The Lowdown

G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's comin' our way over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, the surf is pretty limp. We're talkin' tiny, knee-high dribblers for the first week or so. The only spot that's really doing anything is Lahaina Harbor Break Wall. Now, this place is a beginner-friendly reef break, and it's very consistent, which is a bonus. For Wednesday morning, August 5th, it's a measly 0.4m from the SSW with an 11-second period. That's about 1 ft. The water temp is a mild 27° which is about average for this time of year. The wind is light offshore from the NE, so it's clean, but there's barely enough energy to push a leaf. The combined swell energy is just a weak 105. It's surfable, but let's be honest, it's pretty ordinary.

This same small, clean pattern just repeats itself for days. Thursday and Friday, we've got 0.4m (1 ft), offshore breezes, and clean conditions, but the combined energy is often below 100, like a weak 96 or 71. It's just not doing much.

Now, there's a little pulse that shows up late in the first week and into the second. The swell picks up slightly. By Monday, August 10th, we see 0.5m-0.7m (2 ft to 2 ft) from the SSW, and the energy starts to build into the moderate range, hitting 251 in the afternoon. Still clean with a light offshore breeze. It's not a standout, but it's something.

The real pick of the bunch, the only time this place really gets any sort of punch, is around Wednesday, August 12th and Thursday, August 13th. The swell bumps up to 0.8m-1.1m (3 ft to 4 ft) from the S, with a very long 18-second period on the 12th. This is proper groundswell energy. The combined energy jumps into the strong range, with readings of 594 and 611 on Wednesday. The winds are offshore or cross-offshore, keeping the lineup tidy. For a beginner spot, this is about as good as it gets. Thursday the 13th morning holds at 0.9m (3 ft) with a 16-second period and a 527 energy reading, but by the afternoon it gets a touch lumpy with cross-off winds on a 1.1m (4 ft) swell. Even so, these two days are the clear standouts.

After that, it fades again. Friday the 14th sees a 1.0m (3 ft) swell with moderate offshore winds, but the energy drops back to 471. By the weekend and into the third week, we're back to 0.4m-0.7m (1 ft to 2 ft) with some moderate offshore breezes. The energy just isn't there to get excited about.

So, the bottom line: this is a flat spell for a beginner-friendly wave. If you're looking for the cleanest, biggest push, your best bet is Wednesday, August 12th and Thursday, August 13th at Lahaina Harbor Break Wall. Just be ready for crowds, especially if it shows any sign of life. It’s a consistent spot so it won’t stay this flat forever, but for now, patience is the play.

Rusty.
