The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s in store for Cap Frehel.
Honestly, mate, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch is a bit of a tough watch. We’ve got a whole heap of days with tiny swell and messy wind, and nothing really lining up for a proper session. There’s a big gap at the start with practically no surf to speak of, and it’s not until we get well into the second week that anything even starts to look possible.
From now until early September, it’s flat and poor. We’re looking at ankle-to-knee-high dribble, mostly from the NW, but with periods so short you’d be bouncing all over the place. The water temperature at the start is sitting at 20°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a proper summer treat, but wasted on these conditions. Winds are all over the shop, mostly cross or cross-off, but the swell just isn’t there. The combined energy is barely a whisper, mostly single digits (3 to 34), so there’s no power to work with.
Then we hit the 28th of August into the 29th, and the swell finally shows up, but it’s not doing us any favours. On the 29th, the morning swell jumps to 7ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy hits 878 – that’s proper power. But the wind is cross-onshore from the WSW at 30 km/h, making it lumpy and blown out. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s not going to be pretty. The afternoon eases to 6ft but the wind picks up to 40 km/h, so it’s still messy.
The only real window that might tempt you is on Sunday the 6th of September. We’ve got a 5ft to 6ft WNW swell running, period at 10 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (500 to 573). The wind is moderate cross-shore to light cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the most promising call of the whole run. The guidance gives it a “marginal” nod, which is the best we see all forecast. If you’re itching, that’s your best shot. But remember – that’s a week away, so keep an eye on it.
Other than that, it’s a lot of waiting. The break itself is a reef, exposed to the W, and it’s always crowded here. Even when the swell’s decent, you’ll have company. For now, though, the crowds aren’t the problem – the lack of surf is.
Stay patient, lads.
