The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. It’s your boy Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Ribeira D'ilhas. I gotta be straight with you – the first week and a half is a write-off. We’re talking day after day of onshore wind and tiny, weak waves. It’s a real bummer, but that’s the hand we’re dealt.
The good news is, things start to look interesting right at the very end of the month. The real standout window is the morning of Friday, the 31st of July. The swell is pumping in from the NNW at a solid 12ft with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a lot of water moving, and the combined energy is massive (1981). The wind is light and offshore from the NNW, which is a major positive. This would be a clean, powerful wave, but I gotta flag it: at that size, over 8ft, this is strictly for the experts. The paddle out will be a mission, and it’s going to be a heavy drop. The water temp is sitting at a comfortable 68°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year.
The afternoon of the same day is also a standout, with a 10ft swell from the NNW and still favorable offshore winds. It’s slightly smaller, but still a beast. The week before that, from the 20th to the 28th, we get some moderate energy, but it’s all blown out by cross-onshore winds, so it’ll be lumpy and messy. Not worth paddling out for.
So, to sum it up: you’ve got a long, flat, and choppy wait. The one and only real shot is that Friday morning session for the big-wave crew. Don’t even bother before that.
