The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be real. If you’re looking at Cap Frehel (Cap-Frehel) over the next couple of weeks, you’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch for surf. Nearly every single day through the entire 16-day window is marked as poor surf conditions. There’s no standout session, no hidden gem, not even a short-lived pulse that’s worth paddling out for. The swell energy is weak to moderate at best – the highest we see is around 266 (moderate wave energy) on the morning of Thursday 27 August, but even then the conditions are let down by fresh onshore or cross-onshore winds and short-period, crumbly swell.
The water temperature sits at 68° on Tuesday 18 August, which is 4° warmer than the long-term average – that’s notably warmer than usual for the time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in a shorty if you do happen to get wet, but let’s be real: the surf is not worth it.
For the first week, the swell is consistently small and weak – 3 ft or less, with periods under 10 seconds, mostly blown out by fresh breezes. The best of the wind appears around Saturday 23 August morning with a cross-offshore breeze from the ENE and clean conditions, but the swell is a pathetic 3 ft from the NE with a period of only 4 seconds – no energy, no shape. That’s not surf, that’s a lake with a ripple.
The middle of the second week, Thursday 27 August, shows a slight bump: 4 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore from the south, keeping it clean. The combined energy reaches 266 (moderate) – about the best we see in the whole window. But the catch: the swell direction is optimum from the west, and this is coming from the WNW, so it’s not hitting the break perfectly. Still, it’s the cleanest and most substantial window across the entire 16 days. If you’re desperate, that’s your best shot, but it’s not a day worth getting excited about.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak, and messy. Friday 28 August afternoon sees 6 ft from the west, but with a period of only 5 seconds and a moderate cross-onshore breeze – that’s pure windswell, lumpy and choppy, likely more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing at this beach-and-reef setup.
The rest of the run into early September is a mix of strong winds, onshore flow, and small swell, with no solid surf on offer. The last few days of August and into September show the same pattern: weak energy, short periods, and poor conditions.
Let’s be straight: there’s nothing here. No standouts, no worthwhile sessions. If you’re in the area, don’t pack your board. This is a blank run, and it’s not unusual for the area when conditions line up like this.
Rusty.
