The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be honest – the next couple weeks are pretty flat for a proper surf. There’s really only one spot worth talking about, and even it’s a tough go for most of the time.
The first chance for anything rideable is Saturday the 18th of July at Anne Street Reef. There’s a 2.5m swell from the SE, but the wind is howling cross-off at 22 mph. The water is about 69°, which is normal for the season. The combined swell energy is moderate (1381), but the wind is ruining it – just marginal conditions at best.
Sunday the 19th gets ugly. The swell jumps to a big 13ft from the SE, but the wind is screaming from the SSE at 28 mph, blowing straight cross-shore. This is dangerous – expert-only territory if anyone is crazy enough. The energy is strong at 2833, but it’s a total mess.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are the same sad story – 12ft dropping to 8ft, but still getting hammered by strong cross-shore and cross-onshore winds. Not for paddle surfing.
From Wednesday the 22nd on, the swell drops way off. We’re talking 5ft down to 2ft, with short periods of 8 seconds or less. The winds do go light on a few mornings – like Thursday the 23rd morning and Sunday the 26th morning – so you might get a clean face, but the waves are tiny and weak. The energy drops to double digits (80 or less) by the 27th – really weak.
There’s one little glimmer on Saturday the 1st of August. The swell is only 3ft, but it’s a long-period 12-second groundswell from the ESE, and it goes glassy in the morning. That’s the kind of clean, small-wave session you could enjoy on a longboard. The 2nd of August is similar – glassy but flat.
The first few days are a washout unless you’re into kite surfing with that strong wind and big sloppy swell. The only real standout is the early morning of August 1st – small but clean. Everything else is not worth your time.
Rusty.
