The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this straight: the next 16 days are looking grim for a proper paddle. I’ve been staring at the charts for Cap Frehel, and honestly, I’m struggling to find you a single window that’s worth suiting up for. We’re talking a full 16-day dry spell here.
The water temperature is a real standout though – sitting at 68°F with a whopping 5°F anomaly above normal. It's much warmer than usual for this time of year, so if you do decide to just float around on a board, at least you won't freeze.
We’ve got a few small pulses of energy, but the wind is nearly always onshore, cross-onshore, or just plain messy. The swell direction is almost never from the optimum W direction you’d want for this reef. The strongest energy we see is on the 27th of July, Monday morning, with a combined energy of 240 (moderate wave energy) and a 3ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is directly onshore from the WNW at 16 mph. That’s not surfable; that’s a washing machine. The 29th of July, Wednesday morning, sees a 4ft WNW swell with 205 energy, but again, cross-onshore wind from the WSW at 16 mph ruins it.
The few times the wind goes clean or cross-off, the swell drops to nothing – like 0.3ft to 0.7ft. We’ve got a couple of long-period signals (11-12 seconds) on the 26th and 27th, but that’s all onshore wind and waves that’ll just close out.
If you’re a kitesurfer, you might find something in the stronger afternoon breezes, especially on the 21st July with a 4ft NNE swell and 22 mph winds, or the 27th July with onshore wind and a moderate energy swell. But for a surfboard? Honestly, there’s nothing here. It’s a blank run from the 14th of July all the way through the 29th. For this area, a stretch like this, while painful, isn't totally abnormal. Forecasts can change, but right now, I'd leave the board at home.
