The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. We’re looking at Pointe aux Oies for the next couple of weeks, and the truth is, there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. The entire 16-day forecast is a washout for surf.
We start off on Wednesday, August 5th, with a 6 ft swell from the WSW, but a strong 25 mph cross-onshore wind is just tearing it up. The combined swell energy is 247 – that's moderate energy – but with that wind, it’s messy, choppy, and honestly, more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than normal – very unusual for this time of year, so you might feel that.
The next few days only get worse. Thursday the 6th drops to 3 ft with onshore wind, and then it’s all tiny, weak slop. The combined energy falls to 49, then down to 13. We get a brief glassy window on Saturday the 8th morning, but the swell is a measly 0.3 ft – flat as a pancake.
This pattern just keeps repeating. We see a little bump in size on the 13th with 4 ft from the WSW, but that’s met with a 19 mph cross-onshore and a combined energy of 64. It’s lumpy and unrideable. Then on Sunday the 16th, we get a 6 ft to 7 ft pulse from the WSW, with energy jumping to 247 and then 462, but the wind is a fresh breeze onshore or cross-onshore, and the period is short at 6-7 seconds. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine. For a beginner reef break that’s already inconsistent, this is way too big and ugly.
The whole run is just a series of poor surf conditions. There are long gaps – days on end – with nothing even close to a recommendation. The forecast is so bleak that I’d say don’t even bother checking the cam. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s just how it goes sometimes. Hang loose, and let’s hope the forecasts change.
