The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks for Pennington Bay.
We’ve got a solid run of surf kicking off, but it’s not for the faint of heart. This is a stretch of clean, powerful groundswell that’s going to have the experienced crew grinning from ear to ear. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The standout action starts Wednesday, July 15, and runs through to Friday, July 17. Wednesday morning you’ll find a clean 7 ft swell from the S with a very long period of 15 seconds and a light cross-off wind. The energy is pumping (1881), and it’s excellent but only for experienced surfers. By Wednesday afternoon it goes glassy - 6 ft, same S direction, and the wind is dead calm. That’s the kind of session you remember.
Thursday, July 16, is the pick of the whole run. Morning has 7 ft S swell, 15 seconds, and a clean offshore N wind at 9 mph. The combined energy is massive (2052). Thursday afternoon is even bigger at 7 ft with a 16-second period and more clean offshore wind (2178 energy). This is premium, powerful groundswell, and it’s going to be best at the reef or point sections - the long period will make it wall up nicely.
Friday, July 17, holds onto that quality. Morning has 6 ft S swell, 16 seconds, and clean offshore wind. It’s still excellent for experienced surfers. Friday afternoon drops to 5 ft but stays clean and very good.
After that, the swell drops. Saturday, July 18, has a much smaller 3 ft SSW swell. It’s clean with offshore wind, but the energy is weak (395). It’s a beginner-friendly size, though.
Then we hit a long gap. From Sunday, July 19, all the way through to Sunday, July 26, the surf is marginal at best. The swell is small, below 4 ft, and the winds are messy - mostly cross-off or cross-on, with some onshore. The energy stays low (usually under 600). There’s a brief spike on the 23rd and 24th with 8 ft swell, but it’s plagued by cross-on wind and choppy conditions. That’s a kite-surfing setup, not a paddle one.
The surf returns on Monday, July 27. The morning session looks very good again: 4 ft S swell, 14 seconds, and glassy conditions. The energy is moderate (764). It’s a much smaller wave than the first week, but it’s clean and workable. That sets up a few more days of small, clean swell through the 29th, with another glassy morning on Wednesday, July 29, offering 4 ft from the S at 15 seconds (816 energy). It’s a nice way to finish the window if you’re on a longboard or a fish.
Bottom line: the first week is the real deal for experienced surfers. The second week is a big come-down, but there are a couple of glassy mornings to scratch an itch.
Rusty.
