The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Anglet – La Madrague over the next couple of weeks.

We’re starting off with a bit of a flat spell, I’m not gonna lie. The first few days are a write-off for any proper surfing. Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th are all about tiny, weak waves with cross-onshore winds messin’ things up. The combined energy is barely a whisper, under 100, so don’t even bother waxin’ up. Wednesday the 19th is the same story – glassy but tiny, no push to speak of.

Now, Thursday the 20th is where things start to get interesting. That morning, we’ve got a glassy dawn with a 4ft swell rollin’ in from the NW, and the period jumps to 11 seconds. The combined energy hits 281, a solid moderate pulse. That’s a clean, workable wave for a Thursday morning session, but it’s gonna be a short-lived window as the wind swings cross-on by the afternoon and messes it up.

Friday the 21st is the standout of the first week. Early morning, glassy conditions again, with a 5ft NW swell at 10 seconds. The energy is 444 – that’s a proper step up, and with the light offshore breeze from the NNE, it’s gonna be clean. This is the best bet for the week. The water temp is a balmy 77°, which is 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – very unusual, so you might not even need a full suit.

The weekend slumps a bit. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd have some surfable waves, but the energy drops and the conditions are just ordinary. The morning of Saturday the 22nd has a light offshore from the east, so it’ll be clean, but the swell is only 3ft with 158 energy. It’s a fun wave, but nothing to get too excited about.

Then we hit a dry patch from Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 26th. The swell is small, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is weak. It’s a few days of nothin’ special.

Thursday the 27th brings a little hope with a glassy morning and a 3ft swell at 9 seconds, 152 energy. It’s surfable, but just ordinary. The real story, though, is what’s brewing for the end of the month.

Friday the 28th sees a big jump in size. The morning has 5ft at 9 seconds, but the cross-onshore wind is gonna make it choppy. The afternoon pumps up to 8ft with 865 energy, but again, the wind is cross-on. It’s a lot of water, but messy.

Now, Saturday the 29th is a beast. The morning forecast is huge: 15ft of NW swell with a 14-second period. The combined energy is 7039 – that’s serious power. But here’s the truth: that’s way too big for La Madrague. It’s a beach/jetty setup, and with that kind of size, only experts should even look at it. The wind is glassy, which is a tease, but it’s a dangerous day. Even the afternoon, with 13ft, is too much.

Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st settle down a bit, but we’re still lookin’ at 7ft to 8ft with cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The energy is still high, but the quality is poor.

So, bottom line: your best bet is the morning of Friday the 21st of August. That’s the one that’ll have you smilin’. The big swell at the end of the month is for the brave and the very experienced only. For the rest of us, it’s a pick-and-choose kinda period.

Stay stoked, Rusty.
