The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next two weeks at Cap Frehel are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle session. The forecast is a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with the only real flicker of hope coming at the very end of the run. We’ve got a gap of about ten days from now with nothing worth getting excited about, so don’t bother waxing up just yet.
The first real chance of something surfable shows up on the morning of Monday, August 31st. The swell builds to 5ft from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined wave energy is a decent 581 – a moderate pulse of energy, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The wind is cross-shore, which keeps it lumpy, and the water is sitting at a notable 68°F, which is a solid 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’ll feel like a warm bath. The break is a reef, so that longer 11-second period might actually help shape it up a bit, but the cross-shore wind will keep it from being truly clean. It’s a shame, because there’s a bit of energy there, but the conditions are just marginal.
The only other session that might be worth a look is the Tuesday, September 1st morning. The swell drops to 3ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, and the energy is down to 120. The big positive here is the wind: a light 6 mph offshore from the SE, which will make the surface glassy and clean. The waves will be small and weak, but if you’re desperate for a clean line on a longboard, this is your best bet. The reef will handle that short period okay, but don’t expect any power.
Honestly, the standout moment in this whole 16-day window is that Tuesday morning, September 1st. The offshore wind is the key – it’s the only time we get that clean, glassy surface. The swell is tiny, but the quality will be there for a quiet, soulful session. Don’t expect any fireworks, and the reef means it’s for intermediate crew, but for a few clean waves, that’s your moment. The rest of the time, the wind is just too strong and onshore, or the swell is too small to bother with. A tough forecast, lads.
Rusty.
