The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest about this stretch. We’re looking at a pretty flat run for the next couple of weeks, so don’t get your hopes up too high. The only break on the radar is Les Dunes, and it’s a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent, but it’s going to be a waiting game.
Right now, and for the first several days through to the end of July, the surf is just not there. We’re talking about tiny, weak waves with poor conditions. The combined swell energy stays low, sitting between 6 and 62 (weak energy) for most of that time. You’ll see some days with clean offshore winds, like Sunday the 20th and Monday the 21st of July, with a light NE breeze and glassy conditions, but the swell is a measly 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft. It’s basically a lake. There’s nothing to ride.
The pattern shifts a little around Monday the 27th of July. The swell starts to build. By Monday morning, we’re seeing 3 ft swell from the WNW with a combined energy of 137 (moderate wave energy). That’s still not great, and the wind is cross-shore, making it lumpy. Tuesday the 28th of July sees the biggest swell of the period, with 5 ft from the WNW in the morning, combined energy hitting 270 (moderate wave energy). The period is 8 seconds, so it’s a short-period wind swell, not a clean groundswell. The wind is cross-shore, so it’s not going to be clean.
If you’re itching for a paddle, the best chance comes on Wednesday the 29th of July. Wednesday morning at Les Dunes, we’ve got a 3 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and combined energy of 167 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light NNE at 6 mph, which is a cross-offshore breeze, leaving it clean. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. The crowds are possible here, so you might have some company. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
After that, it drops off again. The rest of the first week of August looks small and weak. Thursday the 30th of July morning has a little 3 ft swell with a gentle offshore wind from the NE, making it clean, but the energy is low at 98. It’s another small, ordinary day. The whole run from the 31st of July onward is just poor, small surf with messy winds.
So, the standout is Wednesday the 29th of July morning. It’s not pumping, but it’s the cleanest, most rideable wave in the whole 16-day window. For a beginner, that’s your window. The rest of the time, save your wax and wait for the next forecast.
Rusty.
