The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Watermans. The swell window is open, and we’ve got a solid run of groundswell on the way, but it’s not all clean. This is a reef break, so we’re looking at a setup that can handle the long-period energy we’re seeing.
The first real action kicks off Tuesday afternoon, August 18th. We’ve got a big 12ft swell from the WSW with a 16-second period, packing a massive 6651 (moderate to strong wave energy). The wind is cross-on from the WNW at 9 mph, so it’s a bit choppy and not the cleanest. Water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good wetsuit.
The standout window is Thursday morning, August 20th. We’ve got a solid 10ft swell from the WSW, still with that long 16-second period, and the wind is glassy from the SE. The energy is strong at 4242, and this is the kind of clean, lined-up groundswell that Watermans can turn into a proper wave. Get on it.
After that, Friday morning, August 21st, offers a good option too. The swell drops slightly to 8ft from the WSW, 15-second period, but the wind is offshore from the E at 6 mph. The energy is still moderate at 2513, and the easterly breeze will keep it clean. A solid morning session.
Saturday morning, August 22nd, is worth a mention. The swell is 7ft from the WSW, with a very long 17-second period, and a light cross-off breeze from the NNE. Clean conditions (2492 energy), but that long period can make things a bit straight at a reef, so watch for the sets.
We hit a rough patch from Tuesday, August 25th, through Wednesday, August 26th. Strong onshore winds and rain make for poor conditions, with the swell size ramping up to 10ft. It’s a mess, better to sit this out.
Things clean up again on Thursday morning, August 27th, with a 7ft swell from the WSW and a light cross-off breeze from the NE. Clean conditions (1941 energy), a good return to form.
The second week settles down. Friday, August 28th, has a smaller 4ft swell from the SW with offshore winds from the E. Clean with moderate energy (594 to 735). Not huge, but fun.
Monday morning, August 31st, offers another clean window with a 6ft swell from the WSW and a light cross-off breeze from the NE. Clean and consistent.
The tail end of the outlook, September 1st and 2nd, sees a bump in swell back to 8ft from the WSW with a 17-second period, but the wind is mostly cross-shore or cross-on, and the energy is high (3995 to 4074). It’s more of a challenge than a clean session.
Overall, Thursday the 20th is the clear winner. Glassy, 10ft groundswell, and the reef will handle the long period beautifully. Don’t sleep on Friday morning the 21st or Thursday morning the 27th either.
Stay sharp, keep your eyes on the horizon.
