The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

To be honest, it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead. We’re looking at a long run of poor surf conditions with only a few fleeting moments that are worth a paddle. For the most part, the wind is going to be a real problem, and the swell is either small, short-period, or both.

The first real chance of anything surfable kicks off on Thursday morning, 22 August at Anne Street Reef. We’ve got a small 3 ft easterly swell on offer, but the real highlight here is the glassy conditions. The sea will be flat as a tack, and the combined energy is weak at 111. It’s surfable, but very ordinary – a tiny window for a longboard or a foiler if you’re desperate. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent spring suit.

The next chance comes on Monday morning, 25 August. Again, it’s a small 3 ft swell from the east-northeast, and the wind is light and glassy. The combined energy is a paltry 95, so you’re looking at soft, weak waves. The break is a very consistent reef, and it’s best with an ESE swell, so this east-northeast energy isn't quite ideal. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, so if you’re learning, it might be okay, but don’t expect any spinners.

After that, there’s a bit of a gap until Wednesday morning, 27 August, when we get a small 3 ft easterly swell with a clean, cross-off wind from the SSW. The combined energy is still weak at 87, but the cleaner conditions will make it look better than it is. Not a standout, but a possible dawny if you’re keen.

The only other flicker of hope is on Thursday morning, 28 August, with a tiny 2 ft swell and another glassy morning. The combined energy is a mere 67, so it’s barely there. For a reef that’s very consistent, this is a real desert.

The second week is even worse. From the 29th of August through to the 2nd of September, it’s a relentless mix of choppy, windy, and small conditions. The swell direction often swings around, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore or cross, making a mess of anything that tries to form. On the 31st of August, a long-period 15 second swell from the SE shows up, but it’s only 1 ft and the wind is a choppy cross-onshore, making it a total write-off.

There is simply no standout session in this 16-day window. The only real advice is to keep an eye on the charts, because it tends not to stay this poor for long, and the conditions can change. For now, the kite surfers might get more out of the wind than we will.

Rusty.
