The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've had a good look at the charts for Les Dunes, and to be honest, it's a pretty grim run for the next couple of weeks. For a spot that's described as "fairly consistent," this is a real dry spell. We're looking at a solid gap with no good surf until the 26th of August, so just over a week of waiting.
The water temperature is sitting at 70°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so at least a paddle won't be a shock to the system.
We finally get a bit of a glimmer on Wednesday the 26th of August. The morning is a write-off, but by Wednesday afternoon, the wind swings to a light offshore from the north, which will clean things right up. The problem is the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. We're looking at a 5ft swell from the west-northwest with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 277. It's a real shame the wind is right, but the size is just too much for this break.
The next real opportunity is a long way off. On the 2nd of September, Wednesday morning, we get a clean, glassy morning with a light north-northwest cross-offshore breeze. The swell is 5ft from the west-southwest, period 8 seconds, and the energy is moderate at 232. Again, the system says it's too big for the break, so it's a bit of a tease.
Then, the 3rd and 4th of September are the standout days in the whole forecast. On Thursday the 3rd, we have clean offshore winds from the north-northeast all day, with a solid 6ft west-southwest swell. The energy is a chunky 337. On Friday the 4th, it's the same story: offshore winds from the east-northeast, a 7ft swell from the west-northwest, and the energy jumps up to a strong 862. Both days get the "wind and tide favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break" warning. For a beginner-friendly spot, 6ft to 7ft is pushing it, and for a beach break, that's expert territory. The wind will be perfect, but the size will be a handful for anyone but the most experienced.
So, if you're a beginner, there's really nothing on the cards for the next 16 days. The forecasts are a long way out for that early September window, so keep an eye on it, but don't hold your breath. For now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
