Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cap Frehel over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on offer for Cap Frehel.
To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are pretty grim. We’re looking at a solid run of poor surf conditions that stretches from now all the way through to Wednesday, July 16th. A real flat spell with messy winds.
The first glimmer of anything even surfable comes on Thursday, July 16th. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 66°F, which is a nice 4°F above average. Thursday morning and afternoon we finally see a tiny bit of potential with a cross-offshore wind and clean conditions. There’s a 3ft swell from the NNE, with a short period of 4 seconds and only weak energy (combined energy of all swells directed here sits at 44). The wave comment calls it "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," and I have to agree. It’s not going to be any kind of standout, just a chance to get wet if you’re desperate.
After that, it dries right up again. Friday, July 17th and Saturday, July 18th are back to poor conditions.
The only other period that might get your attention is on the distant horizon. Sunday, July 19th sees a spike in swell height to 5ft from the NW, with a period of 6 seconds and moderate energy (combined energy of all swells directed here is 153). However, the wind is cross-onshore and light, so it’ll be rippled and choppy. The wave comment is "poor surf conditions." Not worth the drive.
Looking further out to Thursday, July 23rd, we might see the best conditions of the entire outlook. The swell drops to just 2ft from the NW with a period of 5 seconds and weak energy (combined energy of all swells directed here is 12). The real story here is the wind: it goes glassy (0 mph) in the afternoon. That makes for a clean, mirror-like surface. But with a swell that small, it’s barely a ripple.
I can’t point to any one standout here. The best on offer is probably the afternoon of Thursday, July 16th for a clean but tiny wave, or the afternoon of Thursday, July 23rd for a glassy but even smaller wave. Neither is going to set the world on fire. This reef break is always crowded, so even if a few waves roll through, expect company. The break is exposed to the west and the optimum swell direction is from the west, so anything with west in the direction is your best bet.
Forget the kite. With no real swell and messy onshore winds for most of the period, even kite surfers will struggle to find a window.
Stay patient, check back with me later.
Rusty.
