The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, let’s switch to the old system.
It’s a slow, flat start for the first week or so. From July 13th all the way through July 25th, the surf is just not there. Tiny little waves, hardly any energy, and a lot of onshore wind making it choppy and ugly. The swell energy is weak, under 100 (often just 20-50), and the few waves we get are small, short-period, and sloppy. Don’t bother.
The first real chance of a surf is on Sunday, July 26th. The morning session at Les Dunes is the pick of the whole forecast. We’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the west, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s solid groundswell. The combined energy jumps up to 279 (moderate), and with light offshore winds from the NNW, it’s going to be glassy clean. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, at about 71°, so that’s a nice touch. The swell direction isn’t a perfect match for the optimum west-southwest, but the size and clean conditions make it the one to go for. It’s not too big, so it’s good for most.
Then on Tuesday, July 28th, the morning offers another look. The swell is 5ft from the west, with the same energy of 279, but the period is a shorter 8 seconds. Wind is light and cross-offshore from the NNE, keeping it clean. The problem is, the wave comment says this might be a bit too big for the break, so it’s really only for the experienced crew. The afternoon turns into a mess with a strong cross-shore wind, so the window is tight.
The rest of the second week is a mix of chop and cross-shore winds, with a few clean moments but nothing worth changing plans for. The 26th morning is your best bet.
Rusty, out.
