The Lowdown
Righto, let’s break down what’s on offer at Anne Street Reef for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with ya – it’s gonna take some patience. This place is usually real consistent, but the quality’s just not there for most of the run.
You’re lookin’ at knee-to-waist high waves from the east, short-period stuff around 7 to 8 seconds – typical weak windswell. The water’s 68°, and that’s about a degree colder than normal for this time of year, so grab a thick wetsuit. The combined swell energy bounces around from a weak 86 up to a moderate 346 on the afternoon of August 31st, but the wind’ll ruin it.
Saturday the 22nd is a dud – 3ft east swell but the wind’s side-offshore and gets stronger in the afternoon. Sunday the 23rd morning is your best window: 3ft from the east-northeast, period edges up to 8 seconds, and the wind’s a light cross-offshore from the south at 6 mph. It’ll be clean. The energy’s only moderate at 102, but for a reef that’s very consistent and loves east-southeast swell, this is the one to chase. Crowds can turn up sometimes, so get out there early.
From Sunday afternoon it turns poor. Monday the 24th morning is surfable but ordinary, then onshore wind takes over. Tuesday the 25th morning is glassy with 3ft from the east-northeast – clean, but just ordinary. Wednesday the 26th through Friday the 28th is all poor – cross and onshore winds, lumpy chop.
Saturday the 29th morning is glassy again with 3ft east swell and an 8-second period, energy at 156. It’s rideable but still ordinary. Not a highlight.
Sunday the 30th sees a bump in size – 5ft in the morning, 5ft in the afternoon – but it’s from the east-southeast with a short 6-second period and fresh cross-winds at 19 mph. That’s lumpy and messy, not for a paddle board. For a beach-and-reef setup like this in those conditions, you might as well rig up a kite.
Monday the 31st holds at 5ft in the morning with clean cross-offshore wind, but the period’s still weak at 7 seconds. Energy hits 346 in the afternoon but with cross-onshore wind and chop.
From September 1st onward, we’re back to 3ft to 3ft of east swell. The mornings on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th of September are glassy – that’s your only saving grace. The period stretches to 10 seconds on the morning of the 2nd, which is proper groundswell, but the height’s only 3ft. That long period on a reef might give you a few clean ones if you’re patient.
Bottom line, Sunday the 23rd of August morning is your stand-out – cleanest and most surfable of the lot. Tuesday the 1st of September morning is another look, glassy with 3ft from the east, but it’s nothing special. The second week is promising but less certain – watch those glassy mornings. For the rest, it’s mostly poor conditions and meh swell. Don’t drive far for it.
