The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. Straight up, this is a tough stretch for La Station. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for decent surf. I’ve got nothing good to recommend—not a single standout session worth paddling out for. The wind is relentless from the east, rarely giving us a clean face, and the swell is mostly short-period, weak, and poorly directed for this reef.

Water temp is sitting at 84°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a spring suit.

The first week, from Thursday the 6th through to Wednesday the 12th, is all cross-onshore or cross-shore breeze, with swell heights struggling between 3 ft and 5 ft. The period is short—6 to 7 seconds—so the waves are weak and bumpy. Combined energy sits between 120 and 265, which is weak to moderate, but the wind messes up any chance of a clean wave. The best you can say is that the water is warm.

From Thursday the 13th into the second week, the swell actually picks up—heights climb to 8 ft by the 14th and stay there through the 16th, with combined energy hitting strong numbers like 1001 and 1146. But don’t get excited. The wind is still howling from the east at 19–22 mph, blowing cross or cross-onshore, and the period stays short at 8–9 seconds. It’s lumpy, messy, and frankly more suited to kite surfers than paddle surfers. The reef is exposed, but with this much onshore wind, it’s just a washing machine.

Things ease off a little from the 17th onward, but the damage is done. Swell drops back to 4 ft–8 ft, and while the wind lightens slightly, it’s still cross-shore and choppy. Only one session—Monday afternoon the 17th—even gets a marginal score of 1 out of 10, and that’s just questionable tide conditions, not a green light. The rest are all zeros.

Honestly, this is a blank run. The forecast shows no real improvement in the wind direction, and the swell never gets that long-period groundswell that could make La Station shine. It’s a reef that needs a clean NE swell, and we’re not getting it. For a spot that’s normally consistent, this is a dry spell. Could change, but right now, save your energy.

Rusty.
