Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are looking pretty flat. There’s no real swell on the cards to get excited about, and the forecast is a long, quiet stretch. For a spot like Port Louis, the lack of recommendations is a bit of a bummer, but it happens. The wind is mostly offshore, which is nice, but without any size to back it up, it’s just a lot of clean, flat water.
We kick off on Sunday, 12 July, with a tiny 0.7 ft of swell from the north, with a period of 12 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, but the energy is weak (14). The wind is a moderate offshore breeze from the east, so the surface would be clean, but there’s just not enough juice to push a wave. The combined energy sits at 14, which is weak. This poor surf pattern holds through the next few days. Monday morning, 13 July, sees a fresh offshore breeze at 19 mph, still with that 0.7 ft from the NNE. The period drops to 10 seconds, and the energy is 15. Still nothing to ride.
Tuesday, 14 July, is much the same – 0.7 ft, offshore breeze, energy dropping to 11 by the afternoon. Wednesday, 15 July, the swell drops even further to 0.3 ft, and the energy falls to 8 and then 4. By Thursday, 16 July, we’re down to 0.3 ft and a period of 8–9 seconds, with energy at just 2–4. There’s a risk of thunderstorms in the morning, but the wind is cross-offshore, so it’s still clean.
From Friday, 17 July, through to Sunday, 19 July, we see a tiny bump – 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft at best, but the period drops to 7 seconds on the Saturday, which is short-period, weak windswell. The energy peaks at 10. This is tiny, weak surf. The wind remains offshore, but it’s a “fresh breeze” at 19 mph on Sunday, 19 July, afternoon, which is a bit strong for such a small wave.
The following week is even more bleak. Monday, 20 July, and Tuesday, 21 July, have zero swell and zero energy. Wednesday, 22 July, brings back 0.7 ft with a 9-second period, energy at 11–14. Thursday, 23 July, is the “best” of the bunch, if you can call it that – 1 ft from the NE, with a 7-second period and energy of 22. That’s still tiny, short-period, and weak. The wind is a fresh offshore at 19 mph, which is too much for a wave that size. Friday, 24 July, goes flat again. The final days, 25 July to 27 July, see only 0.3 ft or nothing at all.
So, what’s the standout? There isn’t one. If you had to paddle out, the best conditions would be Thursday, 23 July, with 1 ft from the NE. The wind is offshore, but the wave is tiny and the period is a short 7 seconds. It’s not a real surf. For a beginner, it’s safe, but it’s not a wave you’ll actually ride. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
For a wave that’s only 1 ft, and with a fresh offshore breeze making it bumpy, this setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The wind is clean and consistent, but the swell is just not there.
This is a long dry spell. It’s rare to see a full 16 days with no real surf. But that’s the hand we’re dealt. Stay tuned, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
