and favorable wind. If it holds, it could be a fun one.
After that, the wind is set to go back to the north and northwest, and it's back to the choppy, cross-onshore stuff. It's a grind. We're talking a solid week of poor conditions from the 24th through the 31st of August, and the size drops off a bit. It's just not worth the paddle.
Into the first week of September, the pattern doesn't really change. The wind is still coming from the north, and the surf stays mediocre. There is a slight bump in size on the 4th and 5th of September, but it's still looking like a wind-blown mess. The energy will be there, but the quality won't be.
So, if you’re keen, your best bet is to keep an eye on that Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. It's the only real standout in the whole 16 days. Otherwise, maybe dust off the kiteboard, because with this kind of wind and chop, that’s looking more interesting than a surfboard for most of this period.
Rusty out.
