Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the 16-day crystal ball for Watermans. We're kicking off with a bit of a quiet start, but when it fires, it's gonna be a ripper for those who can handle it. The first real swell we see arrives around Monday the 6th, and from there, it’s a full-on session of solid, clean swell for the experienced crew, with a few choppy days thrown in to keep you honest.
So, Sunday the 5th is a write-off – light rain, choppy cross-on wind, and the water is sitting at 65°F, which is a bit colder than normal for the time of year, so you'll want a thicker suit. Don't even bother paddling out today.
Then Monday the 6th, look out. We’ve got a big groundswell moving in. Monday morning at Watermans is clean with light cross-offshore winds, and the swell is a solid 8ft from the WSW at 16 seconds. That’s deep, powerful energy. This is proper, experienced surfer territory – over 8ft in the afternoon, so definitely not for beginners. The wind stays light and cross-off through Monday afternoon, making for clean faces.
Tuesday the 7th is the standout peak of this first pulse. Tuesday morning is absolutely glassy with offshore ESE wind at 6 mph and a clean 8ft swell from the WSW at 16 seconds. This is the best of the bunch early on – a pumping, clean, powerful reef break. The energy is massive. It’s a morning for the locals who know the peak. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-shore wind, so make the most of the morning.
After Tuesday, conditions get a little mixed. Wednesday and Thursday (8th & 9th) still have plenty of size (5ft to 8ft), but the winds turn cross-onshore and the surface gets bumpy. Not the best quality, but still plenty of swell energy running. If you’re a die-hard, you could still get a few, but it won’t be pretty.
Friday the 10th brings a nice drop in size to 5ft, with silky clean conditions and a light offshore breeze in the morning. That’s a much more user-friendly size, but the swell period drops to 13 seconds, so it’s not as grunty.
After a blustery Saturday the 11th with big messy swell, we get a second pulse that’s even cleaner. Sunday the 12th is another absolute cracker. Sunday morning and afternoon at Watermans are clean and glassy, with light offshore and cross-off winds. The swell holds at 8ft from the SW with a long 16 to 17-second period. That’s groundswell perfection for a point or reef setup. The energy is huge. This is your second big highlight: an all-day clean session for advanced surfers.
Into the second week, things look promising but less certain. Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th keep the clean, offshore winds and moderate to solid swell (5ft to 7ft). A bit smaller, but still good for a paddle. Wednesday the 15th gets a little wind-affected again.
We hit a rough patch from Thursday the 16th through Friday the 17th as a strong onshore wind (25 to 28 mph) and big messy swell (up to 10ft) tear the place apart. That’s kite-surfing conditions, not paddle surfing.
The window closes out nicely, though. Saturday the 18th morning has glassy conditions with ESE wind at just 3 mph and a clean 7ft swell. That’s a fantastic session for those who’ve been waiting. Sunday the 19th drops to 5ft with offshore winds, and Monday the 20th brings a nice clean 6ft SW groundswell with a long 17-second period. A solid finish.
Best on offer? The true standouts are Tuesday morning, July 7th, and Sunday, July 12th. Tuesday the 7th is the bigger, more powerful, cleaner option early on. Sunday the 12th has a touch less size but is glassy all day and has that extra-long period making the waves reel. Both are expert territory, so don't paddle out if you’re not confident.
Rusty.
