The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a bit of a heartbreaker for this stretch. We’ve got a long, quiet run ahead with hardly anything worth paddling out for.
Things start off real flat. The entire first week, from Monday the 17th of August right through to Sunday the 23rd, is a write-off. We see small waves, but the wind is always messin’ it up – cross-shore, cross-on, choppy, lumpy. Not a single session worth your wax. The combined wave energy is weak, barely cracking 300–400 (weak to moderate energy) and the period is a short, gutless 7–8 seconds. Water temp is sitting at a warm 84°, about normal for this time of year, so you’d be comfortable, but there’s just no swell to ride.
Now, I gotta tell you about Monday the 24th of August because it’s a real standout, but not in a good way for most of us. Le Moule (beach and reef) gets a huge pulse of swell – 15 ft from the east-northeast with a long period of 12 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a massive 9680 (strong to very strong wave energy). This is serious, heavy water. But here’s the rub – it’s blown out by a fresh 19 mph onshore wind. For a beach-and-reef setup, that’s just messy and dangerous. Only for the absolute experts, and even then, it’s gonna be a battle. The offshore wind direction that would really suit Le Moule is northeast, which is close, but the onshore wind kills the quality.
After that big pulse, things settle a bit. Tuesday the 25th of August morning and afternoon look marginally better. We’ve got 7–7 ft east swell at 9 seconds, and the wind swings to a cross-offshore from the south-southeast at 19 mph. That means clean faces. The combined energy is still moderate at 600–708. It’s not going to be epic, but if you’re keen, it’s the only real window of decent surf. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so you might have some company.
The rest of the forecast after that drops back into that same old pattern – small east swell, short period (8 seconds), and constant cross-shore wind. Marginal at best, usually poor. The best you can hope for is a few knee-high rollers if the tide lines up.
In short: Don’t get your hopes up for the first week. The only day that even has a pulse is Monday the 24th, but it’s for the brave and the insane. Tuesday the 25th is your best bet for a clean-ish wave, but it’s still not a standout. We’ll see if the forecasts change – it’s a long way out.
Rusty.
