The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's shaking for the next couple of weeks at Le Moule.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a rough start. For the first week, the wind is just a pain – cross and cross-onshore, mostly from the east. That combined with the short-period, weak energy swell means the surface is going to be lumpy and choppy, not doing anyone any favours. We're looking at a lot of days with combined swell energy in the 200-400 range, which is just meager, disappointing stuff. The water temp is 84°, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold while you’re getting frustrated.
The good news is, it ain't all bad. The whole pattern shifts towards the end of the month. Sunday the 30th shows a flicker of life, with a long-period 15-second groundswell pushing in, but it's still a bit messy with a cross wind. The combined energy jumps to 666, a solid moderate, but it’s still just a "marginal" call.
The real standout, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Monday morning, the 31st of August. That’s the moment. We get a clean 7.2ft set from the ENE, with a 12-second period – that's proper groundswell energy. The wind goes gentle and cross-offshore, turning the whole thing on. The combined energy hits 1332, which is strong, proper wave power. This is a window for experienced surfers only – that size with that energy is no joke. The optimum direction is NE, and we're getting ENE, so it's a solid match for the spot. It's a consistent break, so it should be linking up nicely. Keep an eye out for crowds though, because this one will get busy.
After that peak, things drop off again. The first of September sees the swell fade, and we're back to shorter period, cross-shore junk for the rest of the week. There’s a little bump on the 6th and 7th of September, but the wind swings back onshore and ruins the party with 5ft to 5.5ft of lumpy, short-period chop. That sort of setup with a fresh cross-onshore wind and a beach-and-reef break looks more like a kiter's day than a surfer's, to be honest.
So, bottom line: grit your teeth through the first week, maybe have a look on Sunday the 30th if you're desperate, but the real gold is Monday the 31st. Just make sure you're ready for it.
