The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for the local outlook.
Well, to be honest, it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead for the next 16 days. We’re looking at Perelle Bay, a reef setup that’s inconsistent and really only for the advanced crew. The water’s running a touch warmer than normal for the time of year here, sitting at 63°, which is a bit of a novelty but not much else to get excited about.
Right now, and through the first week, the story is tiny. We’re talking ankle-snappers to knee-high at best, with swell heights barely scraping 1ft. The combined energy is weak, coming in at just 33. That’s not enough to push a leaf. Winds are mostly cross or cross-off from the ENE and NE, with a fresh breeze blowing on Wednesday morning, but the swell is just too small to bother with. A bit of glassy calm shows up on the morning of Monday the 20th, but with only 0.7ft on the cards, it’s a flat spell, not a surf session.
We then hit a long gap of several days with no real surf. The swell direction tries to shift to the WNW around the 21st, but we’re still stuck with tiny, 1ft waves and weak energy. It’s a waiting game.
The only real standout – and I use that word lightly – lands on the morning of Thursday, 30th July. We finally see a bump of swell from the W, pushing 5ft, and the combined energy climbs to 158, which is moderate. The catch? The period is a short, snappy 6 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit crumbly and disorganised. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’ll be a little bumpy, but for the first time in two weeks, there’s actually some water moving. It’s not a gem, but it’s the only thing on the menu. For experienced surfers only, as it’s still a shallow reef, and the crowds are possible here.
Honestly, with the poor quality and consistent small swell, it’s looking more like a kiting spot than a paddling one for the majority of this period. The setup is a beach-and-reef mix, and with the wind and weak swell, a kite would have a much better time of it.
Rusty.
