The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s brewing at Anne Street Reef over the next couple of weeks. This is a reef break that’s very consistent and open to swell, so it’s usually worth a look. But right now, we’ve got to wade through a bit of junk before the good stuff shows up.

The next few days are pretty grim. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th have some decent size – around 7ft to 7ft from the SSE and SE – but the wind is screaming at 22 mph, either cross-off or straight cross. That’s ugly water. Saturday the 18th morning is still messy with a 6ft SSE swell and fresh cross-off wind, and the combined swell energy is moderate at 641 – nothing special. Then Saturday afternoon the swell jumps to 10ft from the SE with a 10-second period, and the energy rockets to 1389. That’s a lot of juice, but the break is a reef and it’s predicted to be too big for this spot. Only for the hardcore.

Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th stay ugly – 10ft to 12ft swell, strong cross-winds over 22 mph, and energy readings between 1839 and 2108. That’s strong to very strong wave energy, but with those winds it’s a mess. Tuesday the 21st sees the swell drop to around 8ft to 8ft, but it’s still cross-shore with a moderate breeze, and energy is 1130–1600. Marginal at best.

There’s a real dry spell here – from Thursday the 16th all the way through to late in the month, it’s just not on. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd have smaller swell around 4ft to 6ft, but the wind is cross-on or cross, and the conditions are poor. Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th finally show some cleaner windows – Friday morning has a light S wind at 9 mph, cross-off, with a 4ft E swell and a short 8-second period. The energy is weak at 163–184. It’s surfable but pretty average. Saturday morning the 25th is the best of that run: clear skies, 4ft E swell, 8-second period, and a glassy cross-off breeze from the SSW at 9 mph. Combined energy is still low at 280, but the conditions will be clean for a beginner-friendly reef.

The real standout, and I mean it, is the very end of the outlook. On Wednesday the 30th and Thursday the 31st of July, we get a proper clean-up. A 5ft to 5ft ENE swell with an 8-second period, but the wind switches to offshore from the WSW at 12 mph. That’s a moderate offshore breeze, and the forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” The energy readings are 314–339 – moderate, not huge, but with that offshore wind and the reef’s exposure, it’s going to be clean, lined-up, and fun for everyone. Crowds can show up here sometimes, so get there early. Water temp is about average for this time of year – nothing out of the ordinary. This is the pick of the whole stretch.

If you’re looking in the second week, that Saturday the 25th morning is a distant second, but the 30th and 31st are the ones to circle.

Rusty.
