The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks for this stretch of coast. I gotta be straight with you – for the first week, it’s a struggle. We’re looking at a long dry spell of flat, weak waves. The energy is almost non-existent, with combined swell energy readings barely hitting double digits (10) through the first few days. The good news is that the wind is often offshore or light, keeping the water surface clean, but there’s just no swell to work with. The water is sitting at 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least a paddle won’t feel like winter.
The first real pulse of swell doesn’t show up until the morning of Sunday, July 28th. Les Dunes starts to see a 5ft swell from the west at a 10-second period. The combined energy jumps right up to 463 (moderate wave energy), and with a light breeze keeping it glassy, it would be a great session. The problem is, the forecast reckons it’s actually too big for this specific break. That’s a real shame, because the conditions are otherwise perfect. The afternoon of the 28th sees it jump even bigger, 7ft from the WNW, with energy going through the roof at 1551 (strong to very strong wave energy). Again, the wind is cross-shore, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. For a beginner spot like Les Dunes, anything over 5ft can be a handful, and over 8ft is expert territory. That afternoon session is definitely only for the experienced crew.
We get a bit of a reprieve on the morning of Monday, July 29th. The swell drops back to a much more manageable 4ft from the WNW, still with a long 10-second period. The wind is light and offshore from the NE, making it absolutely clean. The combined energy is still a solid 331 (moderate wave energy). This is the standout window. The forecast says wind and tide are favorable, and the swell looks good for the break. This is the one to circle on the calendar. After that, it’s back to small, weak, and choppy conditions for the rest of the run into the first week of August. The second week fades into small, onshore slop, not worth getting excited about.
So, the one true standout is the morning of Monday, July 29th at Les Dunes. If you’ve got a longboard, that 4ft WNW swell with clean offshore winds is your best bet. The afternoon of the 28th has the size, but it’s only for the experts.
Rusty.
