The Lowdown

Alright, gather 'round. Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Pendorcho are a tough pill to swallow. We’ve got a serious lack of any real, rideable swell on the cards. It’s one of those stretches where the charts just look flat and uninspiring. The water’s sitting a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 55°F, but that’s about the only bright spot.

Starting out now, through the middle of the month and well into the following week, it’s a desert. There’s nothing doing. We see a few tiny bumps, 1ft to 2ft, but the wind is a constant problem – cross-off, cross-on, it’s all messy and weak. The energy is barely registering, which is just flatland stuff. Thursday the 17th morning offers a clean 3ft from the SSE, but with a period of only 9 seconds, it’s a lifeless, ordinary wave. Not worth paddling out for.

We get a brief moment of calm on Sunday the 20th morning – glassy conditions, 2ft from the east, period of 8 seconds. It’s ridable, but it’s tiny and the crowd factor is a niggling worry – that `sometimes` crowd label means you probably won’t be alone for these scraps. Monday the 21st morning is similar, clean 2ft from the east. Again, small and ordinary.

The real kicker comes late in the window. Thursday the 28th morning, we see a spike in energy hitting 578, with a 4ft swell from the SSE and a 13-second period. That’s a proper long-period groundswell heading our way. Here’s the problem: the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. The wave quality is described as poor. This is a classic case of a setup that looks far better for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing. The swell has some punch, but the conditions are blown out.

Similarly, Friday the 29th sees some leftover energy but it’s the same story – fresh cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The whole forecast is a battle between a bit of swell and bad wind.

In short, there is no standout period. The best of a bad bunch is that brief window around Sunday the 20th and Monday the 21st mornings – small, clean, and ordinary. Don’t get your hopes up.

Rusty.
