The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you: the surf outlook for the Algajola area over the next 16 days is a real mixed bag, with some long flat spells and only a couple of windows that get the heart pumping. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 85°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the paddle out won’t be a cold one.
We start off pretty ordinary. Monday the 17th has tiny 2ft swell from the west with a short 5-second period, and the wind is a messy cross-off. No real push there. Tuesday the 18th morning is a bit better with 4ft from the WSW and a 7-second period, clean with a light easterly breeze, but the energy is still only moderate (176). That’s the best of the early week, but it’s nothing to shout about.
Wednesday the 19th morning is glassy with light ESE winds and 3ft from the west – clean, but small. The rest of the week stays pretty gutless, with waves under 3ft and mostly cross or onshore winds. Friday the 21st is dead flat in the morning, with zero energy. Just a glassy lake.
Saturday the 22nd sees a spike in size – 7ft to 7ft from the west with a 7-8 second period – and the combined energy jumps to strong (645 to 858). But the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy and chopped out. The wave comment says poor conditions for surfing. That kind of setup with that much wind and size at a beach break might actually be more interesting for a kite session than a paddle.
We then hit a brutal dry spell. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Saturday the 29th, the waves are tiny – mostly under 2ft – with very low energy (mostly single or low double digits). It’s a week of near-flat conditions, with occasional glassy mornings but no real swell. Crowds won’t be an issue because there’s nothing to ride.
Now, here’s the standout. Sunday the 30th of August morning finally delivers. Swell builds to 8ft from the west with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 804. The wind is gentle from the SSW, giving a clean, cross-off setup. The wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the one. At 8ft, it’s solid and best for experienced surfers – beginners should sit this one out. The swell direction (west) isn’t a perfect match for Algajola’s optimum (southwest), but the size and clean wind make it a real highlight. Monday the 31st morning also holds well with 7ft from the west and 603 energy, still clean with a light cross-off, offering another solid day for those in the know.
After that, it drops off again. Tuesday the 1st of September gets blown out by a strong breeze and then a near gale, with waves dropping back under 3ft.
So, truth is, there’s a lot of quiet time here. Don’t waste your energy on the small, windy days. The one true standout is the Sunday 30th of August morning – that’s your window for a proper session. The Monday 31st morning is a worthy follow-up. Everything else is either flat, chopped, or just not worth suiting up for.
Stay patient, keep an eye on that Sunday the 30th, and I’ll see you in the water.
Rusty.
