The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Les Dunes over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – the first week or so is a tough stretch. There’s a real dry spell with next to nothing worth paddling out for until we get closer to the end of August. Then the energy ramps up, but it gets too wild for this spot. Here’s the full run.

We kick off Monday the 17th of August with a tiny 2 ft swell from the NW at a short 7 seconds, early morning has a clean cross-off breeze, but the wave energy is weak at just 46. It’s poor surf conditions, and that sets the tone. The next several days are brutally small – Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th have scraps of 1.0 ft to 2 ft, with messy cross-onshore winds in the afternoons. Thursday 20th morning shows a slight uptick: 3 ft from the WNW at 9 seconds, combined energy climbs to 145 which is moderate, and with a light NNW breeze it’s clean. But the waves are described as surfable but very ordinary. Honestly, not worth getting excited about. Friday 21st has 3 ft in the morning but with a cross wind, and it’s still poor. Saturday 22nd has a tiny 1 ft with an offshore breeze in the morning, but the energy is only 47. Sunday 23rd morning has similar small 1 ft, ENE wind cross-off, still poor. The whole run from Monday through to Wednesday 26th is a gap of almost no recommendations – just tiny, weak swell and often poor conditions.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. Thursday morning, 27th August, we finally see something with real potential. The swell jumps to 4 ft from the west with an 8-second period, combined energy hits 209 – that’s moderate wave energy. The wind is light from the north, cross-off, so it’s clean. The forecast note says wind and tide are favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. That’s a real shame. Afternoon gets messy with a 6 ft swell and cross wind.

Friday 28th August morning: 7 ft from the west, period 8 seconds, massive combined energy of 692 (strong). The water temp is about average for the time of year at 70°, no real anomaly. A light westerly cross-on breeze, but again the note says too big for this break. This is getting heavy. By Saturday 29th, the swell peaks at 13 ft from the west with a very long 12-second period, energy is a massive 6949 – very strong wave energy. This is for experts only, and even then, with a cross-on wind, it’s messy. It’s too big for Les Dunes, and honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Into Sunday 30th August, still big with 6 ft in the morning, energy 544, but again too big for the break. Monday 31st and into September, the swell remains over 7 ft with strong winds and cross-onshore conditions, all marked as poor.

The single standout in this entire outlook is Thursday 27th August morning – the first real, clean, moderate swell we see. But it’s a bitter pill because it’s already too big for Les Dunes. If you’re a beginner or intermediate, there’s nothing on offer here in the 16-day window. The swell that eventually shows is just too powerful for this spot.

Rusty.
