The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s coming up for Anglet - L'Ocean.

First thing you notice is the water is sitting at 74°—that’s 5° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s feeling more like a late summer swim than a September session. Nice.

We’ve got a slow start. Wednesday morning the 9th is a write-off: 6ft of NW swell at 9 seconds, but that north wind is blowing cross and the energy is high (540) but messy. Choppy, marginal. Not worth paddling out. Wednesday afternoon is even worse with cross-on wind and only 5ft. Skip it.

Thursday morning the 10th is where it finally turns on. Glassy conditions with a light easterly breeze, 4ft of NW swell at 10 seconds, and moderate energy (311). The surf is clean, the waves are shaping up. This is a solid morning for a longboard or a funboard. Crowds are possible here, but with conditions this good, expect company.

Thursday afternoon gets blown out again by a strong NNW cross-on wind. Friday and Saturday mornings are glassy but small—2ft to 3ft, weak energy (83–88). Surfable if you’re desperate, but not exciting.

Now here’s the standout. Sunday morning the 13th. Glassy calm, zero wind, 4ft of NW groundswell with a very long 13-second period. Combined energy is 545—moderate but punchy. That long period means the waves will have real shape and power, and on a beach/jetty setup like this, it’ll be a bit walled-up but the clean conditions will make it worth it. This is the best on offer in the first week.

Monday morning the 14th is also good: glassy, 5ft NW at 12 seconds, energy 537. Another excellent morning session if you can get out.

The second week gets a bit more mixed. Saturday the 19th morning is the highlight: light offshore easterly wind, 4ft of NW swell with a very long 14-second period, and energy of 537. Clean conditions, solid shape. This is a promising one but it’s a week and a half out, so treat it as a hopeful call.

Tuesday the 22nd morning is glassy with 4ft NW at 12 seconds (393 energy) – another decent session but not as strong as the earlier standouts.

Late in the window, the 24th is a big swell: 6ft NW at 12 seconds, energy hitting 997, but it’s onshore westerly wind all day. That’s a lot of power with messy wind. For the experts only, and even then, it’s more of a battle than a pleasure. That setup might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Overall, the best windows are Sunday the 13th and Monday the 14th mornings, with Saturday the 19th morning as a promising late call. Don’t bother with the first couple of days.

Rusty.
