The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here with the long-range look for the Bay of Plenty.

Look, I’m not gonna beat around the bush – the next week and a half is a bit of a tough slog for surfers around here. There’s a lot of flat, or near-flat, days on the horizon. We’ve got a solid stretch from now until at least the 9th of August that’s just not worth paddling out for, with tiny, poor-condition waves and energy readings as low as 14. It’s a proper gap.

The main show, the only real glimmer of hope, kicks off on the 11th of August and builds through the middle of the month. The standout is Maketu Bar (Maketu-Bar). Now, this is a point break, and it’s an inconsistent setup, so when it comes alive, you gotta be on it.

The first session that gets my blood pumping is the afternoon of the 11th. The swell is a north 5ft with a period of 9 seconds, pushing an energy reading of 323. But the kicker? We’ve got a light, cross-offshore breeze from the SE. That is going to be clean. It’s a solid beginner to intermediate size, and the forecast actually says "expect good surf conditions". That’s the one to aim for.

The following morning on the 12th is still surfable but more ordinary with a 4ft north-northeast swell. The real stand-out, though, is the morning of the 14th of August. That’s a glassy session, with a 6ft north swell and a beefy energy reading of 674. Clean, glassy, and a decent size – that’s a morning for the experienced intermediate crew to have some fun on the bar. The afternoon looks too big and questionable, though.

After that, it really drops off again through the 16th and beyond, with only tiny leftover bumps. So, there’s not much on the menu, but if you’re patient, that window from the afternoon of the 11th through to the morning of the 14th is your best bet. Don’t hold your breath for the rest of it.

Stay patient,
Rusty
