The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it’s a lean stretch. We’ve got a patch of nothing much at all before we start seeing some life creep in around the start of September. The first real glimmer of something rideable doesn’t show up for a good while, so don’t be rushing to pack the boards just yet.
We kick off with a long, flat spell. From Thursday the 20th of August right through to the 4th of September, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell energy is weak, waves are tiny, and the winds are all over the shop. Most of the time you’re looking at cross-shore or onshore breezes kicking up chop, or just flat calm with no push. There’s a brief moment on Saturday the 22nd with clean conditions, but the swell is a paltry 2 ft, so it’s barely a ripple. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is about 4° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s notably warm, almost like a late summer treat, but there’s no surf to enjoy it with.
The only spot on the radar for this whole region is Cap Frehel, a reef break that’s fairly consistent but always packed. It’s exposed to the west, and its optimum swell is from the W. Over this period, the swell comes mostly from the WNW or NW, so that’s not a perfect match, and the direction we get is often not getting the best out of the setup.
Now, the one day that does stand out, and I mean the *only* one, is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. We finally get a pulse of energy. The combined swell energy jumps to a moderate 228, with a chest-high 5 ft swell from the NW, riding a 7 second period. It’s not the best period for shape, but the wind is a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the ENE, which will leave the surface glassy and clean. This is a small window for the dedicated surfer who’s been waiting. It’s still a reef, so you’ll want your wits about you, and expect the usual crowd. It’s not perfect, size-wise it might be just a touch big for a total beginner, but it’s the only show in town. The afternoon of that same day sees the swell drop a bit and the wind shift cross-shore, chopping it up, so that morning session on the 4th is your one and only shot.
Bottom line: two weeks of mostly nothing, then a single promising but short-lived window. If you’re desperate, pencil in the morning of Friday the 4th of September at Cap Frehel – it’s the best of a very quiet bunch.
Rusty.
