The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for La Station. It’s a reef break that needs a NE swell, and we’re looking at a pretty tough stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for a proper paddle session, so lower your expectations. There’s a solid run of days with no real recommendation at all.

Things start on Thursday, 6 August. We’ve got small swell pushing in at 3 ft from the NE, with a short period of 8 seconds and weak energy (150). The wind is howling out of the east at 15 mph, making it a choppy cross-shore mess. The water is 84°, which is about average for this time of year. Not a wave you’d paddle for.

Friday and Saturday, 7 and 8 August, are more of the same – the swell bumps up to 5 ft (ENE) but the period drops to a miserable 6 seconds, and the wind stays fresh and cross-onshore. It’s lumpy and ugly. The energy picks up a bit (198-243), but it’s all windslop.

Sunday 9 August through to Tuesday 12 August, the wind is still a problem. Cross-shore and cross-onshore, 12-18 mph. The swell sits around 4 ft to 5 ft, mostly from the E, with periods of 6-7 seconds. The energy is moderate (139-289), but the conditions are just poor. Not one for the quiver.

Now, from Thursday 13 August, things get bigger – but not better. The swell hits 7 ft and then 8 ft by Friday 14 August, with the period stretching to 8-9 seconds. The combined energy jumps up into strong territory (456-1074). That’s a lot of water moving. But the wind is still a fresh onshore or cross-shore mess, and it’s all lumpy. At 8 ft, this is expert-only territory, and with the wind, it’s a washing machine. Looks more like a kite-surfing setup than a day for a surfboard.

The only flicker of hope comes on Saturday 15 August morning, where the system flags it as “marginal” – the swell is 8 ft, period 9 seconds, and the wind is cross-shore. The energy is massive (1040). It’s a powerful E groundswell, but this is a reef break, so with that long period and size, it could be a bit too straight and heavy. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have it to yourself, but you’ll be fighting a lumpy, cross-shore wind. Not a standout.

The final week, from 17 August to 21 August, the swell slowly drops back from 8 ft to 3 ft. The wind stays onshore or cross-shore most of the time. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday 18 August afternoon where it’s marked “marginal” again – 7 ft, period 8 seconds, cross-shore wind. That’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s still not a good day.

Honestly, if you’re looking for a clean wave at La Station in this 16-day outlook, you’re out of luck. The wind is just relentless. The bigger swell days are too messy, and the smaller days are sloppy. No real standouts to get excited about.

Rusty.
