Table - best surf conditions forecast for Dunedin - St Clair over the next 16 days.
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's get into it, mate. We've got a solid run of swell on the way for St Clair, though we've got to sit through a few days of nothing much before the real action kicks off.
Right now, there's a pulse of S/SSW groundswell rolling in. Thursday morning the 9th of July at St Clair is looking clean with a light WNW cross-off breeze and a 4ft S swell at 14 seconds. The water's sitting at 51°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The combined energy is strong at 1328, so there's plenty of push. This is excellent surf, but at 4ft, it's still manageable for experienced surfers, not too big. The wind stays light through Friday morning, with a 4ft S swell at 16 seconds, and the water stays clean. Saturday the 11th of July is a real standout—morning is clean with a 4ft SSW swell and a NW offshore breeze, but the afternoon is where it's at: glassy conditions, a 4ft SSW swell, and the period holding at 16 seconds. That's a dreamy session, just you and the ocean.
The swell drops off a bit into Sunday and Monday, with smaller waves around 2ft to 2ft. The wind stays favourable through Sunday morning with a NNW offshore, but it's small. Monday gets a bit windy from the NNE, and the surf is poor. From Tuesday the 14th of July through to Wednesday the 16th, it's pretty ordinary—small, inconsistent waves, and the wind starts to mess things up. Wednesday afternoon is a write-off with a 16 mph WSW cross-shore.
Then we get a shift. Friday the 17th of July brings a new ESE swell, 3ft at 14 seconds, and the morning has a clean NW offshore. The afternoon jumps to 3ft SE at 17 seconds, with a light N cross-off, and the energy is solid at 649. Not a huge size, but the quality is there. Saturday the 18th of July is another cracker: morning has a 5ft SE swell with a W cross-off, and the afternoon turns glassy with a 4ft SE swell. That's a clean, fun size for St Clair, and the energy is moderate to strong.
Now, the long-range stuff. Thursday the 23rd of July is nothing special, but hold onto your board for Friday the 24th of July. That morning, a 12ft E swell at 12 seconds rolls in, with a combined energy of 3267. That's a beast. The wind is a cross-off from the NE, but the swell is too big for this break—only for experts, and even then, it's a massive, powerful wave. The afternoon stays large at 10ft. This is a huge, powerful swell, but it's not for the faint-hearted. If you're a pro, it's a date, but it's a serious step up.
Rusty.
