The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s cut to it – the next 16 days look rough for getting wet. There’s a quick moment of something big on the first Monday, but it’s for the brave only, and after that, it’s a long, quiet stretch.
It all starts Monday the 20th of July at Anne Street Reef. Monday morning brings a solid 12 ft swell from the ESE with a 10-second period and a ton of energy – we’re talking very strong (2787). The direction is spot on for this reef, but the size is way too big. This is a beginner’s spot, and anything over 5 ft pushes it; at 12 ft, it’s experts only, and with a fresh 22 mph cross-shore wind, it’ll be lumpy and hard work. Water temp is about 68°F, which is normal for the time of year. Monday afternoon drops to 10 ft, but it’s still massive and messy. If you’re a charger, it’s your only shot, but it’s a battle.
Tuesday the 21st the swell drops but the quality is poor. Morning has 8 ft with a moderate cross-onshore wind and the same story in the afternoon at 7 ft. Not worth it.
Wednesday the 22nd is smaller at 6 ft in the morning and 5 ft in the afternoon, but still cross-onshore and choppy.
Thursday the 23rd morning finally brings some hope: 4 ft from the east with a light 3 mph cross-offshore breeze, clean conditions, and weak to moderate energy (203). It’s labelled as “good surf conditions,” and for this reef, that’s the best in the window. The period is short at 8 seconds, so not much power, but for a beginner-friendly wave, small and clean is a winner. Thursday morning is your standout.
After that, it’s a fast drop-off. Thursday afternoon goes onshore. Friday the 24th morning has a clean 3 ft wave but weak energy. Saturday the 25th morning is clean at 4 ft with a light cross-offshore breeze, but still short-period and modest energy. It’s OK for a beginner, but nothing special.
From Sunday the 26th onward, it’s a dry spell. Swell drops below 2 ft, energy falls into the double digits, and it stays that way all the way through to Tuesday the 4th of August – a 10-day gap with no recommendations. Winds are often messy, and even when it’s clean, there’s just not enough wave. By July 29th, there’s a 0.7 ft groundswell with an 11-second period, which sounds good for a reef, but at that size, it’s barely a ripple.
So, bottom line: if you’re a beginner or intermediate, this isn’t your window. The only real chance for a surf – a small, clean wave – is Thursday morning the 23rd of July. After that, it’s quiet. But that’s normal for this spot; it won’t stay flat forever. Keep watching the charts.
Stay frothy,
Rusty
