The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week or so is a bit of a write-off for a decent paddle. We’ve got some energy coming in, but the wind just won’t play ball. The water is sitting at 68°F which is a bit colder than you’d expect for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wettie.
The first real chance of a surf comes on Saturday, 18 July at Anne Street Reef. The morning is still a mess with a fresh breeze and a cross-off wind, but it’s clean. The swell is a chunky 7ft from the SE. The real standout is the Saturday afternoon. The swell jumps to 10ft from the SE with a solid 10-second period, giving the wave some proper energy (combined energy of all swells here is 1982). That’s a lot of power. Unfortunately, the forecast says it’s too big for this break. That’s a shame because the wind is cross-off and the waves will be clean. This is strictly for experts only, and even then, it’s pushing it for a reef. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so be ready for that if you’re mad enough to give it a go.
Monday, 20 July, is another day with huge swell – 13ft from the ESE early, dropping to 12ft in the afternoon, with a long 11-second period. It’s a groundswell, and on a reef that’s a proper setup for a big, powerful wave. But again, it’s flagged as too big for the break. The wind is a cross-shore, so it’s lumpy, but if you’re a top-tier charger, this is the biggest and most powerful window we’ve got.
After that, the swell drops away steadily. The wind cleans up nicely on the morning of Thursday, 23 July – a light S breeze, cross-off, with 5ft of clean, small surf from the E. It’s only a score of 2 out of 10 for quality, but it’s the first real ‘good surf conditions’ call in the run. The same goes for Friday, 24 July morning: light breeze, 5ft from the ENE, clean. These are small, friendly waves for a beginner, and the reef is made for that level.
The long-range hope is Tuesday, 28 July morning. The wind is light from the SSW, cross-off, the waves are 6ft from the ESE, and the forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” The energy is moderate (507). It’s the cleanest call of the whole run, but it’s nine days out, so keep an eye on it. Crowds are sometimes expected here, so get in early.
So, to wrap it up: the best wave on offer is Saturday afternoon, 18 July if you’re a fearless expert and can handle a 10ft reef that might be too big. For the rest of us, the Thursday 23 and Friday 24 mornings are your go-to for a clean, small, beginner-friendly paddle. The long-range Tuesday 28 July morning is the one to watch for a proper clean session, but it’s a long way off.
Rusty.
