The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Capbreton - La Piste over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you: the first week and a half is a total write-off. We’re looking at a solid 13 days of tiny, weak, or messy conditions before anything even starts to get interesting. Don’t bother checking the cam until later.
The morning of Thursday the 23rd brings the first little bump of energy, with a 4ft swell from the WNW and a period of 8 seconds (combined energy 170). But the wind is onshore, and the whole day is labelled as poor surf conditions. Not worth your time. The same goes for Friday the 24th, with 3ft to 3ft from the WNW and stronger onshore wind.
You have to wait all the way until the morning of Monday the 27th of July for the real standout. This is the one to circle on the calendar. We get a solid 6ft groundswell rolling in from the WNW, with a period of 11 seconds (combined energy 681 – that’s some serious juice). The wind is howling out of the north at 0 mph – that’s dead calm, glassy perfection. The report says “expect very good surf conditions”. This is a proper, clean, powerful swell. The water temp is a much warmer than normal 76°, so you’ll be comfy in a spring suit. Just keep in mind that with the swell over 5ft, this is getting into the territory for intermediates and above, not a beginner’s day. The morning is the window; the afternoon turns messy with a cross-onshore breeze.
The following morning, Tuesday the 28th, still has some size at 5ft from the NW, but the wind is onshore, and the conditions are only marginal. A bit of a letdown after the day before.
Then, the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July offers another potential session. We’ve got 6ft from the WNW, period of 9 seconds (combined energy 498), and the wind is light from the east – glassy and clean. The report says “expect good surf conditions”. Again, this is a bigger swell, so it’s for the more experienced crew. The afternoon will get chopped up by the north-northwest wind.
So, the plan is simple: wait it out. The only two real windows in this whole 16-day forecast are the mornings of Monday the 27th and Wednesday the 29th. Don’t get caught out on the afternoon sessions. The long wait is over, but it’s quality over quantity.
Rusty.
