The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be honest from the get-go, it's a tough stretch for La Caravelle. This reef break is inconsistent at the best of times, and the next 16 days are looking pretty grim. There's nothing that stands out as a good session, so we're in a waiting game.
The pattern is basically the same story from Thursday, August 6th, right through to Friday, August 21st. We've got a persistent easterly wind, from the ESE or E, blowing at 12 to 22 mph. That keeps it cross-on or cross-shore, which is rubbish for this spot. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing special there.
The first few days, from the 6th into the 9th, we have tiny swell around 2 ft to 4 ft, coming from the NE or ENE. The energy is weak, with readings sitting between 111 and 166 (moderate energy at best). The period is short, between 6 and 8 seconds, which means weak, gutless waves. The wind is a moderate breeze making it choppy. It's all poor surf conditions.
As we move into the second week, around the 13th and 14th of August, the swell picks up. We're looking at 7 ft to 8 ft from the east, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy jumps into the strong range, hitting 893 on the 14th. But here's the catch – the wind is still a fresh cross-onshore, blowing at 19 to 22 mph. The description says "fresh cross-onshore and lumpy". That's not surfable for a paddle surfer; it's just a messy, blown-out 8 ft lump. That setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The last week, from the 15th to the 21st, the swell stays up, between 5 ft and 8 ft, but the wind never lets up. It's a constant cross or cross-on shore with moderate to fresh breeze. The energy remains strong, but the quality is zero. The waves are going to be choppy and lumpy through the entire period.
There is a 16-day gap with no good surf on offer. The reef is exposed, and it needs a clean offshore wind from the NNW to work, but we're getting the opposite. It tends not to stay poor forever, but this run is a stinker. Keep the board in the car, but maybe don't even bother getting it wet.
