The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Les Dunes over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a pretty bleak start. We're looking at a solid run of poor surf conditions right through the end of July. The first week and a half are a write-off, with nothing but tiny, weak, and choppy waves. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the swell is just too small to do anything with. You're looking at wave heights barely reaching 1 ft to 3 ft, with periods as short as 4 to 5 seconds, meaning no power or shape. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting in the low double digits (22 to 63) for most of that time. It's a real struggle.
We finally see a glimmer of hope around Thursday, July 24th, but it's a cruel tease. The swell picks up to 5 ft to 5 ft from the WNW, with a period of 6 seconds, and the energy jumps to a moderate 203. But the wind is straight onshore, making it a messy, blown-out situation. Not worth paddling out.
Then, a real standout appears on Saturday, July 25th. The morning session is the best bet by far. The wind is offshore from the ENE, which is perfect for Les Dunes, and it's only a light breeze, so the face will be clean. The swell is a solid 4 ft from the WNW, with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is a moderate 176. The code says the wind and tide are favorable, but the swell is predicted to be a bit too big for this break. For a beginner spot, this is pushing the limits, so it's for the more experienced crew on a log or a funboard. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
The following week looks hit-and-miss. There's a bit of energy around, but the wind is never quite right. The morning of Wednesday, July 29th, has another potential standout with a 5 ft swell from the WSW and a 10-second period, giving us a strong 463 combined energy. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNW. Again, the same warning: it's predicted to be too big for this break. That's a lot of water moving around for a beginner-friendly spot, so only experts should even consider it. After that, the wind turns onshore again, and the quality drops right off.
To sum it up: there's basically nothing to ride for the first 10 days. The two best chances are the mornings of Saturday, July 25th, and Wednesday, July 29th, but both are on the bigger side for Les Dunes, so keep your expectations in check. For everything else, you're better off checking the forecast again next week.
Rusty.
