The Lowdown
Alright, let’s cut to the chase for Canto de Sarney. The first week and a half is a total bust. The wind is hammering onshore from the SSE or SE at 12 to 15 mph, and the swell is a short-period, lumpy mess. Not worth getting wet. The water’s about 80°, which is normal for this time of year.
We get a solid 8 feet of swell on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, but with that onshore wind and a period of only 8 seconds, it’s just blown-out, crumbly junk. The combined wave energy is moderate to strong, but it’s all wasted. For a beginner spot, that’s way too big and messy. From the 16th through the 25th, forget it.
The first real hope is Wednesday the 29th morning. It’s glassy with a light SSW wind at 3 mph. Swell is a clean 4 feet from the south at 11 seconds – proper groundswell. The energy is moderate. That’s a fun, clean wave for a mellow session. Just be aware that these long-period southern swells can be a bit straight for a beach break, but with glassy conditions, it’s your best bet.
Thursday the 30th morning is also decent – glassy again, 4 feet from the SE at 10 seconds. Not a standout, but a good paddle. Crowds can show up sometimes, so get in early.
After that, it drops into tiny, weak waves. There’s a 4-foot spike on Monday the 27th with a very long 15-second period from the south, but the wind is onshore, and the energy is strong. It’ll be blown out and only for the hardcore.
So, the only real windows are the mornings of the 29th and 30th. Everything else is a no-go. It’s a long dry spell, but that’s the way it can be. Forecasts can change, so keep your ear to the ground.
