The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at Fletcher Cove Park.
It’s a bit of a slow start, and honestly, the whole first week is pretty quiet. For most of the coming days, we’re looking at very small swell around 2ft to 3ft, with a moderate combined energy that mostly sits between 228 and 475. That’s weak to moderate energy at best. The swell is coming from the SSW, but it's not got any real push. The winds are mostly light and offshore or cross-onshore, but the wave comment keeps telling us it’s “poor surf conditions” or “marginal” right through. It’s pretty frustrating for the first week or so. There’s nothing really worth paddling out for until we get toward the end of the month.
Now, for Wednesday morning on the 28th of August, we start to see a bit more life. The swell bumps up to 2ft from the SSW with a very long period of 21 seconds. That's a proper groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 655, which is moderate to strong. The wind is cross-onshore and gentle, so it’ll be a little bumpy. It’s still a marginal call, but it’s the first time the energy has really shown its teeth.
But the real standout – and the only one I’m getting excited about – is the Saturday and Sunday of the 29th and 30th of August. On Saturday the 29th, we’ve got 4ft of SSW swell, with a period of 18 seconds. The combined energy hits 1139, which is strong wave energy. Winds on Saturday afternoon are light and offshore, which will give you clean, lined-up waves. Sunday the 30th is similar: 5ft of SSW swell in the morning, period of 16 seconds, and combined energy of 1025. Winds are light cross-onshore, so it’s still going to be pretty clean. This is the best on offer by a long shot.
A couple of things: the swell is right around the 4ft to 5ft mark, so it’s manageable for most surfers. It’s not too big for beginners, but it’s not tiny either. The period is over 15 seconds, so it’s a long-period groundswell. At a reef break like Fletcher Cove Park, that’s a good thing – it’ll wrap in nicely and give you some proper shape. The optimum swell direction for this spot is SW, and we’re getting SSW, so it’s not a perfect match, but it’s close enough to work. The crowds here are marked as “often,” so expect some company.
For the second week, the surf stays in that 2ft to 3ft range with a mix of SW and SSW swell, but the energy drops back to moderate. Nothing else stands out as a true highlight.
Oh, and on the water temp: on the 17th of August it was 72°F, which is 4°F warmer than average. That’s notably warm for the time of year.
So, bottom line: the first week is a washout, but the last weekend of August is the one to circle. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th look like your best chance at some proper, clean waves at Fletcher Cove Park.
Rusty.
