The Lowdown

Alright, listen up. I’ve scoured the charts for the next couple weeks and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: the surf is going to be a bit of a struggle. The main culprit is that onshore wind that’s locked in, blowing right into our breaks and making things messy. It’s not going to be flat, but it’s going to be poor.

The action starts around Tuesday, August 4th with some chest-high, 5ft swell from the ENE, but the wind is already up. Tuesday afternoon is similar at 5ft, but the onshore breeze is going to make it ugly. The middle of the week stays junky with waves around 4 to 4ft. The energy is weak to moderate, so there’s not much push. It’s poor surf, no two ways about it.

The wind doesn’t ease up for the weekend. Saturday and Sunday have a more solid 5 to 6ft of swell, but that onshore flow is strong, with winds hitting 20-25 mph. The energy gets a bit more moderate, but it’s wasted on a choppy surface. Again, we’re looking at poor surf conditions.

Now, here’s one to watch: around Suicides, on the 12th and 13th of August, there’s a long-period southerly groundswell. The period stretches out to 15-18 seconds and the energy jumps into a strong range. But, the size is only around 3ft, which is a bit of a letdown. And that ENE wind is still there. It’ll be a challenge for anyone, that’s for sure.

The standout, if you can call it that, is the stretch from Thursday, August 14th through to Monday, August 18th. This is the biggest swell of the period, with waves reaching a solid 7 to 8ft. The energy is strong, hitting four-digit figures, and it’s a big, powerful swell. But, it’s all for experts only. The period is short, around 7-9 seconds, and the wind is going to be howling at 25 to 30 mph. This setup is going to be more fun for the kite surfers than it is for us on our paddles. We’re in for a 16-day stretch where it’s just onshore the whole way. There’s size, there’s energy, but the wind is the thing that’s going to keep the quality down. Keep your expectations low and maybe have a backup plan.
