The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are a mixed bag for Capbreton - La Piste, but there are a couple of windows that will get the heart rate up. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing really happening to start, so don’t get too excited about the next few days.
For the first few days, from Wednesday through Friday, it’s going to be small and messy. There’s a bit of swell on Thursday afternoon, with waves around 4ft, but the wind’s all over the place and the conditions are going to be poor. It’s not worth getting wet for. The combined energy is pretty weak at 375, so there’s just not enough there.
Saturday morning, the 22nd, sees a little improvement. The swell drops, but the wind goes offshore and it looks clean, with waves around 4ft. It’s only surfable, nothing special, honestly. You’ll get a few grovelly ones. Not a day to write home about.
Then we hit a proper dead patch. From Sunday the 23rd through the 25th, the swell is tiny and mostly weak and inconsistent. There’s a little window Monday afternoon with glassy conditions but the period is a super short 4 seconds, so it’s going to be a total mushburger. Not worth the paddle. The combined energy is down in the 40s and 50s, which is just about as weak as it gets.
We get a bit of a pulse late on Tuesday the 25th, with waves around 5ft, but the wind is onshore and it’s going to be choppy. It’s a no-go. The middle of the week after that is more of the same – onshore winds, poor quality, nothing doing. The 27th brings a bigger, but wind-blown, 8ft swell. That’s just going to be a messy close-out, and not much fun for anyone.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. Friday morning, the 28th of August, is the first real standout. We’ve got a 6ft NW groundswell, with a 10 second period, and the wind is going to be a gentle offshore from the ESE. That’s a proper clean morning. The water’s going to be glassy, and La Piste (Capbreton) should have some nice, hollow peaks. The combined energy is at a strong 706, and it’s directed right at the break, which loves a west swell. This is your best bet in the first week. It’s not huge, but it’s going to be clean and fun.
After that little gem, we drop back to small, average conditions for a while. The weekend and the start of the new week are pretty ordinary, with small 3ft waves and not much push. It’s a waiting game.
The next major event is on Monday the 31st of August. This is a big one. The prediction is for a huge 12ft of WNW swell with a 10 second period and massive energy readings over 2260. The problem is, this is way too big for the sandbar here. It’s going to be a washing machine. If you’re a top-tier expert, you might find something, but it’s going to be a heaving, dangerous closeout. I’d be watching from the beach with a coffee, honestly.
The first few days of September are still big, with 7ft+ swell, but the winds are onshore, so it’s not going to be clean. It’s a lot of water moving for not a lot of quality surf.
Then it’s the second standout. Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September. The swell has dropped to a very manageable 7ft, still from the NW with a 9-second period. But the wind is forecast to be glassy, from the SE, and that’s going to make La Piste (Capbreton) an absolute dream. It’s still a powerful swell, so it’s for experienced surfers, but this is the one to circle. This looks like the best combination of size and clean conditions in the whole stretch. The energy is a solid 695. It’s a bit far out, but this is the one that has me frothing.
So, to be honest, save your energy for that Friday the 28th morning, and keep an eye on the 2nd of September. The rest is mostly a write-off.
Rusty.
