The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s happening here in the Le Moule area. To be straight with you, it’s a tough stretch for most of the next two weeks.
Starting Tuesday the 18th and running right through the end of August, it’s mostly “poor surf conditions” with moderate to fresh cross-shore winds, lumpy chop, and combined wave energy mostly between 250 and 470 (moderate energy). The swell is hanging around 1.3m to 1.9m from the east, but with a short period of just 7 to 8 seconds, there’s no punch or shape. It’s a messy, blown-out beach and reef setup that’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
There’s a brief spike on the 25th of August when a bigger, longer-period groundswell rolls in – 2.2m from the east with a 12-second period and combined energy hitting 1355 (strong to very strong energy). But the wind is cross-onshore and the forecast still calls it “poor surf conditions,” so it’s going to be choppy and tough. That one’s for experts only.
The best shot, and I mean the only real standout, is the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. Swell drops to 1.3m from the east-northeast, period is a short 8 seconds, but the wind goes light cross-shore from the southeast at just 10 km/h. That’s clean, with only small crossing wind ripples. Then on the Thursday afternoon, it gets even cleaner – light cross-offshore wind, 1.2m east swell, and combined energy of 207 (weak energy). The guidance says “expect good surf conditions,” and that’s your best chance. The water temperature is 29°C, which is about normal for the time of year. It’ll be small and clean, a fun little session for intermediate surfers, but don’t expect much power. Crowds are possible, so get in early.
After that, it fades back into poor, choppy conditions through the start of September. There’s a longer-period swell on the 1st of September with 11 seconds from the east-northeast, but the cross-onshore wind messes it up again.
So, the bottom line: a long, flat, and messy run for most of the next two weeks. The only real chance of a decent wave is on the afternoon of Thursday the 27th of August at Le Moule – small, clean, and light winds. That’s your window.
