The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Alright, my friends, I’ve got to be straight with you – this next stretch is looking grim for Le Moule. We’re staring down a long, dry spell that stretches all the way from Thursday the 20th of August well into the first week of September. The swell is there, but it’s a mess. The wind is coming at us from the east and east-southeast, which for Le Moule is a cross-shore or cross-onshore breeze, and it’s blowing fresh at 18 to 19 mph consistently. That’s kicking up a lumpy, cross-chop surface that’s just not surfable. The water’s sitting at 85°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
The combined energy of all swells here is weak to moderate at best, ranging from 221 to 394, and it’s all short-period, 7 to 8 seconds of wind swell. The swell heights hover around 4ft to 6ft, but it doesn’t matter how big it is when the wind is tearing it to shreds. Honestly, for the first week, there’s just nothing to recommend. The forecast keeps saying “poor surf conditions,” and I’m not going to sugarcoat it.
Now, there is a glimmer of hope, but it’s a long way off. On Saturday the 29th of August, we start to see a real pulse. The morning swell jumps to 8ft from the east, with a period stretching to 9 seconds, and the combined energy hits 1024. That’s a solid, moderate-to-strong pulse of energy. The wind is a cross-shore, and the report says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” This is the only moment in the whole 16-day window that even gets a score of 1 out of 10, which tells you everything. That Saturday morning could be the one to watch, but it’s a question of the tide and the wind holding. That size is getting into expert territory, especially for a beach-and-reef setup like Le Moule. The swell direction is east, and the optimum for this spot is northeast, so it’s a little off-angle, but it’s the only real event on the horizon. The afternoon of the 29th drops to 8ft and the wind goes cross-onshore, so that morning window is the key.
After that, it’s back to the same old story. Sunday the 30th has a bit of leftover energy but the wind is back on it. Into the first week of September, the energy drops right off again, with swells of 3ft to 5ft and weak energy. The wind stays fresh and cross-shore, keeping the surface lumpy.
So, what’s the call? If you’re a kiter, this whole stretch is going to be far more interesting than for paddle surfing. The consistent cross-shore wind and chest-high swell will be a blast for you. For surfers, it’s a waiting game. Circle Saturday the 29th of August in your calendar. That morning session at Le Moule has the potential to be the standout, but it’s a long way out and the confidence is low. It’s the only real chance we’ve got.
This is Rusty, signing off.
