The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s cut through the chatter. This 16-day look at Anne Street Reef starts rough, but the second half shapes up real nice. First week’s mostly a dud, so don’t rush out.
Tuesday the 14th to Wednesday the 15th is tiny – 1ft to 0.7ft from the SE, with a 10-second period. Winds are off or cross-on, but there’s no push. Combined energy is a weak 28 to 14, so you’re just floating. Not worth it.
Thursday the 16th through Sunday the 19th sees the swell pump up to 7ft – 13ft from the SE and ESE, but the wind is screaming from the SSE at 22-25 mph, side-shore or cross-off, making a mess of it. Water’s churned into lumpy cross-chop, and combined energy hits 3716 on Sunday the 19th – that’s strong, but it’s a washing machine. For a reef, that’s more kite-surfing territory than paddle surfing. Water temp is 69°, about average for the time of year.
Monday the 20th through Thursday the 23rd keeps the swell at 7ft – 8ft from the ESE, with periods stretching to 10-13 seconds. Winds are still fresh from the SE at 19 mph, but mornings are cleaner with cross-off breezes. Combined energy is in the thousands, so there’s plenty of power, but the conditions are marginal.
Now for the real deal. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are the standouts. Saturday morning the 25th: 7ft from the ESE at a 12-second period, with glassy wind – just 3 mph from the SW. The wave comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” Combined energy is 1655, moderate to strong, and with that glassy face, the reef will be peeling clean. It’s big for beginners, but for anyone who can handle overhead waves, it’s the best of the run. Sunday morning the 26th is similar: 7ft ESE at 11 seconds, with a light offshore from the SW at 6 mph. Clean and powerful. Crowds are “sometimes” an issue, so get out early.
The last days slide off. Monday the 28th to Wednesday the 29th: 4ft – 3ft from the ESE, with periods of 10-11 seconds. Winds turn offshore from the WSW and W at 9-16 mph, keeping things clean. Combined energy drops to 262-274, so it’s smaller but still fun.
Best bet: Saturday the 25th morning. Glassy, 7ft from the ESE, and the reef’s going to be a treat for advanced surfers. Sunday the 26th morning is also a winner.
Rusty.
