The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Algajola. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty flat. There’s nothing that’s going to get the heart pumping, and no real standout sessions to circle on the calendar. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell with no real energy behind it.
Algajola is an inconsistent beginner spot, and it’s not doing us any favours right now. Starting Friday, 17 July, we’re looking at tiny 0.7ft swell from the west with a short 4 second period. The combined energy is only 2 – that’s weak. Winds are light and cross-shore, but with that kind of size, it’s barely a ripple. The water is sitting at 82°, which is 8° warmer than average for this time of year – that’s very unusual, and it feels like a bath.
Saturday and Sunday don’t improve. The swell bumps up to a max of 3ft from the southwest on Saturday afternoon, but the period is still a paltry 4 seconds, and the energy is only 18. Winds are moderate and cross-shore, creating a messy cross-chop. It’s poor.
The week that follows is a write-off. Monday, 20 July, through to Friday, 24 July, we’re seeing swell heights bouncing between 0.3ft and 2ft, but the energy is consistently low (single digits to low 30s). The wind is a mixed bag, but it’s never truly offshore for long. The best we get is a brief clean window on Friday, 24 July morning with a 2ft west swell and 7 second period, but the energy is only 38, and it’s just not enough to make it worthwhile.
The following week, from 25 July to 1 August, it’s more of the same. There are a few glassy mornings, like Saturday, 25 July and Sunday, 26 July, but the swell is either non-existent or tiny. On Sunday, 26 July morning, we have 1ft and glassy conditions, but the energy is only 7. It’s a flat calm, not a surfable wave.
The best of a bad bunch is probably the morning of Friday, 24 July, with a clean 2ft west swell and a 7 second period, or the morning of Sunday, 26 July, with glassy conditions and 1ft. But honestly, neither is going to give you a proper ride. The swell direction is generally west, which is not the optimum southwest for the break, and the period is always short. For a beach break like this, with no power and no consistency, you’re better off leaving the board at home.
A blank run like this is pretty normal for the area in this season. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s just nothing on the horizon.
Rusty.
