The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks at Cap Frehel are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle session. We’ve got a long dry spell of poor surf conditions ahead, so don't be in a rush to wax up.

The pattern starts now and it’s a tough one. From Friday 21st August right through to Sunday 30th August, it’s a big fat zero. That’s over a week of almost nothing rideable. The swell is tiny, often under 2ft, and when it does show a pulse, the wind is on it. The water is sitting at 68°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only nice thing I can say. We’ve got a mix of cross-on and onshore winds from the NNW and NNE, with speeds up to 22 mph, just tearing the place up. The combined wave energy is weak, often in the double digits (76), and that’s just not gonna cut it.

There’s a tiny flicker of hope on Monday 31st August morning. We see a 3ft swell from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy finally climbs to a moderate 147. The wind is light from the SSW, so it’s clean. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. The break is a reef, so it’s a bit more critical, but the quality isn’t there to get excited about. The crowds are always here, so you’ll have company for the scraps.

The real standout, if you can call it that, is shaping up for Thursday 3rd September morning. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the W, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 206, so there’s some push. The wind is glassy – zero from the SW. That’s a major positive for clean conditions. But the swell period is short, so it’ll be a bit fat and won’t have that groundswell punch. For a reef break, that’s a bit of a letdown. This is still only a “good” option, not a classic. The afternoon that same day jumps to 8ft from the WNW, but the cross-on wind from the NNW ruins it, making it lumpy and messy. That size is also getting into expert-only territory.

Honestly, the best bet is that Thursday 3rd September morning. It’s the only window where the numbers line up for a clean, surfable wave. For the rest of the run, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
