Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Watermans over the next couple of weeks.
First off, the water’s sitting at about 65°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year. The opening few days are a mixed bag. Wednesday morning the 8th kicks off with a 5ft WSW swell, but it’s a cross-shore breeze and the energy is massive at 2107, though the rating is just so-so. It’s not really one to get excited about. Wednesday afternoon sees a jump to 8ft with a bit more energy (3263) and clean onshore wind, but still nothing special.
Thursday the 9th morning is your first proper standout. That 8ft WSW swell has a long 15-second period, the wind is a clean cross-off, and the wave energy is 2322. This is a big, clean, powerful reef-break that’s gonna be dealing out some proper groundswell. This is the one for experienced surfers only – that size and period will be a handful. Afternoon on Thursday gets a bit onshore and drops off.
Friday the 10th is still clean in the morning with a 5ft WSW swell, but a bit less power at 781. Still a decent little session. From here, we’ve got a long gap of nothing too special until Monday the 13th. There’s some surf on the weekend but it’s either cross-shore or just not hitting the mark.
Now, Monday the 13th morning is the next real standout. A solid 7ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period, energy at 2667, and a slight offshore breeze from the ESE. This is clean, powerful, and will be lining up beautifully on the reef. This is a big wave spot – experts only again. Tuesday the 14th is also excellent: a clean 7ft WSW swell, offshore wind from ENE in the morning and E in the afternoon, and energy at 1655. Two days of pure, groomed groundswell.
After that, things start to get gnarly. By the weekend of the 18th and 19th, we’re looking at heavy weather – strong winds, rain, and a massive 16ft swell on Sunday (19th) with energy over 9000. That’s a total write-off for paddle surfing; the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than anything else.
Then, out of nowhere, Monday the 20th of July is the absolute peak of the run. We’ve got a 16ft WSW swell with a 15-second period, energy at 10372, and a slight cross-off wind in the morning, going glassy in the afternoon. This is exceptional – huge, clean, and only for the best of the best. Tuesday the 21st carries that energy with a 13ft and then 12ft swell, clean and cross-off, but still massive.
From Wednesday the 22nd, the wind turns onshore and the quality drops hard. The last few days of the run are all blown out or messy.
So, if you’re an expert, the absolute standout is Monday the 20th of July – that 16ft WSW swell, glassy in the afternoon, is the one to circle. For the near term, Thursday the 9th morning is your best clean, powerful session for the experienced.
There’s a big gap after Friday the 10th until Monday the 13th, so don’t expect much on the weekend. After the 22nd, it’s pretty much a write-off for quality.
Rusty.
