The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it's a quiet run. We've got a decent stretch starting out, but the first few days are a write-off, and the second week drops right off. There's a little pocket of something glassy to chase, but you'll need to pick your moment.
The main spot in the frame is Anne Street Reef. Water temp is 67°, a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so a little extra rubber might be nice.
Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th August are a no-go. Swell is there, chest to head high on the bigger pulses (6 ft to 6 ft from the east), but the wind is blowing cross-onshore from the SE and ESE at around 12 mph. It’s choppy and messy. The combined energy is moderate to strong (432 to 690), but the quality is zero.
Things start to look a little more promising from Friday 21st. The swell drops to about 4 ft to 4 ft from the east, but the wind eases right off. Friday afternoon actually goes offshore from the east, but the wave comment still calls it poor. Still, it’s a sign of change.
The real standout window kicks off Saturday 22nd into Sunday 23rd August. Saturday morning is glassy. The wind is a light S at 3 mph, and we have clean, surfable waves at 4 ft from the east. The energy is weak (136), but for a reef break, that small, clean swell could shape up into some fun little runners. Sunday morning looks very similar, glassy again with a light S breeze and waves about 4 ft from the east-northeast. This is the best on offer for the first week. It’s small, but it’s clean, and it’s a reef, so it could be fun for a beginner session. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Monday 24th still has a glassy morning, but the swell drops to 2 ft. From here, it’s a slow decline. The wave heights shrink through the week, and by Wednesday 26th, we get some offshore wind from the west, but the swell is just 2 ft. Clean, but tiny. Thursday 27th through to Saturday 29th are very small, with waves between 2 ft and 2 ft. The combined energy is weak (50 to 80). Saturday afternoon does go glassy again, but it's ankle to knee high.
Sunday 30th August sees a bump in size to 7 ft from the southeast, but it comes with onshore wind and a short period of 7 seconds. It’s sloppy and blown out. Not worth it. That continues into Monday 31st and the start of September, with a messy mix of onshore wind and poor conditions. The swell doesn't have any quality to it.
Beyond that, into September 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, the forecast is for small to moderate swell but nearly all of it is accompanied by cross-onshore winds from the SSE or SE. There’s a pulse with a long period (11 seconds) on Wednesday 2nd, but the wind ruins any quality. It's a lockout for most of the second week.
Honestly, the best bet is to hit the Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August glassy mornings at Anne Street Reef. It’s small but it’s clean, and that’s your best shot. After that, it’s a long gap of poor conditions until the outlook changes.
Rusty.
