The Lowdown

Right then, let's have a look at what's in store for Anne Street Reef over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it's a pretty bleak run. The forecast is showing a long stretch of small, weak surf with an onshore breeze messing it up most of the time. There are a couple of mornings that look okay, but for the most part, you're going to be fighting a cross-onshore wind for tiny waves.

The first glimmer of something rideable comes on Saturday the 22nd, morning session. The wind goes dead calm, and the water goes glassy. The swell is small, only about 3ft from the east, and the period is a short 7 seconds, so it's not packing much punch. The combined energy is only 130 (weak), so you'll be scratching around for little dribblers. Still, with conditions that clean and being a very consistent spot, you might pick off a few. The water temperature is 68°, which is about a degree and a half colder than normal for this time of year, so not too bad to be out in.

Sunday the 23rd morning is another chance. Again, glassy conditions with light winds, this time out of the southeast, and a similar 4ft east-northeast swell. The wave energy is a tad higher at 138, but it's still weak. The period remains short, so expect fat, crumbly waves.

Looking further ahead, there's a bit more energy showing up in the second week, but the wind conditions don't get any better. On Wednesday the 26th, the wind actually goes offshore from the west-southwest in the afternoon, which is a huge positive for a break that likes an east-southeast swell. The combined energy is still only 132 (weak) and the waves are a measly 3ft, so it's tiny, but it'll be clean. By the time we get to Thursday September 3rd, the swell size bumps up to 5ft then 7ft from the southeast, but it's still maxing out at a 7-second period and the wind is blowing straight onshore. The combined energy gets up to 497 (moderate), but with those conditions, it's going to be a messy, blown-out wall.

Forget the rest of the week after that. Strong onshore winds and small swell just keep the quality rock bottom. On Monday the 31st, there's even heavy rain and a fresh breeze, which will make a session thoroughly miserable.

So, the standout? If you're desperate, make the call for Saturday the 22nd morning or Sunday the 23rd morning for the glassy conditions. The waves won't be memorable, but you'll get wet. The end of the run, September 3rd, has the most size, but it's a write-off for a surfboard – that's more of a kiter's wind and swell.

Rusty.
