The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s cookin’ on the eastern side of the island over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it’s not looking like a classic run at Le Moule. This is a beach and reef setup that’s wide open to the northeast trade winds, and right now those trades are howlin’. We’ve got a solid stretch ahead with barely a window of clean surf, so don’t get your hopes up too high.
The overall picture is a long, drawn-out patch of lumpy, cross-shore chop. The swell is there, sure, but the wind is constantly messing it up. For the first week and a half, it’s a whole lot of “poor surf conditions” with moderate to fresh easterly breezes. The combined wave energy sits mostly in the moderate range (between 200 and 500), but it’s all short-period, wind-driven junk at 7 to 8 seconds. You’ll see chest to head-high waves (5 to 6 ft), but it’s just a bumpy, blown-out mess. Tuesday afternoon the 18th of August gets a little glimmer of hope with a light cross-offshore breeze and clean conditions, but at 5 ft and 8 seconds from the east, it’s only a marginal session. Past that, it’s right back into the choppy cross-shore muck until we hit the end of the month.
Now, the only true standout in this whole 16-day window is shaping up for Tuesday the 25th of August. Tuesday afternoon looks like a real treat. We’re talking a 7 ft east swell with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind is coming light from the southeast at only 6 mph as a cross-offshore breeze. That’s about as clean as it gets for this spot. The combined energy is a solid 675, so there’s some grunt in the water. It’s going to be a proper session with clean, lined-up waves. The water temp is sitting at a balmy 84°, which is 1° above average – so about normal for this time of year. Just keep in mind that Le Moule is known to be *sometimes* crowded, so you might have some company for that one. With the swell at 7 ft, it’s getting solid, so it’s more of an intermediate-to-advanced affair; beginners might want to sit that one out.
There’s another oddball moment on Monday the 31st of August where the period jumps up to 13-14 seconds on a small 3 ft east swell. That’s a proper groundswell pulse, but with 16 mph cross-shore winds, it’s going to be a choppy, tricky paddle out with long waits between sets. The energy is moderate (453-612), but the conditions will ruin it. Not one to chase.
So, to sum it up: the first 10 days are a write-off for clean waves. The one day you want to circle on the calendar is Tuesday the 25th of August for the afternoon session. After that, we’re back into the trade-wind chop. That’s the pick of the bunch.
Rusty.
