The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Point Addis over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of clean, powerful surf kicking off this Thursday morning, July 16. The swell is a proper 6ft from the SSW with a long 15-second period, and the energy is cranking (1692). That’s a serious groundswell – it’ll be a bit too big for beginners, but for experienced surfers it’s a standout. The only catch is a light cross-offshore breeze making it a little bumpy, but still very rideable. Thursday afternoon drops a touch to 6ft, but the wind swings cross-on, so that window is less appealing.
The real gem lands on Friday morning, July 17. We’ve got a clean 5ft SW groundswell at 16 seconds, with a nice NW offshore breeze. That’s the pick of the first week – glassy conditions, plenty of power, and the swell direction is just about spot on for this reef. Friday afternoon goes dead glassy with 5ft SW, perfect for a late session.
Saturday July 18 is still clean but the swell winds down to 3ft in the morning with a glassy afternoon. Fun for a longboard, but not the same energy. Sunday July 19 drops to barely 2ft – small and ordinary.
From Monday July 20 through to Wednesday July 22, we’ve got tiny surf with offshore winds, but it’s mostly 2ft to 3ft. Not worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate for a trim.
Things pick up again on Thursday July 23 with 3ft to 3ft SW swell and clean offshore breezes – still small, but clean.
Now, keep an eye on Friday July 24. The swell jumps back to 5ft SW with a 15-second period, and a fresh 35 km/h offshore wind. The energy is ramping up again (1020), but that wind is strong – it’ll be clean but challenging. Friday afternoon sees 8ft SW (3437 energy) – that’s a serious jump and only for experts. The wind is cross-offshore, so it’s not perfect.
Saturday July 25 and Sunday July 26 are messy with strong cross-shore winds and choppy conditions. The swell hangs around 5ft to 6ft, but the quality is poor. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Monday July 27 brings a nice change: 5ft SSW groundswell with a gentle offshore breeze. Clean and punchy. That’s a solid option for experienced surfers. Tuesday July 28 fades a bit, with 5ft to 5ft SW but stronger cross-offshore winds.
The final standout is Wednesday July 29 afternoon: 4ft SW with a 13-second period and a light offshore breeze. Clean and fun, with good energy (504). Thursday July 30 and Friday July 31 drop off again into small, choppy or messy conditions.
Best on offer: Friday July 17 morning – 5ft SW, 16-second period, light offshore, glassy. And Monday July 27 morning – 5ft SSW, 13 seconds, clean offshore. Both are for experienced surfers, but the quality is worth the paddle.
Crowds can be an issue at Point Addis at times, so if you see a lineup, don’t be surprised.
Rusty.
