The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s be straight – I’ve scanned this 16‑day window for the region around Les Dunes and, honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. Every single session from Wednesday 15 July right through to Thursday 30 July is rated as poor surf with a score of zero. That’s a full two‑week blank run for a break that’s usually fairly consistent, so it stings.
The water temperature on that first Wednesday afternoon is sitting at 71°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s unusual, almost like the ocean’s having a summer fever, but it doesn’t do a thing for the waves.
Les Dunes is a beginner spot, exposed to WSW swells, but what we’re seeing is tiny, weak, disorganised junk. Swell heights barely touch 4 ft on Friday morning (17 July) but it’s period 5 seconds – pure wind slop. Combined wave energy peaks at a measly 83 (moderate energy on paper, but with that period it’s all chop). Winds are mostly cross‑onshore or straight onshore, making a mess of even the smallest bumps. A few mornings go glassy (like Saturday 18 July morning) but the swell is only 0.7 ft – not enough to stand up on.
There’s one stretch from Sunday 19 July afternoon into Tuesday 21 July where the wind turns offshore or cross‑off, and the water goes clean, but again the swell is a pathetic 0.7 ft with energy in the single digits. You’d be floating, not surfing. Even the long‑period stuff (14 seconds on 24 July Friday afternoon) delivers just 0.3 ft – a groundswell that’s too small to feel.
By the end of the window, around 28–30 July, a slight uptick to 3 ft–3 ft shows up, but period drops to 4–5 seconds and the wind stays messy. Still poor. For a beginner break that needs some size and clean conditions, this is a write‑off.
So what can I say? It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. Forecasts can change, but right now there’s not a single session I’d recommend. Hang the board up, maybe check back in a week. – Rusty
