The Lowdown

Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for this stretch of coast.

Well, I gotta be straight with you – this forecast window is a bit of a bummer for paddle surfing. From Thursday the 20th of August right through to the 4th of September, the whole run is rated as poor surf conditions, so there are no standout days. The waves are there, but the wind is just not playing ball.

Let’s start with the spot: Le Moule. It’s a beach and reef setup, consistent, and exposed to the swell. The water temp is sitting at 85°F, which is about normal for this time of year with just a 1°F anomaly. Nothing unusual there.

The pattern is pretty monotonous. For the first week, from the 20th through to the 27th of August, we see easterly winds blowing at 12-16 mph, mostly cross or cross-on. That’s putting a chop on the face. Swell heights hang around the 4 ft to 6 ft mark, coming from the east or east-northeast with short periods of 6 to 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, ranging from about 215 to 431. The morning of the 21st sees a bit of a jump to 6 ft and 406 energy, but the cross-shore wind kills any chance of clean waves.

Then, from the 25th of August into the 29th, the swell builds. The morning of the 25th shows 7 ft from the east with an 8-second period, and energy jumps to 519. The 29th sees the biggest swell of the run – Saturday morning has 8 ft east swell, 8 seconds, and a combined energy of 866. By Saturday afternoon, it’s up to 10 ft with a massive 1152 energy. That is proper size. But the wind is still cross or cross-on at 16-19 mph, which means it’s going to be messy and lumpy. At this size, 8 ft and over, it’s expert-only territory, but with that wind, it’s more likely to be a washout. Honestly, this setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially with the strong cross-shore winds.

By the 30th of August, the swell starts to drop, going from 8 ft on the Sunday morning down to 3 ft by the 1st of September. The period does stretch to 9 seconds for a couple of days, which is better, but the wind stays stubbornly cross or cross-on. The last few days, from the 1st to the 4th of September, the swell is small – 2 ft to 4 ft – with gentle to moderate breezes. Still, the wind direction keeps it from cleaning up.

So, the bottom line: there’s a long gap of poor conditions here. Not a single day where I can say “go get it.” It’s one of those runs where you might just have to wait for the next forecast update. The waves are there, but the wind is the enemy.

Rusty.
