Gather ‘round, crew. Rusty here. Lookin’ at the cards for the next couple weeks, and I gotta be straight with ya – it’s a tough stretch for the local sandbar. We’ve got one spot on the radar, but there’s a big ol’ gap of nothing before we even get started, and then it’s a long, long wait for any kind of real energy.
Let’s start with the first sniff of a rideable wave. That doesn’t pop up until Sunday, July 13th, on the morning. The first few days are a total write-off – Saturday the 11th and the first half of Sunday the 12th have next to no swell, just flat, bumpy conditions. So we’re staring at a few days of downtime right off the bat.
Alright, for the first real suggestion, we head to Les Dunes. On Sunday morning the 13th, we might see a tiny 0.2m (that’s about 0.7 ft) ripple out of the WSW, but with the wind coming from the W, it’s a light cross-on breeze. The energy is weak (8), and frankly, it’ll be frustrating. By Monday the 14th, we get a slight lift with a 0.5m (2 ft) swell from the W, but the wind swings to the WSW, making it messy. The water’s running at 70°F – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the wait won’t be chilly.
The pattern stays stubborn. Through the rest of July, every reading is marked as poor surf conditions. The swell tries to build a little – by Saturday the 19th we see 0.8m (3 ft) from the W, but it’s short period (6 seconds) and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on from the WNW, keeping it chopped up. The energy stays low, barely hitting 50 (50). It’s just not shaping up. For the beginner crew, the swell never even approaches 1.5m (5 ft), so it’s not too big for you – it’s just not good enough.
Then it gets interesting around Wednesday the 22nd. The afternoon shows a spike in combined energy to 169, with a 0.8m (3 ft) swell from the WNW. The period is a middling 10 seconds. But here’s the kicker – the wind is a fresh 35 km/h (22 mph) cross-on from the W. That’s strong, lumpy wind. For a beach setup like Les Dunes, that’s not a surfer’s friend. Honestly, at that point, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s a onshore, bumpy mess.
There are no true standouts in this forecast. If we had to pick the least bad bet, I’d point to Wednesday morning, July 15th. It’s a small 0.3m (1.0 ft) swell from the W with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is a gentle 15 km/h (9 mph) cross-off from the N. The report says it’s clean. That’s the best window we get – a clean, tiny wave. The energy is low (32), but at least it won’t be a washing machine. For a total beginner, it’s about all that’s on offer.
But look, with the area only having this one break, and it being fairly consistent but delivering such poor quality for so long, this is a normal dry spell for these parts. It’s a blank run that can happen. Don’t lose hope – forecasts can shift.
Stay patient. Rusty out.
