The Lowdown
Right then, folks. Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Cap Frehel’s got cookin’ over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you from the off – this isn’t looking like a run of classic waves. We’ve got a long stretch of small, messy surf and tricky wind, so keep the expectations in check. The water temp is sitting at a balmy 69°, which is a notable 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – feels more like a summer swim than a winter's grind.
The first real chance of something half-decent isn’t until Tuesday, August 25th. Before that, the surf is mostly non-existent or blown out. From the 18th right through to the 24th, it’s a grim scene: tiny waves, onshore winds, and a whole lot of chop. Even the bigger energy days on the 20th, with a combined energy of 238, were completely ruined by a fresh cross-onshore breeze. A real write-off.
So, Tuesday the 25th afternoon is where we finally see a glimmer. The swell bumps up to 1 ft from the WNW, and the real saviour is the light cross-offshore breeze cleaning it right up. Combined energy is low at 47, but for a tiny wave, it’ll be the cleanest thing you’ve seen in days. It is "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," – don't expect barrels, just a little grovel board action.
The next big window is Sunday, August 30th. The morning brings a cleaner 3 ft from the WNW with a gentle cross-offshore breeze. The energy hits a moderate 138, so there’s a bit more push. This is the pick of the early bunch.
But the real standout – and I mean the only one worth circling on the calendar – is the start of September. Tuesday the 1st is promising. We’ve got 4 ft of WNW groundswell with a solid 10-second period and a fresh cross-offshore wind. Combined energy is a strong 257. This is the type of swell that’ll actually start to show some shape on the outer reef sections, and the clean wind makes it the only true highlight. Wednesday the 2nd holds similar energy at 216, though the rain and a shift to a NNW onshore wind might chop it up a bit.
To sum it up: the next 10 days are mostly for the dog walkers. Tuesday, August 25th afternoon for a clean micro-wave, Sunday, August 30th morning for a bit more push, but the best bet by a long shot is Tuesday, September 1st. That’s the one that could actually be worth a paddle out.
Rusty.
