The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Les Dunes. Honestly, for the next week and a half, it’s pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak, poorly-angled swell and a lot of onshore or cross-shore wind messing things up. You’re looking at over a week of next to nothing. The best window I can see is right at the very end of the run, but it’s a long way off.
Starting off, there’s just nothing to get excited about through the rest of July and into the first few days of August. We’ve got a long, frustrating gap with hardly any rideable waves. The swell is tiny, often below 2 feet, and the period is short, so there’s no push. Wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, creating chop.
For the 26th, there’s a bit of a bump in the swell – up to 5 feet – but that’s coming with a cross-onshore breeze and a combined swell energy of only moderate strength (225). The conditions will be lumpy and choppy, not a clean paddle session. A bit too big for beginners, but the quality is poor, so honestly, this looks more like a kite-surfing setup than a proper surf day.
Now, let’s talk about a real tease. On the morning of the 27th of July, things finally line up. Les Dunes will see a clean, glassy surface with light winds. The swell is 3 feet from the WNW, with a combined energy of 131 (moderate). The water temp is a very unusual 71°F, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year – a real bonus. It’s a proper little window of opportunity, a genuine standout in an otherwise bleak run. But don’t get too excited, because the afternoon turns to junk again.
After that, the forecast drops back into small, weak waves and onshore wind for the next few days. The final date that pokes its head up is the morning of the 31st of July. We’ve got a 3 feet swell from the west, but with a fresh cross-onshore wind and moderate energy (170). It’ll be lumpy and hard to surf cleanly. It’s promising that there’s some energy, but with that wind, it’s not a certainty.
So, the true standout here, the one to pencil in, is the morning of the 27th of July. Get on it early, because it’s the only clean, glassy, and rideable window in the entire outlook.
Rusty.
