The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, looking at the 16-day outlook for Anne Street Reef. The pattern is a bit of a bummer for most of the run, with a lot of poor surf conditions and messy winds. The first real sign of life hangs on the horizon for Thursday the 23rd of July, and there's a whisper of something on the very last day.
First up, the early part of the week is a write-off. Through Friday the 17th and into the weekend, we've got a strong cross-shore wind and lumpy, rainy conditions. The swell is there, but it's junk. The combined wave energy hits a solid 316 on Friday morning, but the wind just ruins it. It stays pretty average right through until Wednesday the 22nd, with a constant cross-onshore wind and moderate energy levels.
Thursday the 23rd of July is the standout. The morning is pure gold. We've got a glassy surface with a slight air, and 4ft of swell from the east at a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is a moderate 225. It's a beginner-friendly reef, and with the optimum direction being ESE, that east swell is right in the slot. The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is the one to circle. The afternoon gets a bit ordinary with an onshore wind, so get in the water early.
The following week is a letdown. The glassy conditions are gone, replaced by fresh cross-offshore and cross-shore winds. The swell drops off, and the energy falls away. Late on the 31st of July, there's a brief moment of glassy conditions with 4ft of surf, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it'll be a bit fat and weak. The combined energy is only 91. It's surfable, but it's not going to get the heart pumping.
Then on the 1st of August, we get a moderate offshore wind from the WSW, cleaning up a 3ft wave. The period is still short, and the energy is weak at 70, but it's clean. It's a surfable option, but nothing to get excited about. The rest of the window is a string of poor surf days with very little energy. For a spot that is very consistent, this is a tough run. It's a proper reef, and when the swell is too big, like Monday the 20th with 10ft, it's just too much for the spot. The best bet is that Thursday the 23rd.
Rusty.
