The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The first couple of days are a write-off – Monday the 17th is a total mess with a fierce 25 mph wind from the WSW and 13ft of choppy, poor surf. You’re better off staying home. Tuesday the 18th improves a little with a lighter 6 mph NW wind in the morning, but it’s still cross-on and the swell is lumpy. The real action starts to build from Wednesday morning.
Wednesday the 19th is where it gets interesting. Ledge Point wakes up with a 10ft swell from the WSW, a long 15-second period, and – get this – glassy conditions with a 3 mph ENE breeze. That’s about as clean as it gets around here. The water temp is 65°, which is about average for this time of year. The wave energy is strong (3515), and the offshore wind keeps things tidy. This is a standout for experienced surfers – not one for the groms, as that 10ft swell is solid. Give it a crack.
Thursday the 20th morning is another beauty. Clean cross-off wind from the SE at 3 mph, with 12ft swell from the WSW and a 16-second period. The energy is pumping (5953). This is top-shelf for expert surfers. The afternoon gets a bit cross and choppy, so get in early.
Friday the 21st morning holds clean offshore conditions from the E at 9 mph, with a 10ft WSW swell. Still solid, still clean. Friday afternoon and Saturday see the wind pick up and the quality drop off, with 16 mph cross and cross-off winds making things messy.
There’s a bit of a lull from Sunday the 23rd through Monday the 24th – wind goes onshore and the surf gets pretty average. Tuesday the 25th brings back a 10ft swell, but it’s cross-on and only marginal.
The next proper standout hits on Wednesday the 26th morning. Clean cross-off wind from the SE at 9 mph, 10ft swell from the WSW with a 16-second period, and strong wave energy (3936). This is another excellent session for the experienced crew.
Friday the 28th afternoon is worth a mention – gentle offshore wind from the E at 9 mph, with an 8ft swell and a 15-second period. Clean and lined up.
After that, the last few days of August and into September get wild. Sunday the 30th sees 10ft swell but with strong onshore winds and chop – no good. Tuesday the 1st of September is a beast – 15ft swell from the WSW, but with 16-19 mph onshore wind and way too big for most. That’s expert-only territory and messy with it.
Overall, the best windows are Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th mornings, and again on Wednesday the 26th and Friday the 28th afternoon. Ledge Point is a reef setup, and that long-period WSW swell likes to hold its shape here. Crowds can pop up sometimes, so if you can sneak in midweek, you’ll have a better chance.
Stay safe, keep an eye on the tide, and I’ll see you in the water.
