The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch ahead for Sao Juliao. The whole 16-day window is a write-off, my friend. There isn't a single session I'd recommend paddling out for. The entire run is plagued by that nasty cross-onshore wind, which is just chopping everything up. From Wednesday the 5th through to Thursday the 20th of August, it's all "poor surf conditions."
We start off on Wednesday afternoon with a weak 3ft NNW swell, but that 25 km/h cross-on wind makes it a messy affair. The water's at 68°F, which is about average for the time of year. Thursday the 6th sees a bit more size at 4ft, but the period drops to a weak 8 seconds with even stronger wind. The combined energy hits the 200s (288 on Thursday morning), which is moderate, but it doesn't mean a thing with that wind. That same pattern of poor quality, cross-on wind, and choppy, lumpy conditions just carries on day after day.
There's a brief moment around Monday the 17th afternoon where the swell jumps to 5ft from the NW and the energy gets strong (487), but it's still got a fresh cross-onshore breeze on it. That's too big and blown out for a beginner-friendly spot like this. Honestly, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now. We don't get a single break in the wind until the very last entry on Thursday the 20th, which finally shows a cross wind, but even then it's still a 5ft mess with a short period and a score of zero.
It's a blank run, plain and simple. For this area, a stretch like this is pretty normal when the winds don't co-operate. Don't force it – forecasts can change, but right now, leave the boards in the van.
Rusty.
