The Lowdown
Alright, folks, let’s get real. This stretch looks pretty grim for Anne Street Reef. The ocean’s got a little bit of life, but the wind is going to be your enemy for most of the next two weeks. We’re looking at a lot of cross-onshore and cross-shore breezes that are gonna turn it into a washing machine. You’re gonna have to pick your moments, and there aren't many.
The water temp is 20°, which is about 1° colder than normal for this time of year, so don't forget the booties if you're sensitive to cold.
Your first real window is on Thursday, August 21st. Morning looks glassy, with the wind dropping to just 3 mph from the SSE. The swell is small, 4ft from the east with a period of 7 seconds, and it’s clean. The energy is weak at 170, but it’s the cleanest you’ll see. It’s just ordinary surf, but you can sneak a few in before the onshore kicks in.
Friday, August 22nd, is a similar deal. Glassy in the morning, 3ft of east swell, but the period is still short. This is a marginal one at best, only for the desperate dawn patrol. The energy is really weak at 89, so keep the expectations low.
Then there’s another glassy window on Monday, August 24th morning, but the swell remains tiny at 3ft. It’s surfable, but not much else.
After that, we hit a flat spell. From the 25th through the end of the month, the swell drops off a cliff and the wind gets messy. The morning of the 25th has a clean cross-off breeze, but there’s just not enough water moving—only 3ft. It’s not worth the paddle.
The only other moments to consider are clean windows on the mornings of the 26th and 27th, with 2ft – 3ft of swell. It’s tiny, weak, and you’ll be surfing ankle-biters.
From the 28th onwards, it’s essentially flat and blown out. The swell barely reaches 2ft, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore or cross-shore. There’s a tiny pulse around September 2nd, but it’s still small (3ft) and the wind is fresh and lumpy, making it a complete mess.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Thursday, the 21st. It’s the only time where conditions and swell line up, and even then it’s just a knee-to-waist-high day. It’s a reef break and it’s very consistent, but the swell is from the ESE, which is what it likes. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, so if you’re just getting your feet wet or want to log around, that’s your shot.
Honestly, there’s a whole lot of nothing out there. The surf is small, the winds are mostly junk, and the wave energy is weak. It’s one of those stretches where the ocean doesn’t want to cooperate. Forecasts can change, so don’t write it off completely, but don’t hold your breath either.
Stay patient. Rusty out.
