Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's cooking for the Anne Street Reef area over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. We start off with some size, but the conditions are messy. The real standout window for clean, quality waves is actually the morning of Saturday the 11th right through to Monday the 13th, when the wind finally plays ball. That stretch is the pick of the entire forecast.
Monday afternoon, July 6th, we’ve got solid 8ft swell from the SE, but with a 22 mph crosswind and a short 7-second period, it’s just a lumpy, poor mess. Not worth paddling out for. That sets the tone for the next couple of days. The swell holds above 7ft through to Wednesday, July 8th, and even peaks at a moderate wave energy of 1254 (combined energy) Wednesday afternoon, but the wind stays cross or cross-shore, chopping it up. It’s frustrating because there’s power but no shape.
Thursday morning, July 9th shows a glimmer of hope. We’ve got 8ft SE swell (11-second period) with a clean cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is a strong 1838. This is the biggest, cleanest window in the first week. But it’s a morning window only; the afternoon drops right off to 3ft. For the experienced crew, this is a solid early session.
Now, for the real sweet spot. The winds start to ease on Friday morning, July 10th, with clean 5ft surf, and then we roll into the weekend. From Saturday morning, July 11th, through to Monday morning, July 13th, it’s all about clean conditions. The swell drops to a clean, rideable 3-3ft from the ESE with an 11-second period. Sunday afternoon, July 12th, is particularly special with zero wind and glassy conditions on a 3ft, 11-second groundswell. The wave energy is low (around 196) but for a longboard or a funboard, that’s going to be pure, silky pleasure. This is a reef, so that long-period groundswell will wrap in beautifully, offering nice, lined-up waves. It’s a beginner-friendly size, too, so it’s a good time for everyone. Just know that crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get out early.
After that glorious run, there’s a long, quiet stretch. From Tuesday, July 14th, right through to Thursday, July 16th, the swell drops to almost nothing—well below 2ft. Don’t bother. The next sniff of action comes on Friday, July 17th, with a pulse of 5ft SSE swell, but it’s a short-period 6-second windswell with a 19 mph crosswind. It’s choppy and ugly—kite-surfing territory more than anything.
We get a little spike of energy on Sunday, July 19th, with a very long 14-second period ESE swell, but it’s only 1-2ft. The energy reads 119-160, but with a light cross-onshore wind, it’s not really going to deliver much. For the final few days, the water stays average temperature for the time of year, around 68°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this spot, so a spring suit is a good call for the clean weekend sessions.
The real winner here is that stretch from Saturday morning the 11th through Monday the 13th. Set your alarms.
Rusty.
