The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me talk you through the next couple of weeks for our local stretch.
Truth be told, it’s a tough start. We’re looking at a solid run of days where the wind is just relentless out of the east, blowing across or onshore. The surf is on the small side, mostly around the 5ft mark, and that wind is just tearing it up, making everything lumpy and cross-chop. There isn’t a single decent wave in the first week. The water temperature is sitting at 84°, which is about what we’d expect for this time of year.
The real story here is the wait. We’re talking a full week with no real surf on offer. The conditions don’t start to look any better until around Wednesday the 26th of August. That morning the wind drops back a touch, coming more from the ESE at 12 mph, still cross-shore. The swell pushes up to 10ft with a moderate energy reading of 1447. It’s still a bit messy, and it’s borderline, but it’s the first flicker of hope.
The standout moment I can see, but it comes with a big caveat, is Tuesday the 25th of August. The swell jumps significantly. We’ve got an 12ft wave from the east with a 11-second period in the afternoon. The combined energy is huge at 2633. That is proper, solid swell. Here’s the problem: the wind is still a moderate 16 mph cross-onshore. The forecast calls it “poor surf conditions.” At that size, with that wind, that’s big, lumpy, and messy. Only for the experts, and even then, it’s not going to be a pretty one. Le Moule is a beach and reef setup, but with that much wind and size, honestly, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
After that, things mellow out. By Sunday the 30th of August we get some cleaner conditions. The wind drops to a gentle 9 mph from the ESE, still cross-shore, which is a big positive. The swell comes in from the ENE at 6ft with a long 11-second period. This is the most promising window. The energy is still good at 899 (moderate), and with glassy conditions like that, Le Moule could clean up nicely. The long period means better-shaped waves, though they might break a bit straight at this beach-and-reef spot.
So, to sum it up: sit on your hands for the first week. The genuine opportunity doesn’t appear until the very end of the month, around the 30th of August. That’s your best bet. It’s not a classic run, but it’s something to aim for.
Rusty.
