The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the surf outlook for Le Moule. I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough 16-day stretch. There’s really nothing good on offer for paddle surfing.

The main issue is the wind. It’s blowing from the east, and it’s onshore or cross-shore for the vast majority of the period, which is just trashing the wave faces. The swell is hanging around between 3 ft and 7 ft, mostly from the east with a short, weak period of 6 to 8 seconds, but the energy is all over the place – moderate at best with combined swell energy hitting three-digit figures, then jumping up to four digits (like 454 on Saturday morning, July 18th), but it’s all coming with wind that makes it a lumpy, choppy mess. Honestly, with this onshore breeze and poor surf quality, a setup like this at a beach and reef break might be more interesting for kite surfing than traditional surfing.

The water is sitting at 83°F, which is around normal for this time of year, so that’s not the problem. It’s just the wind and the direction. The only time it looks like it *might* clean up is right at the tail end of the forecast. On Friday, July 31st, in the afternoon, we finally see the wind shift to a cross-offshore from the southeast, with a light breeze. The wave state is described as clean, and the swell is still there at 5 ft from the east (energy around 218). It’s a marginal call, but that brief window is the closest thing to a chance. The score is only a 1 for that one, so don’t get your hopes up too high. Saturday morning, August 1st, also has clean conditions with cross-offshore wind, but again it’s a risk of thunderstorms and still marked as poor surf conditions.

Other than that one possible clean-up on the 31st of July and the 1st of August, the entire 16-day window is a blank run for quality waves. There’s a solid 11-day gap from the start of the forecast right up until that Friday where there’s nothing recommended. It’s a tough run for the area, but it won’t stay this way forever. Forecasts change. Keep your eyes peeled for that last day of July, but otherwise, don’t lose sleep over it.

Rusty.
