Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cap Frehel over the next 16 days.
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Cap Frehel over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you, this stretch is looking pretty bleak. We’ve got a solid run of small, messy surf and poor conditions that runs right through most of the forecast period. The first real recommendation doesn't come up for quite a while, so we’re looking at a long gap of flat, choppy days for the most part.
Through the first week, the swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft from the WNW, but the wind is all wrong. It’s cross-onshore from the north or northeast pretty much the whole time, making it lumpy and uninviting. The combined energy is weak, barely registering above 40. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Friday the 10th where it turns cross-offshore and clean, but the swell is still pitiful at about 1ft. Not worth paddling out for.
Come Saturday the 11th, the swell tries to push up a bit, hitting about 3ft in the morning and then about 6ft by the afternoon from the NNE, but the period is a pathetic 4 to 5 seconds—just short-period wind slop. The wind is howling cross-shore, too, with speeds up to 22 mph making it a messy, choppy mess. For a reef break like this, short-period, weak swell is a real letdown. With the size getting over 5ft for the afternoon, it’d be too much for beginners, but the quality is so poor it’s not even that appealing for intermediates.
The only possible standout, and I mean that loosely, is towards the very end of the period. On Sunday the 19th, the afternoon goes glassy—wind drops to just 3 mph from the south, absolutely flat calm. The swell, however, is only about 0.7ft from the WNW. You might get a tiny, clean little wave, but it’s more of a chance to sit on the board and enjoy the stillness than anything resembling a proper surf. The water is sitting at a relatively warm 65°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, almost a notch above average.
Honestly, this reef doesn’t get a single session worth getting excited about. The combined swell energy never breaks into the moderate range for the whole period. For the most part, the coast is seeing cross-onshore wind and tiny, weak swell, which suits kite gear way better than a surfboard.
