The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s call it like it is: the next couple of weeks are looking dead flat for the Vari region. From Tuesday, August 18th, all the way through the end of the month and into the first days of September, we’ve got zero swell on the table. The combined energy is reading zero on every single day—nothing, nada, zip. There are no waves to chase, so if you’ve got a board that needs a fresh coat of wax, now’s the time to do it.
We kick off with a taunt on Tuesday morning. It’s glassy, clear, and the water temp is right around 78°F, which is about 1°F warmer than usual—nothing to write home about. But there’s no swell behind it. The morning’s calm, but the ocean’s just sitting there, flat as a lake. The afternoon brings a little cross-on breeze, but again, it doesn’t matter when there’s nothing to ride.
The whole first week stays locked in that pattern. Wednesday the 19th, Thursday the 20th, Friday the 21st—all clear, all relatively clean, but still flat. We get some offshore winds popping up on Thursday and Friday, and Saturday the 22nd starts off glassy again, but it’s all just wasted on a flat ocean. No period, no height, no direction—just a big, empty horizon.
The second week doesn't offer any relief either. From Sunday the 23rd through Monday the 31st, it’s the same deal. Winds shift around, mostly light and offshore, but the combined energy stays at zero. The report just keeps repeating “poor surf conditions.” Even when the winds freshen up on the 28th and 29th, with a solid offshore breeze on Saturday morning, there’s still no swell to push through. It’s like the wind’s blowing over a parking lot.
And the forecast into September 1st and 2nd is no better—cross-offshore winds, mostly clean, but still no surf. This is a proper dead spell. The breaks here are inconsistent at the best of times, but this is a full-blown dry run. With winds that strong and no waves, the setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing.
Don’t lose hope, though. These flat patches don't usually last forever, and forecasts can shift. But as it stands, there’s nothing to get excited about. I’ll be back when there’s something worth getting wet for.
Rusty.
