The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, using feet and inches for you. Let’s be straight: the next 16 days are looking real quiet for Cap Frehel. I’ve gone through the forecast, and honestly, there’s not a single session I’d paddle out for. The swell stays tiny, the wind is messy, and the whole period is a write-off for surf. We’re looking at 16 days straight with no real surf on offer, so don’t hold your breath.
The first weak pulse comes in on Sunday morning, 19th July, but it’s really just a 3ft swell from the NE with a short 4-second period – that’s windswill, not a wave. The combined energy is only 30, so there’s nothing behind it. The wind is clean (cross-off from the NE at 16 mph), but no swell to work with. By Sunday afternoon, it gets a little bigger at 4ft from the NNE, but the wind swings onshore, making it choppy and lumpy. Not worth a paddle.
The rest of the run is a mix of 0.3ft to 1ft junk, with onshore or cross-shore winds that just ruin any chance of a clean wave. The 20th of July Monday morning has a sneaky 0.3ft long-period groundswell (12 seconds) from the W, but the combined energy is a pathetic 6, and the wind is clean, but there’s no push. It’s a tease.
The water temperature on the 17th is 67°F, which is 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a lot warmer than usual. But with no surf, it’s just a warm bath.
Look, the only glimmer in the whole 16-day window is Sunday morning, 19th July, but it’s not a “standout” by any stretch. If you’re desperate, you might find a knee-high wave, but it’s flat and weak. For a break that’s a reef, it needs more guts.
For now, I’d say leave the board in the car. The trend is for these small, poor conditions, so it’s not looking up anytime soon. Forecasts can change, but this stretch is locked in quiet.
Rusty.
