The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the outlook for Playa Los Cerritos. It’s a beach and point setup that’s best for beginners, and it’s fairly consistent with a bit of an E offshore. The water is sitting at 85°F, which is a good two degrees warmer than usual for this time of year – proper tropical bath water.
To be honest, the first week or so is a bit of a slow burn. We’ve got tiny waves rolling in, around 2ft to 4ft from the SW and SSW, but the winds are mostly cross-on or onshore. It’s not doing us any favours. There’s a little glimmer on Sunday the 9th in the afternoon – the wind goes glassy, calm. But the swell is only 3ft, so it’s more of a cleanup job than a standout session.
The real lift doesn’t come until Friday the 14th of August. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the SSW, and the period is a cracking 18 seconds – that’s proper groundswell with some real punch. The waves will have a nice shape to them, but that long period means they might be a bit straight at this beach-and-point setup. Keep in mind that 5ft is still manageable for most, but it’s a step up from the dribble we’ve had.
The wind on that Friday morning is on, but it’s only a light breeze at 6 mph which is fine. The afternoon is a cross-on breeze, but again light. This is the best of the bunch. If you want a window, Saturday the 15th is similar in size but the wind picks up to a gentle breeze and it gets choppy, so the Friday is the one to aim for. After that, the swell drops back to smaller sizes again.
Basically, if you’re patient, there’s a little window around the 14th where the energy is on. Nothing here is screaming epic, but that Friday morning has the best chance of a decent wave.
Rusty.
