The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Pontal do Peba.
Honestly, mate, the outlook for the next 16 days is a pretty grim one. We're facing a real dry spell. The water is sitting at a warm 80°, which is about average for this time of year, but that's about the only thing that's average. The wave energy is weak for the first few days, with a reading of 92 on the 14th, and it just doesn't get its act together for a proper surf. The wind is a constant problem, and the reports are all saying the same thing: "poor surf conditions." It's a real bummer.
For the first week, from Tuesday the 14th right through to the weekend of the 19th, there's just nothing to get excited about. The swell is onshore, the wind is ruining the shape, and the whole setup looks messy. Thursday the 16th does see a bit of a jump in size, with swell hitting 7ft to 7ft, but it's a short-period, wind-affected mess from the SSE and SE. With a 19 mph onshore wind, this is a beach setup that's going to be a washing machine. Honestly, for a stretch like this, you'd be better off looking at kite surfing than paddle surfing if you're desperate for a fix, because the waves just aren't rideable for a surfer.
After that, the swell drops a bit, but the wind stays onshore. From Monday the 21st through to the end of the month, the pattern is more of the same: onshore wind, short-period swell, and consistent "poor" labels. The combined energy does get moderate, like 642 on the 20th and 466 on the 21st, but it's all for nothing with the wind direction.
Now, there is a glimmer of something in the very long range, but it's a real "wait and see" situation. On the 28th and 29th of July, we see a long-period groundswell showing up. The period jumps to 15 and 18 seconds, and the combined energy spikes to over 1000, with a reading of 1220 on the morning of the 29th. That's a lot of energy for a 4ft swell, meaning it's going to be a powerful, clean groundswell. But the catch is, the wind is still cross-on and from the ESE. For a beach break, a long-period swell like that with a cross-on wind is a recipe for close-outs and a very tricky paddle. If you're an expert with a boat, it might be a different story, but for the average surfer, it's still a no-go. The forecast is far out, so the promise is there, but the certainty is not.
So, to sum it up: there are no standouts in the next 16 days. The wind is the enemy, and the size is rarely in the right direction. This is a blank run for the area, and it might just be a good time to wax the longboard and wait for the forecasts to change.
Rusty.
