The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this stretch is not firing for a while. We’ve got one spot on the menu, Anne Street Reef, and it’s a consistent little reef setup that’s beginner-friendly. But the next week and a half is mostly a write-off.
We kick off Friday the 21st with a morning session that’s glassy as can be – wind is barely a whisper from the SE at 3 mph. The swell is a weak 4 ft out of the east, period a short 7 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (182), but the waves are ordinary. Water temp is sitting at 68°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year.
The real story here is the wind on Friday morning – that glassy surface is a rare treat, but the swell is weak and short-period. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. Afternoon goes onshore and it’s dead. Saturday the 22nd starts glassy again but with even smaller 3 ft east swell and weak energy (88). The pattern is grim: mostly poor surf with cross or onshore winds through the end of August.
There’s a glimmer Thursday the 27th morning – a clean 4 ft swell from the ENE, period 8 seconds, with a moderate combined energy (244) and light offshore S wind at 9 mph. That’s the best of the first week, but still only a 2/10 in my book. Then we clean up again Sunday the 30th morning with a 5 ft pulse from the ESE, period only 6 seconds, but with clean cross-offshore SSW wind at 12 mph. Combined energy is 225 – still just marginal.
Monday the 31st morning sees the biggest swell of the run: 6 ft from the ESE, period 7 seconds, combined energy spiking to 416 (strong). With clean cross-offshore S wind at 12 mph, this is the standout. That’s expert territory at that size for a reef, and it’s a Monday – crowds are possible. This is the day to have your board waxed and your head in the game.
After that, it fades. Tuesday September 1st morning is 5 ft and clean, but then the wind swings onshore and the rest of the first week of September is a mix of poor conditions and small, weak swell. Friday September 5th morning is a last gasp of glassy conditions with tiny 3 ft east swell and weak energy (102) – not worth the paddle.
Truth is, we’ve got about 10 days of mostly dud surf. The only real standout is Monday the 31st of August morning. If you’re an experienced surfer and don’t mind a bit of company, that’s your window. Otherwise, the forecasts can always change, but for now, keep your expectations low.
Rusty.
