Alright mates, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's happening on our doorstep.
Staring at the charts, it’s a pretty slow 16 days ahead. The swell is small and the wind gods aren’t playing nice. There are a couple of moments where you might get a wave, but there are no proper standouts to get excited about. The water temp is running about 71°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – feels more like a tropical vacation.
We start off on Friday, July 3rd in the morning. That’s your best bet right now at Les Dunes. We’ve got a small 3ft swell coming from the WNW with a 10-second period. The wind is light out of the north, a nice cross-offshore, keeping things clean. The combined energy is moderate (191). It’s rideable, but nothing special. Don't bother with the afternoon as the wind turns onshore.
After that, things go quiet. From Sunday the 5th afternoon all the way through the middle of the month, it’s mostly tiny waves (1ft to 2ft) and rubbish winds. The energy numbers drop into the weak double digits (like 20 or 30). A proper flat spell.
Around Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th, the swell tries to lift a bit, with some 3ft to 4ft pulses from the west and a longer 12-second period. That longer period means more power between sets, but the wind is all over the place – strong cross-shore and cross-onshore – making it a choppy mess. The energy gets up to a moderate 358, but it’s wasted.
The best of a bad bunch might be Wednesday the 15th morning. The swell drops back to 3ft from the WNW, but the wind swings light from the north, giving us clean conditions again. Energy is moderate (118). It’s your last real shot at a few tidy small waves before the wind messes it up again.
Late in the run, we get some waist-high, messy swell pushed in by strong onshore winds. That’s kite-surfing territory, not for the paddle crew.
A lean few weeks, everyone. Keep your eyes peeled because it never stays flat for long around here.
Rusty.
