The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next 16 days at Les Dunes are a tough watch. The forecast is a long, dry spell of tiny surf. We’re looking at a solid gap here—from the start of the period on Sunday, July 19th, all the way through to the early hours of Wednesday, July 29th, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The waves are barely a ripple, with combined swell energy sitting in the weak zone (9 to 10). It’s a real bummer, but it happens.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Wednesday, July 29th. For a brief moment, conditions turn glassy. The wind goes dead calm, which is a beautiful thing for a beach break. The swell is still tiny at 2ft from the NW, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a bit better at 66, but it’s still weak. The water is a notable 71°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. It’s a novelty, but honestly, the surf is just “surfable waves but very ordinary.” On a positive note, the break is fairly consistent, and you might have it to yourself as crowds are only sometimes an issue. It’s the only window in the entire outlook where you can get a clean, small wave, so if you’re desperate, that’s your moment.
After that little tease, it’s back to the same old story. The rest of the week leading into August is dominated by cross-shores, onshores, and lumpy conditions. The swell stays in the 1.0ft to 3ft range, with combined energy mostly in the 20s and 40s. The wind is often fresh, making it a messy, choppy affair. While there are a few clean mornings with light offshore breezes, the swell is just too small to do anything with. The setup is more interesting for a kite than a surfboard on those windy afternoons.
The best of a bad bunch is Wednesday, July 29th morning. It’s not a stand-out by any stretch, but it’s the only time you’ll find the water flat and the waves rideable. Keep your expectations on the floor.
Rusty.
