The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Well, to be honest, the next 16 days look pretty slim pickings. We’re kicking off the forecast with a bit of a gap because there’s nothing worth paddling out for until Friday morning. The first real chance to get wet comes on the 21st of August.
Anne Street Reef is the only spot in the game, and it’s a tricky one. It’s a very consistent reef break, but it only works best with swell from the ESE. The water is sitting at 68°—a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want that extra layer.
The standout moment is Friday morning, the 21st of August. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the E, and the wind is dead flat – glassy. That’s a rare treat. The combined wave energy is moderate (254), so there’s some push behind it, but the period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit sectiony and fat. Still, with those conditions, it’s the best you’re going to get.
Saturday morning, the 22nd, is another glassy start with 3ft from the ENE, but it’s weak (91). It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it. The next real glimpse of something bigger comes almost a week later, on Thursday morning, the 27th of August. The swell jumps up to 6ft from the SSE, with a very short period of 6 seconds, and clean cross-off winds. The energy is decent (283), but that swell direction is not ideal for the reef. It’ll be lumpy and hard to read. For experienced surfers only at that size.
Beyond that, Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th have some clean morning windows, but the swell is small and weak. The whole second week fades out into tiny, poor surf with onshore winds. A few days with a longer period (10-11 seconds) in early September are too small and won’t do anything.
So, if you’re keen, make the call for Friday morning the 21st. It’s not going to be epic, but it’ll be the cleanest wave you’ll find. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for not much reward.
Rusty.
