The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Bayfield over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell of flat or near-flat conditions with nothing but poor surf quality for day after day. The first real chance to even paddle out comes on Saturday, July 18th, but even then it’s not much to write home about.
We’ve got a tiny bump of swell on Saturday morning, maybe 4ft from the SW with a short period of 5 seconds – that’s weak, windswell stuff. The combined energy is only 59, so it’s barely pushing. The wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be pretty. Saturday afternoon is a little better: still a small 4ft from the WNW, but the wind swings cross-offshore, which cleans things up. The energy creeps up to 86, but it’s still weak. Surfable, but very ordinary. That’s the best we get all period.
After that, it’s a sad story. Sunday the 19th morning is flat, and the afternoon brings a tiny 1ft, 3-second wind bump with a cross-shore chop. From Monday the 20th right through to the end of the month, the combined energy is either zero or in the single digits. We’re talking 0.3ft, 1ft – just ripples. The wind is mostly onshore, cross-on, or fresh cross-shore; it’s all junk. There’s a glassy morning on Friday, July 17th, but no swell at all.
Bayfield is a beach/jetty setup, and it’s rated for advanced surfers, but even they won’t find anything here. The water is a crazy warm 75°F – that’s 12°F warmer than normal for this time of year, which is really unusual. But with no waves, it doesn’t matter much.
Look, if you’re desperate, Saturday afternoon, July 18th, is the only window. It’s small, clean-ish, and you might get a knee-high wave. But honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for the rest of the run. The crowds are sometimes a problem at Bayfield, but they won’t be this week.
Hang in there. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a flat spell.
Rusty.
