The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Playa San Pedro has cookin’ for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the first several days are a bit of a flat and choppy mess. We’ve got a long gap of poor conditions from Wednesday the 15th all the way through until Saturday the 18th. There’s just no real punch in the water – small windswell and cross-onshore junk. Not worth paddlin’ out for.
Then, on Saturday the 18th, things finally wake up. The afternoon brings a solid jump in size: 7ft of SW swell, and that period is a juicy 16 seconds – proper groundswell. The combined energy hits a strong 1305, so you’ll feel the ocean has some real grunt. The wind goes light cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy but rideable. This is a standout if you can handle some size; it’s gettin’ big enough that beginners might want to sit this one out. The water is way warmer than usual for this time of year, sittin’ at a toasty 84°.
Sunday the 19th drops back a notch with 5ft from the SW, period around 12 seconds, and moderate energy at 590. Wind is still cross-onshore, fairly choppy. Not the cleanest but there’s waves.
Monday the 20th afternoon gets interesting again: 4ft of SW swell, but the period jumps right back to 16 seconds, with energy at 829. Light onshore wind, so it could be a bit soft.
The real standout for the whole window though, if you’ve got the cojones, is Thursday the 23rd afternoon and Friday the 24th. Thursday afternoon sees 8ft of SW groundswell at 13 seconds – that’s over 8ft and into expert-only territory. Combined energy is a massive 1777. Wind is gentle cross-onshore, so it’ll be choppy but powerful. Friday morning holds 7ft, energy at 1518, but the wind picks up to a moderate cross-onshore, makin’ it messy. Friday afternoon drops to 6ft but stays bumpy with cross-shore winds. If you’re an experienced charger, Thursday arvo is the pick of the whole forecast.
The last week tails off again into smaller, weaker swell with onshore winds.
Overall, if you’re after the best, hit Saturday the 18th afternoon for the first proper swell, or strap in for Thursday the 23rd afternoon if you want some serious power. Keep an eye on the wind – it’s never perfectly clean, but there’s grunt to be had.
