The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got to be straight with you – the outlook for the next couple of weeks is a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch of tiny surf and poor conditions, so don't be expecting any hero sessions.
Let's start with the only break on the radar, Port Louis. It's a beginner-friendly spot that's inconsistent at the best of times, and it's fairly exposed to the swell. The water temperature is sitting around 85°F, which is about average for the time of year.
We kick off the forecast period on Thursday, the 20th of August, with a tiny 1 ft swell from the north, with a weak period of 8 seconds. The wind is offshore from the east, but the energy is just not there, with a combined energy of only 10. It's a poor surf call. This flat spell continues day after day. The swell barely nudges above 1 ft for the rest of August and into early September, with the combined energy mostly staying in the weak double digits.
There is a slight tease around Thursday, the 27th of August, when the swell climbs to 2 ft from the northeast, with a moderate period of 13 seconds. The combined energy for that afternoon hits 104, which is the only time we see a three-digit figure. The wind is offshore. But with a 2 ft wave, it's still just a knee-high dribbler at best.
We see a few more glimpses of hope in early September, with the swell hanging around 1 ft to 1 ft from the NNE, with periods from 10 to 12 seconds. The winds stay offshore, keeping the surface clean, but the size is just not there. The forecast consistently rates it as poor surf conditions right through to Friday, the 4th of September.
The standout for the whole period, if you can even call it that, is the afternoon of Thursday, the 27th of August. The swell is 2 ft from the northeast, the period is a moderate 13 seconds, and the combined energy reaches 104. It's the biggest we'll see, but it's still tiny. The offshore wind will keep it clean, but you're going to need a longboard or a foiler to get any kind of ride.
So, here's the deal: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The surf is consistently tiny, and even though the winds are often offshore, you can't make a wave out of nothing. The break is inconsistent, so a blank run like this, while frustrating, isn't totally unheard of for the area. Keep your eye on the forecasts, but for now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
