The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this stretch of coast is looking pretty flat and ordinary for the next couple of weeks. There’s no real swell on the cards, and the wind’s mostly going to be onshore or cross-onshore, so the surf is going to be small and messy. We’re looking at a long run of knee-to-waist-high slop at best, and honestly, for most of the period, you’ll be fighting whitewash and chop more than catching anything rideable.
The first week is a write-off. From Friday the 21st through to Thursday the 27th, we’ve got swell heights hanging around 1ft to 2ft with weak energy—the combined energy is in the single digits to low twenties, which is barely a pulse. The wind is mostly onshore from the northwest at 12-18 mph in the afternoons, and while the mornings are glassy, there’s just nothing to ride. It’s flat, it’s sleepy, and it’s not worth waxing up.
Now, there’s a tiny glimmer on Friday morning the 28th. The swell bumps up slightly to 2ft, period stretches to 7 seconds, and the wind turns cross-offshore from the SSW at 9 mph. The energy jumps to 42, which is still weak, but at least the surface is clean. That’s a small window for a longboard and some fun little rollers, if you’re desperate. The afternoon gets chopped again, so it’s a morning-only deal.
Saturday the 29th is the one to circle, and it’s the only real standout of this whole outlook. The morning brings 3ft of swell from the WNW with an 8-second period, and the combined energy reads 103, pushing into the moderate range. The wind is glassy—totally off—with a light WSW breeze at 3 mph. That’s the cleanest, most rideable surf we’re going to see. Dromi (Ashdod) will be small but clean, with tiny little shoulders. It’s a beginner-friendly break anyway, and this is about as good as it gets. Don’t expect waves with any push, but for a cruise and a few trim rides, it’s worth the paddle out. Crowds are often around, so expect company.
From Sunday the 30th, it fades right back. The swell drops to 2ft in the morning with light cross-on wind, then the afternoons are blown out by a moderate northwest breeze. The energy collapses back to the 30s and 40s. The first week of September follows the same script—mornings are glassy but flat, afternoons are messy and onshore. There’s a slight bump around Tuesday the 1st with 3ft swell in the morning, but the energy is only 136 and the wind is cross-shore, so it’s not going to be clean. The rest of that week stays in the 2ft to 3ft range with weak to moderate energy, but the afternoons are consistently blown out.
The second week is even quieter, with nothing really worth mentioning. The mornings are glassy but the swell is tiny, and the afternoons are onshore slop. By the 5th, we’re back to 2ft with weak energy and a cross-on breeze.
So, bottom line—this is a barren run. The one bright spot is the morning of Saturday the 29th, with that clean, glassy 3ft WNW swell. It’s not big, not powerful, but it’s the best we get. Everything else is a flat, choppy, messy grind. If it’s not worth paddling out on, don’t force it. Sometimes the ocean just needs a rest.
The water is sitting at 86°, which is about 4° warmer than normal for this time of year—unusually warm, so at least you won’t need a wetsuit. But the surf? Not much to get excited about.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts—this kind of flat spell doesn’t usually last forever.
Rusty.
