The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s look at that same Pennington Bay outlook in feet and miles per hour.
The first real surfable action hits this Sunday morning, 23 August. We’ve got a solid S swell running at about 6.6 ft, with a long period of 17 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, full of energy. The wind is a light 6.2 mph cross-off from the N, keeping things clean. The combined energy is strong to very strong (3070). The water temp is 58.5°, which is about average for this time of year. This one’s for experienced surfers – if you’re a beginner, it’s a bit much.
Sunday afternoon stays solid with the swell dropping just a touch to 6.2 ft, still S at 16 seconds, and the wind shifts to a gentle offshore 9.3 mph from the N. Conditions are clean and the energy is still strong (1834). A solid day.
Monday morning, 24 August, we see a drop to 3.9 ft, but the S swell is still hanging around with a 14-second period. The wind is a gentle offshore from the NE at 9.3 mph, so it’s clean. The combined energy is moderate (589). A smaller, more manageable day. Monday afternoon, the wind picks up to 15.5 mph cross-off from the NE, and the swell drops further to 3.6 ft. The energy drops to 519. It’s marginal.
Tuesday, 25 August, is a write-off. Strong onshore winds from the SSW at 15.5-18.6 mph, and the swell jumps to 7.9 ft, but it’s blown out. The energy is strong (3560), but quality is poor.
Wednesday, 26 August, is a nice return. The morning has a 4.6 ft SSW swell with a 13-second period and a light cross-off breeze from the NW. The energy is moderate (700). It’s clean. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 3.9 ft, still clean.
Thursday, 27 August, starts smaller with a 3.3 ft S swell but a 14-second period. The wind is cross-off from the NNW, keeping it clean. Thursday afternoon, the swell direction shifts to SSW with a massive 20-second period. The swell size is 4.6 ft, and the energy jumps to 1886. The wind is a light cross-shore from the WNW, so it’s clean. That long period will be better at a point or reef.
Friday, 28 August, is a no-go. Onshore winds from the S at 9.3-12.4 mph, with a 6.2 ft swell that’s messy.
Saturday, 29 August, is also poor. Onshore and cross-onshore winds, small swell, choppy.
Now, the standout. Sunday, 30 August. The morning is glassy – a 3.1 mph wind from the S, leaving the surface like a mirror. The swell is 8.2 ft from the S with an 18-second period. The energy is huge (4689). This is a serious, powerful groundswell for experienced surfers only. The afternoon is even bigger at 9.8 ft, S, 17 seconds, with a 6.2 mph offshore from the NNE. The energy is massive (5198). Circle this day.
Monday, 31 August, the swell drops to 6.9 ft, still S with a 16-second period, but the wind picks up to 15.5 mph cross-off from the NNW. The energy is 2287. Clean but a bit bumpy.
Tuesday, 1 September, the wind turns onshore from the WSW and SW. Not good.
Wednesday, 2 September, small swell and cross-off winds, marginal.
Thursday, 3 September, is another big day. The swell is 8.2 ft from the S with a 15-second period, and the energy is 2906. The wind is a cross-shore from the W at 12.4 mph, creating a bit of a cross-chop. Marginal but possible for the experienced.
Friday, 4 September, is a great follow-up. The swell is 7.5 ft from the S, 17 seconds, with a moderate offshore wind from the N at 15.5 mph. The energy is 3125. Clean and solid. Another for experienced surfers.
Saturday, 5 September, is onshore again. Poor.
Sunday, 6 September, we get a recovery. The morning has a
