The Lowdown
Right then, folks. Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for this neck of the woods. Let's break it down.
We're looking at Anne Street Reef, which is a very consistent reef break. It's an exposed spot, so it picks up a fair bit of energy. The water temperature is running about average for this time of year, so nothing too wild there.
Honestly, the next few days are a bit of a write-off. We've got a bit of a flat spell to start with. From Saturday the 22nd through to Wednesday the 26th of August, it's pretty grim. The swell is tiny, barely cracking 3 ft, with a short, weak period around 7-8 seconds. The combined energy is weak, sitting around 105-155, and the wind is all over the shop – cross, onshore, and just generally messy. It's surfable, but you'd be doing it for the paddle, not the wave. Thursday morning the 27th and Friday morning the 28th are the first real glimmers of hope. The swell bumps up a touch to 4 ft - 5 ft from the ENE, with a bit more punch in the water; the energy jumps to 278-411. More importantly, we get a clean, cross-off wind from the south. That's the standout for this whole run. The wave quality will be decent, and the reef will be working.
After that, it gets messy again. The wind goes onshore or cross-shore, the swell gets a bit lumpier, and the scores drop off. There's a spike in energy on the 2nd of September, hitting 521, but it's a 6 ft, 7-second wind swell with a cross-shore wind, which is just a messy, chunky affair. It's not really a paddler's friend. The last week of the forecast is all over the shop; a lot of rain and strong winds, especially on the 31st of August and 1st of September, with fresh onshore breezes. That's not going to be pretty.
So, to sum it up: the best bet is to forget about this weekend and the start of next week. Point your board towards Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of August. Early morning sessions with that south wind will be your best chance for a clean, fun wave. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or just plain ugly.
Rusty.
