The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the table for Ponta dos Castelhanos over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a slow start and a long wait for anything decent.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a rough patch. From the 4th of August right through to the 17th, the surf is pretty much a write-off. We’re looking at a solid 14-day gap where the conditions are just not cooperating. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the waves are mostly poor.
Things get a little interesting around the 18th of August. Tuesday morning is the first real glimmer of hope. We’ve got a 3 ft swell rolling in from the SE, with a period of 14 seconds. That’s a long period groundswell, which means proper energy and shape. The wind is a light offshore from the NNE, making things clean. The combined energy is solid at 364 (moderate wave energy). The water temperature is sitting at 74°F, which is about average for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
Ponta dos Castelhanos is a beginner spot, exposed to the S swell. The 3 ft is perfect for learning, nothing too intimidating. It’s inconsistent though, so don’t expect a wave every minute. And with crowds listed as ‘sometimes’, you might have some company, but it shouldn’t be a zoo.
The 19th of August, Wednesday morning, is also worth a mention. Another 3 ft SE swell, but this time the period pushes up to 15 seconds – very long period groundswell. The energy is still strong at 369 (moderate wave energy). The wind is offshore again from the NE, keeping it clean. It’s a bit of a carbon copy of the day before, but that long period means the waves will have some serious push and are best for the points and reefs. For a beginner spot, this longer period might make the sets a bit more powerful and unpredictable, so keep your wits about you.
The best on offer across this whole 16-day window is the Tuesday morning, 18th of August. That’s the standout. Clean, offshore wind, a solid groundswell with good energy, and a manageable size. It’s the one to pencil in, but remember, it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on the forecast as it gets closer.
Rusty.
