The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our local stretch.
We’re looking at a pretty quiet run ahead, with only one real highlight that’s worth getting excited about. The surf stays small and ordinary for most of the next two weeks, but there’s a brief window of cleaner conditions that could be worth a paddle.
The first session that shows any promise is on Thursday morning, 21 August at Anne Street Reef. It’s small, with waves around 4 ft pushing in from the east, but the real story is the wind. We’ve got a light SSW breeze blowing cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is a bit colder than average for this time of year, so you might want a spring suit. The swell energy is weak at 182, and the period is short at 7 seconds, so don’t expect much push. It’s surfable, but only just – a very ordinary day for the diehards.
The rest of the outlook is mostly a write-off. Thursday afternoon 20 August through to Wednesday 3 September is filled with poor surf conditions, onshore winds, and tiny waves. There are a few scattered mornings with glassy or clean conditions, like Saturday 22 August morning when the wind drops to zero and the waves are around 3 ft, but the energy is tiny (111) and the swell is short-period. It’s surfable in the sense you can get a float, but it’s not going to get your heart racing.
The most interesting stretch is actually further out. Monday 31 August has a bump in swell to 6–6 ft from the ENE, with moderate energy (279–396), but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. That’s not worth the drive. Tuesday 1 September morning looks cleaner with a cross-offshore wind from the NW, but the waves are still small at 5 ft and the energy is moderate (325). Still, it’s the best of a bad bunch.
Wednesday 2 September is the standout for the whole outlook. The morning has a solid offshore WSW wind at 12 mph, waves around 4 ft from the east, and clean conditions. Energy is moderate at 186, period is short, but the wind will make it look better than it is. The afternoon holds clean too with a lighter offshore. This is the session to target if you’re desperate for a wave.
After that, it fades right out. Thursday 3 September morning has clean conditions but the swell drops to 3 ft and the period is a pathetic 5 seconds. Friday 4 September morning has a longer period of 10 seconds but only 2 ft of swell. Not worth suiting up.
So, if you’re keen, pencil in Wednesday 2 September morning for the cleanest, most rideable swell. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best we’ve got.
Rusty.
