Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you from the start: this is a rough stretch. The wind is a persistent problem and the swell is coming from the wrong direction for the main break on offer, Le Moule. This is a beach and reef setup that’s exposed to the open ocean, but the swell is coming from the East, while the optimum is from the Northeast. Combine that with a constant cross or cross-onshore breeze, and the result is a whole lot of lumpy, choppy, and poor surf.
The water temp is about average for this time of year.
We do have swell energy, but it’s not working in our favour. The wave energy is moderate to strong throughout, with values like 624 and 678 (combined energy), but the 8-second period is short, so it’s weak, crumbly, and doesn’t hold up well. The wind is a fresh breeze from the East, blowing directly across or onto the break, making the surface messy.
The first real chance to paddle out is on Thursday, July 9th. The swell is 7ft from the East, with a short 8-second period. But with a 19 mph cross-shore wind, it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. Not worth it.
This pattern repeats day after day. Friday, July 10th through Sunday, July 12th, the swell hangs around 6ft to 7ft, but the wind stays onshore or cross-shore, and the conditions are described as “poor” every session. The energy is 624 on Friday morning, 678 on Saturday morning, but it’s all for nothing with that wind.
The second week looks no better. From Monday, July 14th through to the end of the outlook, we see the same story: East swell, moderate to fresh breeze, and cross or cross-onshore winds. The swell starts to drop a bit, down to 5ft by Thursday, July 16th, and even lower to 3ft on Tuesday, July 22nd, but the wind is still trash. The energy drops to 256 on the 16th and 183 on the 22nd, which is weak.
There is a brief moment on Sunday, July 20th where the swell is only 4ft to 5ft and the wind drops to 12 mph, but it’s still cross-shore, so it’ll be bumpy. Not a standout.
The last few days, July 21st to 24th, the swell picks back up to 5ft to 6ft, but the energy is still moderate (425 on the 24th) and the period is short at 7-8 seconds. The wind is still a fresh 16-19 mph cross or cross-onshore. It’s the same old story.
The Bottom Line: There are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The wind never lets up and the swell direction is off. The consistent conditions point to this being a normal blank run for the area. Honestly, with the strong cross-shore wind and the beach-reef setup, this period looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Let’s hope the forecasts change, but for now, I’d leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
