The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down this stretch of surf for Les Dunes.
Honestly, the outlook is a long, slow grind of nothing. The finder is coming up with zero recommendations for the whole 16-day window. The first week and a half is a total bust, and then we get a pulse of energy that’s totally ruined by wind. There’s a gap of about 9 days before we even see a proper wave.
We start off with pathetic, tiny waves. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are offering up ankle-biters around 0.7ft to 1ft from the W and WSW, with a combined energy barely registering (16 to 43). The wind is cross-off or onshore, but it doesn’t matter – there’s no power. Water temp is about average for the season.
Tuesday the 25th is even worse, with a drop to 0.7ft and a period of 11 seconds, but the energy is a measly 18. It’s onshore and flat. This flat spell drags on through the end of August. Wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, which would mess up even the smallest bump.
There’s a big spike in swell from Thursday the 27th of August through Saturday the 29th. The swell jumps to 7ft, then 10ft, with combined energy hitting 1966 on Friday afternoon. That’s a lot of water moving. But the wind is howling onshore – strong breeze to near gale from the SW and WSW. The surf is going to be a total mess. This is not a paddle-surfing setup. With that much swell and that much wind, a beach-and-reef setup like Les Dunes looks more interesting for kite surfing than trying to paddle out.
The swell drops back down through the 30th and 31st, with 5ft to 4ft, but the wind is still onshore or cross-on, keeping it lumpy and choppy. The period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds, so no shape.
By the 1st of September, we’re back to tiny waves below 2ft. The only glimmer of hope comes on Monday the 7th of September, when a 2ft swell from the WNW with a long period of 12 seconds shows up. The combined energy is 130 (moderate), and the wind is light cross-onshore. It’s still not a recommendation, but it’s the first sign of a clean-ish lineup with a little bit of push. The long period means it might be better shaped, but it’s still small.
So, to sum it up: there’s no standout session here. The first week is flat, the middle week is blown out, and the second week is too small. The best you can hope for is a quiet, small wave on the 7th, but don’t get your hopes up. This is a blank run for the area, and it’s just one of those times where the forecast might shift.
Rusty.
