The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Les Dunes over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, to be straight with you, the first week or so is a real mixed bag – mostly on the small side and with a lot of cross-onshore wind messing things up. The water temp is sitting around 70°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The real standout, and honestly the only morning I’d be getting excited about in the first week, is Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. We’ve got a glassy morning with the wind swinging to barely a whisper out of the WNW, right at 3 mph. The swell is only 3 ft from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, but combined with that glassy surface, it’s going to be as clean as a whistle. The wave energy is weak though, only 115, so it’s a small crumbler. It’s surfable, but ordinary. Crowds are possible here, so you might have a few mates out.
The rest of that first week is a write-off. Wednesday through Friday is all poor surf conditions, with the wind either onshore or cross-onshore, mostly from the W or WSW, and the swell is either too small or too messy. The energy is weak to moderate, but it’s all blown out.
Now, for the second week, things get a bit more interesting, but it’s a real case of “bigger isn’t always better.” The end of the month and into September sees a big pulse of swell, but it’s mostly too big for this spot. The weekend of the 29th-30th August is a write-off – strong winds, messy, lumpy.
The only real potential for a wave comes on Monday the 31st of August. The morning shows a solid 8 ft of swell from the W with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is a cross-shore NW breeze at 16 mph. The combined energy is strong at 747. The data says the wind and tide are favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. That’s a tough call. For a beginner spot, 8 ft is expert territory, and it’s likely to be a washing machine. Not for the faint-hearted.
Also, on Tuesday the 1st of September, we have a similar situation. The afternoon shows a 7 ft W swell with a period of 11 seconds, and a cross-shore WNW breeze. The energy is very strong at 1049. Again, the wind and tide are favorable, but the swell is just too big. If you’re a seasoned charger, it might be worth a look, but this isn’t the break for a fun, clean session.
Honestly, for the majority of this 16-day window, it’s either going to be too small and onshore, or too big and messy. The only real bright spot is that Saturday morning 22nd August for a small, clean wave. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best on offer.
