The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. To be blunt, it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead for Les Dunes. The forecast shows a whole lot of nothing much for the first week and a bit, with only a couple of fleeting windows that might just about be worth a paddle. The real action, if you can call it that, is hiding way out in the second week.
Alright, for Saturday the 22nd, there’s a tiny window first thing. We’ve got a clean little 3ft swell from the WNW, with a light Easterly breeze keeping it cross-offshore. Energy is weak though, sitting at only 90 (combined swell energy). It’s surfable, but ordinary is the word. The water temp is about average for the time of year at 70°F.
Then we hit a big dry spell. From Saturday afternoon right through until Wednesday the 26th, there’s nothing doing. The 26th offers a similar story to the Saturday before – a clean 3ft WSW swell, light ESE winds, but still just that weak energy of 67. It’s a desperate pick.
Now, things get a bit more interesting, but it’s for experts only. On Thursday the 3rd of September, there’s a big pulse of swell predicted. We’re looking at an 8ft WSW groundswell (period 8 seconds) on the morning, building to 10ft later. The combined swell energy is strong, hitting 953 and then 1135. But a word of warning: the report straight up says it’s too big for this break. The wind looks light though, with a slight cross-offshore breeze on the Thursday afternoon. This is definitely not for beginners, only experienced surfers who know the spot well. Friday the 4th of September still has some size, with a 5ft swell and light offshore winds in the morning, but again, the report flags it as too big for the break.
So, the standout here? Honestly, there isn’t a truly classic day. For the patient and the early riser, Saturday the 22nd morning is your best early bet for a clean if small wave. For the big-wave crew, Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September are the only times the ocean has any real punch, but you have to be an expert and know the risks.
Signing off, Rusty.
