Table - best surf conditions forecast for Anne Street Reef over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s goin’ down for Anne Street Reef over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the water’s a bit colder than usual for this time of year, about 69°, so you’ll feel that chill if you’re paddlin’ out early. Not a big deal, but you’ll want the extra rubber.
The first few days are pretty quiet. Saturday morning the 11th has a small 3ft SE swell rollin’ with a clean 11-second period, and the wind is a cross-off from the south at just 3 mph, so it’s surfable but nothin’ flash. The energy’s weak (231). After that, we’ve got a run of tiny, poor surf right through to Wednesday morning the 15th – waves around 1.0ft to 2ft, with onshore and cross-off winds. It’s a proper flat spell.
Now, Thursday the 16th – that’s when the ocean gets fired up. A big pulse of SE groundswell hits, 8ft in the morning with a solid 11-second period, and the energy’s strong (1387). The wind is a cross-off from the south at 25 mph, so it’s gonna be a bit wild. By the afternoon, the swell jumps to 12ft SE, but with that same nasty cross-off wind. This size is only for the experienced crew, and the wind’s gonna make it messy. The wave comment says it’s too big for this break, so take it easy.
Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th stays big – 10ft to 12ft SE swell, with cross-shore winds from the SSE at 15 to 25 mph. The energy is massive (over 2500 on some days), but the conditions are described as poor with a messy cross-chop. This looks more like a kite-surfing kind of setup than a paddle session.
The real standout, the one you want to mark on the calendar, is Tuesday the 21st of July. Morning brings a clean 7ft ESE swell, 12-second period, and offshore wind from the SW at 12 mph. That’s the recipe for hollow, clean waves at this reef. The energy is strong (1235), and the conditions are rated excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds up too, with 7ft and a cross-off wind. This is the best of the whole outlook.
Wednesday the 22nd drops a touch to 5ft, still clean in the morning, but the wind swings cross-shore later. Then Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are marginal, with 4ft to 3ft and cross-off or cross-on winds.
But then! Sunday the 26th of July – another beauty. The morning is glassy, calm wind, with a 7ft SE swell, 11-second period, and a massive energy reading of 1704. That’s the kind of morning you wake up early for. It’s rated excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon goes a bit onshore, so get it while it’s clean.
So, to sum it up: the next few days are flat, then a big, windy swell from the 16th that’s more for the kites. Your best windows are Tuesday the 21st and Sunday the 26th – both mornings, both with clean, strong groundswell and good winds. Don’t miss ’em.
Rusty.
