The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta say, the next couple of weeks are looking like a bit of a mixed bag for us, but there's some real gems hiding in there if you're patient.
The first proper surf worth paddling out for kicks off this Saturday afternoon, the 18th of July. We're looking at a clean, small swell at Point Addis. It's a reef break, consistent, and exposed to the swell. The water temp is sitting at 57°, which is about average for this time of year, so no nasty surprises. The swell is only 3ft from the SW, but the period is a solid 13 seconds – that's a real groundswell. The wind is glassy, coming from the SE at only 3 mph, so the surface will be like a mirror. The combined energy is moderate (250). It's not going to be huge, but it's a classic winter wave, clean and fun. This is a top pick for a relaxed session.
Sunday the 19th through to Tuesday the 21st, the swell drops a touch but stays in the 2ft to 3ft range. The wind turns offshore from the NNW on Sunday morning and holds for most of the period, making for clean, tidy waves. The energy is moderate (170-277). These are good, surfable conditions, but nothing to write home about – just a solid run of small, clean waves for the patient surfer.
Now, pay attention to Wednesday the 22nd of July. The swell is building, but the wind gets messy. By the afternoon, we've got a 5ft SW swell with a short 10-second period, but a strong cross-offshore wind creates a bit of a chop. The energy jumps to strong (551). It's a bit of a scrappy one.
Then Thursday the 23rd of July is the big one. The swell fires up to 13ft from the SW, with a 14-second period. The combined energy is massive (8377). This is a serious, powerful groundswell. However, the wind is a strong cross-shore, 16 mph from the WSW. At 13ft, this is strictly for experts only. The conditions are clean, but the power is immense. It's a standout for the sheer size and energy, but you’ll need to be on your A-game.
The next standout is Friday the 24th of July. The swell drops to a more manageable 6ft from the SSW, with a 15-second period (1174 energy). The wind is offshore from the WNW at 12 mph. This is a classic, clean, powerful winter swell. It's excellent for experienced surfers, and the long period will make for some great, long walls at this reef break. This is another top pick.
The surf then settles into a nice run through the weekend and into the start of the following week. The swell sits around 5ft to 6ft, with clean conditions and offshore winds. The energy is moderate to strong (772-975). It's a solid, consistent run of good surf.
Tuesday the 28th of July sees another pulse of energy, with a 7ft to 8ft SSW swell arriving. The wind is fresh and offshore, making for a powerful, clean session. The energy is very strong (1931-2791). This is a good one for the experienced crew.
We then get a run of clean, smaller waves through to the end of the month before a big, windy, and messy period hits at the start of August. The winds turn strong onshore, and the swell gets chopped up. It's a write-off from the 31st of July through to the 1st of August.
The window closes on Sunday the 2nd of August. The wind turns light and cross-offshore, with a 4ft, 17-second period groundswell from the SW. The energy is moderate (648). It's a clean, promising end to the forecast, but it's a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
The real standouts are the glassy, small swell this Saturday and the big, powerful, clean swell on Friday the 24th.
Rusty.
