The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here with a straight-up look at what’s on offer locally. We’ve got a long, dry stretch ahead, so let’s not beat around the bush. The first decent window to get wet doesn’t show up for a while.
For the first eight days, from Tuesday 18 August right through to Sunday 23 August, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is around, running 4ft to 6ft from the east, but the wind is a persistent cross-shore or cross-onshore, and with short periods of 7 to 8 seconds, it’s all chop and no shape. The combined swell energy is mostly weak to moderate, peaking at 432 (moderate) on Sunday afternoon, but the conditions are consistently labeled “poor surf.” Not worth the paddle.
There’s a bit of a gap there until we get a glimmer of hope on Monday 24 August. The morning still looks marginal, with 8ft east swell and a short 8-second period, combined energy at 1171 (strong), but it’s messy. The afternoon, however, things start to look more interesting. Swell bumps up to 10ft from the east, the period stretches out to 10 seconds, and the combined energy jumps right up to 2507 (very strong wave energy). That’s a lot of water moving. Monday afternoon is the first real standout, but at 10ft, this is expert territory only – far too big for beginners. The wind is still cross-shore so it won't be glassy, but it's the best on offer early in the week. This is the day to point the car at Le Moule. It’s a beach and reef set-up, exposed to the east, and while the swell direction is a touch east of the optimum NE, that much energy will find a way. Keep in mind, it can get busy here, so be ready to share the lineup.
Tuesday 25 August sees a storm risk and cross-onshore winds, which knocks the quality right down, so that window closes quickly. Then there’s another quiet spell until Wednesday 26 August. That afternoon, we get a clean-up with light, cross-offshore winds from the southeast, and a tidy 6ft east swell with a short 8-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 434, but the wind is “clean.” It’s a decent session for a confident intermediate, but not the highlight of the run.
The real standout, the one to circle on the calendar, is Monday 31 August. The afternoon brings a 6ft east swell, but the period stretches to 11 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is 1020 (strong), and it’s a moderate cross-shore. A longer period swell like that will wrap nicely around the reef at Le Moule and produce some well-shaped, powerful lines. The water temp is sitting around 84°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so just boardies and a rashie.
After that, the final few days into early September look to fade back into small, weak, and poorly conditioned surf. So, to wrap it up in a nutshell: Monday 24 August afternoon if you’re an expert and don’t mind a bit of cross-shore wind, but the real gem is Monday 31 August afternoon – a classic, long-period groundswell hitting a forgiving size with okay wind. Get it while it’s there. It’s a go-out-and-have-fun day.
Rusty.
