The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming our way.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards for The Womb, but it’s a bit of a wild ride. The water is sitting at 67°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus. The first real action kicks off Monday afternoon, August 3rd, with a 6ft SW groundswell pushing in at a very long 16 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 1682, but a brisk 16 mph cross-shore from the NNW is going to chop it up a bit, so it’s more of a look-see session than a standout.
The real standout is Wednesday, August 5th. We’re looking at a proper 16ft SW groundswell with that same long 16-second period, and the energy is pumping at 11762. The wind is light and cross-shore in the morning, and by afternoon it turns glassy with a light SSW breeze. That’s clean, powerful surf that’s going to be a challenge for anyone but experienced surfers, as it’s well over 8ft. The Womb is a very consistent reef, so it’ll be handling this energy well, but crowds are often a factor here.
Thursday through Sunday, August 6th to 9th, the swell stays big, between 13ft and 20ft, but the wind turns ugly. We’re talking strong onshore and cross-onshore winds, hitting 25 mph at times. The energy readings are massive, hitting 17155 on Saturday, but it’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. This setup is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The following week starts rough, with even more big swell and strong winds from Monday, August 10th through Tuesday, August 12th. The swell is huge, 15ft to 20ft, and the energy is off the charts, hitting 18177 on Monday morning. But the wind is howling, 28 mph onshore, so it’s a no-go for a paddle.
Things finally settle down later in the week. Thursday, August 13th, the swell drops to a more manageable 11ft SW groundswell, but the wind is still side-on, so it’s only so-so.
Now, here’s the second standout. Friday morning, August 14th, we get a window of pure magic. The swell is 7ft SW with a 13-second period, and the wind is glassy from the East at just 3 mph. Absolutely clean. The energy is moderate at 2410, but for experienced surfers, this is the best session of the whole forecast. The next morning, Saturday, August 15th, is also a beauty with a flat calm 10ft SW groundswell, glassy as a mirror. After that, it’s a steady decline into smaller, cleaner waves with clean cross-offshore winds through the 16th and 17th, but the quality drops off.
So, to sum it up: the absolute best windows are Wednesday, August 5th for the big, powerful, clean swell, and the morning of Friday, August 14th and Saturday, August 15th for the glassy perfection. The rest of the first week is a write-off due to wind, and the second week is promising but with less certainty.
Rusty.
