The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell you about the surf coming up for Watermans. Right now, the ocean is pretty messy. It's a mix of clean and lumpy with a small, weak 5ft swell from the WSW, but the south wind making it cross and bumpy. It’s not really doing it for me today. You’d be better off waiting.
Monday the 24th of August is where the fun starts. The swell is building to a solid 7ft from the WSW, and the period is a nice long 14 seconds – that's proper groundswell. The wind goes glassy in the morning. Absolutely clean, rippable conditions. The energy in the water is strong (1933). This is a great window for experienced surfers who know the reef; the size will be pushing it for beginners. The water is about average for this time of year.
Tuesday the 25th sees the wind turning onshore from the NNW, 20 km/h. The surf chops up, and the quality drops off hard. Wednesday the 26th is a wildcard. The swell jumps to a massive 13ft from the WSW with a very long period of 19 seconds – the combined energy is over 10,000, which is huge. The morning is messy with a cross-shore wind, but the afternoon looks incredible. Glassy conditions, zero wind, and that massive groundswell stacked up. That’s expert-only territory – huge, powerful lines. Not a spot for the faint of heart.
Thursday the 27th backs off a bit to a 10ft swell from the WSW, with the wind blowing cross-offshore from the SSE. The conditions will be clean, but the wind is fresh at 30 km/h, creating a bumpy texture on the face. The energy is still very strong (4670).
The following days drop in size but stay clean. Saturday the 30th of August brings a nice 8ft WSW swell with a 17-second period and light cross-offshore wind. The surf looks excellent, clean, and well-shaped, with moderate energy (3473).
Looking further out, Thursday the 3rd of September sees an offshore wind from the ENE with a 7ft WSW swell. Clean, empty-feeling lines. And then the forecast goes a bit crazy for Sunday the 6th of September. There’s a massive 21ft groundswell predicted from the WSW, energy reading over 22,000, with completely glassy conditions. That’s absolutely enormous and far too big for a paddle session at this reef break. That setup looks way more interesting for a downwinder or a tow session than a standard surf. That’s deep into the forecast, so things can change, but if it holds, it’s a spectacle.
So, the standout for me is Monday 24th August morning for the clean, powerful groundswell. And keep an eye on Wednesday 26th afternoon for a real expert session. Otherwise, there are plenty of smaller, clean windows in between.
